As you know, a mic preamplifier is a very important part of any recording chain. But when it comes to selecting a preamp, many people heavily favor channel strips. A channel strip is basically a type of preamp with additional signal processing circuits; similar to an entire channel in a mixing console. If you want additional flexibility and options that will make your recordings sound even better, a channel strip is the way to go.

How many channels do you need? When it comes to the number of channels in your channel strip, the choice depends solely on your needs. If you are a beginner or amateur musician, a single rack channel strip is a great choice. For more extensive recording situations, Sweetwater carries channel strips with up to 8 channels. Multichannel channel strips are very popular with studio owners.

After deciding on your number of channels, you will also need to make a selection between solid state, tube and hybrid. Which kind of preamp do you need? The main difference among these is their circuit design. Solid state channel strips offer a lot of clarity and transparency of sound. These are the best choice for people looking to avoid distortion at high levels of gain. On the other hand, tube channel strips add a bit of warmth to your sound. If you are looking for something in between, we also carry hybrid channel strips - a combination of the other two types. These channel strips minimize distortion while adding warmth to your sound at the same time.

What about extra features? We have channel strips that include compressors, EQs, or both! Get one with a compressor to reduce the dynamic range of the input signal. An equalizer lets your creativity flow. You can change individual frequencies to get specific sound characteristics. For example, if you have an equalizer, you can alter lower frequencies to add more bass to your recording.

How many rack spaces will you need? We offer channel strips available in 1U, 2U, and 3U configurations.
