So-Cal Style with Sweeping HSS Versatility

Single-coil sparkle, humbucker power, and iconic So-Cal style: Charvel’s Pro Mod Style HSS is an ultra-high-performance 6-string that’s sure to thrill the modern Superstrat fanatic! This guitar’s slim alder body sports a trio of top-class Seymour Duncan pickups in an HSS pickup configuration, including a bridge-position TB-6 and dual SSL-6 Flat Strat single-coils in the middle/neck. It’s an exceptionally versatile HSS combo that’s equally ready to tackle soaring high-gain shred licks and traditional single-coil chime. Molded in the classic Charvel Superstrat tradition, the Pro-Mod Style 1 HSS FR E boasts a slim maple Speed Neck in a 12-16-inch compound radius for effortless playability. Finally, a Floyd Rose 1000 Series Double-locking Tremolo ties it all together with impeccable tuning stability, even when performing drop-deck dive-bombs.

Screaming Seymour Duncan Pickups

The Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR E comes equipped with a trio of Seymour Duncan pickups for a high-output, aggressive flavor packed with sweeping tonal versatility. First up, the bridge position sports a screaming TB-6 Duncan Distortion Humbucker — a model that more than lives up to its name, with a clear bell-like character that shines through even when chunking out ultra-high-gain drop-tuned riffs. Plus, the TB-6’s natural-sounding midrange, tight bass, and clear trebles deliver a fluid, vocal-like character that’s perfect for melodic work and rapid-fire soloing. Looking to dial down the gain? Dual Seymour Duncan SSL-6 Flat Strat pickups in the bridge and middle position offer traditional single-coil snap, sparkle, and bite to balance with the TB-6’s dual-coil roar.

Compound-radius Charvel Speed Neck

Every facet of the Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR E’s maple Speed Neck is primed for high-speed performance, but while it’s certainly on the leaner side, it’s by no means strictly limited to single-note solo applications. In fact, Sweetwater guitarists of all stripes have come to favor the wide “U”-shape of the Speed Neck — especially as the ebony fingerboard’s 12–16-inch compound radius offers comfortable chording down low, while simultaneously facilitating fleet-fingered technicality as it flattens out in the upper register.

Floyd Rose 1000 Series tremolo for extra sonic exploration

Unlock greater playing potential with the Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR E. It comes loaded with a real-deal Floyd Rose 1000 series locking tremolo system. When you play, use it for anything from subtle vibrato to full-on dive-bombs — it'll still be in tune and ready to go again. Whether you use it or abuse it, you'll have trouble knocking the Floyd Rose tremolo bridge out of tune.

The Pro-Mod Story

Charvel's Pro-Mod series guitars rock classic Charvel style, born in Southern California more than three decades ago. These axes are packed with the hot-rodded, high-performance features artists rely on: classic body styles, premium tonewoods, unfinished oiled necks, smooth, rolled fingerboard edges, scorching pickups, rock-solid bridges, and more. Take it from the guitar aficionados at Sweetwater: get your hands on a Pro-Mod, and you won't let go.

Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR E Electric Guitar Features:

  • Double-cut alder body offers effortless access to the upper frets
  • Graphite-reinforced maple neck in Charvel’s ultra-fast Speed Neck shape
  • Elegant ebony fingerboard for a smooth feel and refined look
  • 12–16-inch compound radius provides comfortable chording at the base of the neck with effortless playability up high
  • Floyd Rose 1000 Series tremolo unlocks screaming dive-bombs and wild vibrato with incredible tuning stability
  • Versatile Seymour Duncan HSS pickup configuration comprised of a high-output bridge-position TB-6 humbucker and dual Flat Strat SSL-6 single-coils

Reviews

Charvel So Cal Pro Mod
This guitar is an unbelievable value with premium pickups and ebony fretboard and Floyd Rose tremelo. Mine plays very nice out of the box, but like any guitar will benefit from a good set up. The tone is exactly what I was looking for. Made in Mexico always leaves some quality questions in my mind, but this one has surpassed my expectations. Fit & finish are flawless. Has a more traditional feel, which is what I wanted, yet can easily be a shredders guitar. Very pleased with this one.

Great Guitar
I wanted another floyd rose style guitar that had some versatility this is about as close as you can get in an out of the box guitar it feels like your favorite strat with a slightly wider /flatter neck, the pick ups are very good and very balanced so you can get your favorite neck position blues ,and switch to a good shred with a flick of the switch ,the humbucker is a little bright but is Easly adjustable by rolling the tone off a bit,i also recommend the PLEC PRO set up Sweetwater did an outstanding job feels amazing, i did have my guitar tech give the string height a very small tweak, just a personal preference ,and it stays in tune did 2 gigs with it and the more i played the more i liked it my only concern is the black pick guard shows scratch's very easy, just a cosmetic thing it dosnt effect the instrument.Hats Off to my sales engineer Ed Needler I have been working with him for years for all my needs Ed never misses a beat,( let me know when you get some Rics back in stock) Thank you Ed and Sweetwater!

A great versatile guitar.
I bought this guitar this month and am very happy with my purchase. The first thing I did was set it up. After about an hour of really dialing in the action and the truss rod, it plays phenomenal. The tones that this guitar is capable of producing are incredible. It is rather light which is such a plus. Stays in perfect tune as expected. The neck is VERY small towards the headstock area and that may not be every guitar player's cup of tea. You can wrap the top side of your thumb around the fretboard (that's how small the neck is). For me, I have smaller hands and it works great, but it's nice to be aware ahead of time prior to purchasing one. I don't think I would use this guitar solely as a rhythm guitar. It's perfect for lead players in my opinion (or perhaps I just got a neck that was sanded a little too tiny) but who knows! I immediately upgraded the stock humbucker to a "Seymour Duncan Full Shred Zebra" and a "Seymour Duncan Hot Rails Cr
Will Need a Good Setup
If you are an experienced player that's used to playing higher end guitars like the Ibanez Prestige and USA Jackson you be disappointed in this one. I don't have this exact guitar but I do have a brand new Pro Mod Chlorine Burst (no longer available through Sweetwater apparently. I got one of the last ones for $). This sums up the Pro Mod Series:

The good:

1. Floyd Rose 1000.
2. Looks and fit and finish.
3. Not made in China.
4. Decent pickups.
5. Decent hardware.

The Bad:

1. The setup out of the box. There were two shims under the locking nut. A .020" full length and another 0.020" for the high e and B strings. The nut was WAY WAY too high. I removed those shims and it's still a little high.
2. The tremolo plate was not horizontal and level with the body. Not terrible but still wrong. Isn't this on the 55 point inspection Sweetwater???
3. A scratch in the front finish (≈ 1"). Can live with it. If this were a higher end guitar it would have been returned.
4. Some high frets. I found about 5 high frets with my fret rocker. The frets will need to be leveled and dressed. Luckily, I have the tools and know how to do that. Keep this in mind if you don't.
5. Need higher action to account for the frets. I have mine set at ≈ 5/64" bass side and 4/64" treble side with 0.008" relief. There is still a slight buzz on the 2nd fret (the 3rd fret is a high fret).
6. Fret sprout. It's not terrible but it's there. I'll take care of this when I do the fret level/dress.

For $ (what I paid) I can overlook these issues, fix them, and have a great guitar. For $ there are better guitars for the money. One being the Ibanez RG550 Genesis. That guitar came correct. Just needed a minor setup out of the box. In my opinion it's a better guitar.
