PRS's Take on an American Classic

The PRS Silver Sky was designed by Paul Reed Smith and built to John Mayer's specifications. This vintage-inspired guitar boasts a familiar shape with an eye-catching contrasting tone in its cutaway scoop. Its neck carve, scale length, and fingerboard radius were modeled after John's early-'60s instruments; however, a modified PRS-style headstock and locking tuners propel it firmly into the twenty-first century. Park this axe in front of any tube amp, and its sweet-sounding single-coil pickups will churn out glassy, musical tones with excellent note definition. Beyond that, the Silver Sky includes a bone nut, molded metal jack plate, retooled knobs, custom fret-wire, and PRS's double-action truss rod.

Vintage-inspired neck with practical contemporary touches

The Silver Sky's bolt-on neck is patterned after John Mayer's beloved vintage instruments. Its fingerboard is loaded with 22 custom-sized frets, and it boasts a 25.5" scale length and 7.25" radius. At Sweetwater, we're intimately familiar with the unique feel of classic American electric guitars, and we can attest — PRS nailed it. Wrap your hand around this neck, and you'll agree — it just feels right. The Silver Sky features an inverted PRS-style headstock that's been modified to accommodate John's playing style and to keep a consistent length of string behind the nut, which improves intonation. You also get traditional vintage-style closed-back tuners with modern locking mechanisms.

A trio of sweet-sounding single-coil pickups

If you're a single-coil tone connoisseur, you'll love the PRS Silver Sky. Its pickups combine the best elements of early-'60s American electric guitars: a round and full tone with glassy, musical highs that never venture into icepick land. The chiming harmonics yielded by these pickups are jaw-dropping. And when you put them in front of a tube amp, you get a gorgeous growl with outstanding note definition. These pickups have a few modern tricks up their sleeve, too: they exhibit a higher signal-to-noise ratio than vintage models, and their in-between sounds are noise canceling. On top of that, their electronics have been precision valued, ensuring superior consistency from pickup to pickup.

Classic-styled tremolo with modern reliability

Much like its tuners, the Silver Sky's tremolo takes a classic design and embellishes it with modern features. For starters, it features PRS's unthreaded tremolo arm, which supplies you with a small set screw to optimize its playing position. Beyond that, Gen III knife-edge screws ensure a reliable return to pitch. Also, per John Mayer's request, the tremolo rests flush against the guitar's body in a neutral position, so that it only goes down in pitch. Keeping the bridge in contact with the body amplifies the guitar acoustically, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the Silver Sky's pickups.

Why I waited so long!!

This is by far the best Guitar on my collection, I had to hang my Les Paul, Gretsch, dusy, and all the other genders I have. This PRS has such a sweet tone without the harsh of a regular Fender Stratocaster. I highly recommend this instrument to anyone

My favorite 3 single coil pickup guitar

It looks and plays great. The maple neck with inlays of the bird inlays looks much more interesting that dots. The weight is very comfortable and not heavy. It has a chime tone, the pickups are pretty quiet, while providing a clear tone. The back pickup is bright, but there is no ice pick issues. Its not a perfect guitar, but when you consider the quality of the instrument, the sound, the way it feels and looks, this is the guitar for me. It won on the shootout against the Fender Professional II and the Vintage II 61.The Silver Sky is not as thin sounding to the Pro II, better/taller frets that the Fenders quality control is better.

Building on Leo's Legacy

It's not just the best Strat I've ever played, it's one of the best guitars I've ever played, period. Start with the neck. I was concerned about the 7.25" radius before I bought it also -- despite assurances from friends and reviewers who said the neck felt great. They were right. The action out of the box was a little bit high for my tastes, but once lowered slightly, the neck was as smooth and fast and easy to play as anything. I do lots of string bending and I never fret out. Paul has a way with necks. He's gotten all the other PRS necks right and I shouldn't have been surprised when he got this one right also.

Pickups are fantastic. They do all of the things you expect great Strat pickups to do, but the bridge pickup was the big surprise. It makes no apologies for not being a PAF they way single coil bridge pickups sometimes do. This guitar makes the case that a Super Strat is unnecessary. The bridge pickup stands on its own as a full, rich, twangy pickup. If you are the sort who prefer a bucker in the bridge, you might be surprised -- you won't miss it. And all of the pickups love gain. They thump and cut, yet retain lots of clarity. They are true single coils and do hum as you'd expect, but less so than most.

It's a PRS so it goes without saying that they fit and finish are flawless. How many guitar companies (or companies in general) earn their reputation for consistent quality with everything they make? I know that Fender inherited Leo's name and legacy 00 and they are a great company and a true American icon, but for all of the luthiers out there since Leo who've put their spin on the Strat, Paul may have done the best job of taking all of what makes a Strat great and bringing into the 21st Century without losing any of the magic of the genuine article. Why that should invoke ire in so many is beyond me. I think for many people, including me, if you could dream up the perfect Strat, it would be the Silver Sky.

If you love Strats, you really owe it to yourself to try one. It's that good.

Most Excellent Mayocaster!

I was lucky enough to get a Tungsten/Maple version a few weeks ago. The set-up is awesome. Electronics sound great through everything I have for studio equipment and amps. PRS's & Sweetwaters QA is spot on. John and Paul along with their team made a noteworthy guitar. I will be playing this thing in place of an 89 Clapton signature (now retired) and other respectable guitars. The 7.25 radius is different for me but very useable for soloing and chords. The fret wire is perfect. The tone span is full.
