Play the Legend: Gibson's SG Standard

Part of the company's Custom Color Series, the Gibson SG Standard is ready to rock your world with tantalizing tones and spotlight-ready aesthetics. It flaunts a lightweight double-cutaway mahogany body, and its rounded-profile mahogany neck offers extreme playing comfort, augmented by a supple 12-inch-radius Indian rosewood fingerboard. The SG Standard's 490R and 490T Alnico II pickups equip you with a fat array of snarling humbucker textures, ensuring a red-hot tonal treat every time you plug into your favorite amp. You also get acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, a mother-of-pearl headstock inlay, and a light-catching gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The SG Standard stands tall among Gibson's best-selling solidbody electric guitars — set a new musical standard for yourself by plugging into a veritable classic.

Classic SG design

The SG Standard's mahogany body features a thinner, more contoured shape than its predecessor, the Les Paul. Moreover, it has a double cutaway for easier upper-fret access and a long-tenon 19th-fret neck joint. The SG Standard retains a bound Indian rosewood fingerboard, acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, and a mother-of-pearl headstock inlay. An aluminum Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge, aluminum stopbar tailpiece, and Grover Rotomatic tuners with kidney buttons round out this axe's hardware. Finally, a gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish puts the perfect, spotlight-stealing visual touches on the SG Standard.

Unleashes patented PAF tone

Gibson voiced the pickups on the SG Standard for tonal characteristics similar to classic late-period PAF humbuckers, but with a slight increase in the upper mids for a more contemporary sound. The 490 matched pickup set truly shines when pumping out the classic fat, snarling tone that is the SG's stock-in-trade. These Gibson SG humbuckers are delightfully responsive, though — simply roll back the volume, and they clean up beautifully. We love this pickup combo, and so will you. Whether you're delivering your musical message with mellow jazz tones, bone-rattling crunch, or a blistering liquid inferno, the SG Standard rewards your touch with world-class responsiveness. The pole pieces of the 490R and 490T (Rhythm and Treble) pickups are aligned to match the string spacing at the neck and bridge, respectively.

Rounded neck and Plek'd frets

The Gibson SG Standard, famous for its comfortable, fast-action neck, is a perennial favorite among guitarists at Sweetwater. Whether you're chording down low or soloing up high, the distinctive rounded neck carve always feels just right. The guitar's iconic double-horned cutaway gives you free access to the high registers, while its Plek'd fretboard ensures effortless playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you'll likely own.

Reviews

Amazing SG Standard with full pickguard coming from one of the best Internet Vendors on the PLANET! (NOT GETTING PAID FOR THIS) ;)
I have always been partial to the Gibson SG. However, I am not a fan of the smaller half face pickguard. I always prefer the full face pickguard. I have 3 other SGs two custom shops, but this Gibson standard speaks to me. I love the way it plays, sounds and the way it came out of the box. I have ordered gold hardware for it and will be customizing it further so it will be less standard and more my Gibson SG Standard custom. I have paid full retail for this Gibson, so I am speaking as a consumer, so the next a paid promotion. In fact every purchase from them has cost me full retail. However, buying from Sweetwater brings you peace of mind. They stand behind the guitar or your purchase 100 percent. This is my 5th or 6th Gibson, 2 of which were CS. I have never had a problem, and when I have, I have called my engineer and he has taken care of it as soon as possible. Enjoy.

PS. Once I put on the gold hardware I will upload the pictures. :)
Music background: guitar 4 decades
Really great axe
Excellent player and couldn't be more excited about finally getting my SG. It was set up well out of the box and other than putting some 9's on her , it was ready to make music. My Sweetwater tech Connor went above and beyond to make it happen. So yes go ahead and get one you can thank me later
Music background: Just a guy who loves playing guitar

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Not only do they make many of the most iconic solidbody electric guitars of all time - the Les Paul, the SG, the Flying V - but they also produce classic hollowbody and semi-hollowbody models and some of the most iconic acoustic guitars on the planet. We play them all! Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery. We also have access to all the latest Gibson hardware, and the Sweetwater Guitar Repair Shop has upgraded countless guitars with their top-of-the-line humbuckers, classic P-90s, and more.
