The Prized SM7B Gets a Major Upgrade

The Shure SM7B is a legendary vocal microphone used and held in regard by musicians, podcasters, broadcasters, and streamers worldwide. That said, the SM7B possesses a notoriously low output, requiring users to utilize an in-line booster to get a usable level out of the mic. The Shure SM7dB is here to offer you a more elegant solution. This dynamic microphone serves up the tried-and-true SM7B sound; however, thanks to its built-in active preamp, you get output levels suitable for any recording setup or application — no separate booster required. You can bypass the built-in preamp if you want to replicate the original SM7B's performance, and the SM7dB includes its predecessor's oft-used bass roll-off and presence boost controls. To top it off, the Shure SM7dB boasts the SM7B's iconic look, ensuring that you can benefit from the cache that goes along with owning an industry-standard microphone.

Built-in active preamp

As mighty as the original SM7B sounds, many studio professionals argue its output leaves a bit to be desired. Thus, it's standard practice within professional circles to pair the SM7B with an in-line booster to ensure a solid, healthy output signal. The Shure SM7dB offers you the perfect solution by pairing an SM7B with a built-in active preamp. The SM7dB's preamp gives you the choice of +18dB or +28dB of gain, and if you want classic SM7B operation, you can bypass the preamp altogether. You can deploy the SM7dB anywhere you'd use its predecessor — with identical results — but you can leave your in-line booster at home.

True dynamic versatility

The Shure SM7dB includes the same dual-tone controls as its preamp-less predecessor. This dual-band switchable passive EQ offers low-cut and presence boost controls. Flat or with the low cut, the SM7dB is an amazing mic for male dialog and vocals, but defeating the presence boost makes it an excellent choice for bright sound sources and sibilant vocalists.

Superior design for superior results

Like its vaunted predecessor, the SM7dB delivers top-shelf results. For starters, there's an internal suspension and shockmounting system, which eliminates light vibration. Advanced electromagnetic shielding keeps out hum. Top it off with Sweetwater-favorite features such as an integrated swivel mount and a robust close-talk windscreen, and this mic has a whole lot to offer. And since it features a cardioid polar pattern, off-axis sound is never an issue for your Shure SM7dB.

Shure SM7dB Active Dynamic Microphone Features:

  • Pairs a Shure SM7B dynamic microphone with a built-in active preamp
  • Negates the need for a separate microphone and in-line booster
  • Bass roll-off and midrange emphasis (presence boost) controls accommodate a wide range of voices
  • Shielded against electromagnetic hum and broadband interference
  • Internal air suspension shock isolation virtually eliminates mechanical noise transmission
  • Effective pop filter eliminates the need for any add-on protection against explosive breath sounds
  • Ships with RK345B detachable close-talk windscreen
  • Yoke mounting with captive stand nut for easy mounting and dismounting
  • Classic cardioid polar pattern provides excellent off-axis rejection
  • Rugged construction for a lifetime of regular wear and tear
  • Boasts the same iconic look as the original SM7B

Reviews

Great Active Dynamic Microphone!
Functionally, it is one of the best mics I use for recording audio books. I have the Shure boom stand for it as well, mounted on my desk. I love the warm sound it captures! Adjustable filters and a preamp within the mic.
I use mine with a Universal Audio Volt 476P interface (recording into Ableton Live). (I owned a Focusrite interface in the past, but it was noisy!)
The sound is warm and extremely clear.
I highly advise you purchase the best possible cables as this is where you can pick up signals from other devices. I use the Mogami platinum; expensive but perfectly quiet.
Music background: I write science fiction novels, sometimes I make music...
Excellent Microphone
I have been using my Shure SM7dB almost daily since it arrived. The quality of the build is matched by the quality of sound captured. I'm doing mostly v/o recordings and have only minor quibbles. The integrated Cloud preamp is nice, but may not be necessary with the latest audio interfaces. Regardless, I love that the switches at the back of the unit are finally real practical switches! Prominent Shure branding and their black and neon green colors may not be for everyone, but suites me fine. If you're planning to mount on an arm be sure to also order the extension tube.

The solution for untreated rooms

I record in a partially treated bedroom, and my condenser mics always gave me that familiar boxy, echoey sound. They were not usable for professional results.

I narrowed it down to the SM7dB vs. the RE20. I didn't want to spend $ on an RE20 plus an external preamp, so I took a chance on the SM7dB with the built-in preamp and I'm really glad I did.

When I plugged it into my cassette multitracker, I had a clean, professional vocal sound. The room rejection is excellent even from a couple feet away. At about 3-4 inches, it really hits the sweet spot for rock vocals. Plosives are controlled, the tone is balanced, and my vocal sits in the track immediately without needing processing.

Since I commit to tape before mixing, I need something that sounds finished going in, and this mic delivers exactly that.

Even my girlfriend, who isn't into audio, noticed the difference right away and said it sounded way better than my previous recordings.

If you're recording in a room that isn't perfectly treated, the SM7dB is a great solution.

Love it
This mic is just what I needed. I'm a male tenor vocalist and I tend to have issues with large diaphragm condenser mics picking up unwanted sibilants and percussives, and I wanted something I could record with at home for laying down new ideas so I've been considering trying one of these mics as an alternative and I'm glad that I did! The condenser mics tend to make my higher register sound a bit thin which of course can be helped with a little EQ but this mic addressed that issue right out of the box. It's a very smooth mic and I love that I don't have to use a cloud lifter on it because it's built into this model. I've been very pleased with the results from the tracks I've laid down with this mic so far and I can see how it would be awesome for podcasts too. It takes EQ very well. So far I have no complaints about it at all. If you have a room that isn't treated very well this is a great option for you too. It picks up great but it doesn't pic up EVERYTHING in the potentially negative way the condenser mics do. AC cut on while you were laying a track down? It's ok! With this mic it probably won't be an issue like it would with a condenser. The condenser mics definitely have their place but for in home recording and in untreated rooms, I've found that this is an EXCELLENT CHOICE!
Incredible Mic!
This is one of the best microphones I've used. The internal preamp gives massive headroom and clarity. I couldn't be happier. Sweetwater's customer service is second to none and with the complimentary bag of sweets it was like getting multiple Christmas gifts at once.
