Shure SM7B: The Quintessential Dialog Mic

Shure’s SM7B is a go-to mic for all kinds of sources, but when it comes to capturing dialogue, it’s an absolute standout. You’ll find this dynamic beauty dangling from broadcast booms in voice-over, ADR, radio, and podcast studios around the world. There are two settings that let you tailor the SM7B to a wide range of voices and applications. Whether you want to bring out the resonance of a deep baritone, tame the brittleness of a high soprano, capture a whisper, or record a gunshot, the Shure SM7B is a must-have part of your rig.

True dynamic versatility

Investing in a microphone can be a bit intimidating because you never know how well it will perform. With its dual tone controls, the SM7B is exceptionally versatile. This dual-band switchable passive EQ offers low-cut and presence boost controls. Flat or with the low cut, the SM7B is an amazing mic for male dialog and vocals, but defeating the presence boost makes it an excellent choice for bright sound sources and sibilant vocalists.

Superior design for superior results

The SM7B has had staying power thanks in large part to smart engineering that still meets modern-day demands. For starters, there’s an internal suspension and shockmounting system, which eliminates light vibration. Advanced electromagnetic shielding keeps out hum. Top it off with Sweetwater-favorite features such as an integrated swivel mount and a beefy close-talk windscreen, this funky-looking mic has a whole lot to offer. And since it features a cardioid polar pattern, off-axis sound is never an issue for your Shure SM7B.

Deeply rooted history in pop music

Beyond voice-over work and podcasting, the SM7B has taken over mainstream music as the microphone of choice. This mic has flattered pop singers from Charlie Puth to Michael Jackson, delivering chart-topping records like Thriller time and time again. And over the years, Shure has only worked to improve the SM7B dynamic microphone, providing an even silkier top-end frequency response with their latest 2020 model. Whether you’re a part of the podcast boom or recording your next hit single, our Sweetwater Sales Engineers can assure you that the SM7B will excel.

Shure SM7B Features:

  • Quintessential dialogue microphone with a flat, wide-range frequency response
  • Bass roll-off and midrange emphasis (presence boost) controls accommodate a wide range of voices
  • Shielded against electromagnetic hum and broadband interference
  • Internal air suspension shock isolation virtually eliminates mechanical noise transmission
  • Effective pop filter eliminates the need for any add-on protection against explosive breath sounds
  • Ships with A7WS detachable close-talk windscreen
  • Yoke mounting with captive stand nut for easy mounting and dismounting
  • Classic cardioid polar pattern provides excellent off-axis rejection
  • Rugged construction for a lifetime of regular wear and tear

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SMOOOTH
I typically use another highend mic. A Studio Engineer suggested that I try this Mic. This Mic is smooth a silk.

A GREAT VOCAL MIC FOR MY AMATEUR (HAM) RADIO STATION
I have worked in broadcast engineering for the last 52 years. I needed a great sounding mic to add to my ham radio station, so I chose the Shure SM 7B. I talk around the world with my ham station and the audio quality of this mic helps to make it happen. The mic is connected to my UB802 mixer and feeds a DBX 266XS limiter. I use a little bit of reverb from a Boss RV6 into the FX input of the mixer. The mic is set to roll off the base and the high frequency switch is turned on. I get great comments on the superior quality of the sound from this mic. I recommend this mic highly you will not be disappointed.
Music background: former studio engineer at WLS AM. currently a video editor.
Love Love LOVE This Mic!
I was using a Bluebird mic for quite a bit which was $100 cheaper, decided to upgrade to this one because I heard great things. This mic has exceeded all expectations. For $400 it can't be beat in price. It adds such a nice raspy base to my vocal I was missing. This is by far the best mic I've used in the studio. 100% recommend.

Best microphone
This is honestly the best microphone iv ever owned. Im not a musician or content creator, but i play games on pc with friends, i dont use a headset either, full open speakers, this microphone pair with the goxlr i got from sweetwater, the microphone doesnt pickup any feedback from the other audio sources and i love it.
Who knew?
This microphone has the sensitivity and presence more like a condenser than anything else I've ever tried.

I'm planning on using it for podcasting, and in that endeavor I feel it will be more, much more than adequate.

My sales representative was instrumental, no pun intended, in my getting two of these microphones. I am just blown away with a terrific sound and sensitivity of these upper end Shure products. I would be willing to bet that these mics would be tremendous in a live situation! Kudos to SWEETWATER!
Music background: Going on 60 years.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?
Matt Emick
When paired with a tube preamp, this is my favorite microphone for getting awesome screaming rock vocals. It also excels at aggressive rapping. If you're ready to rock, this is definitely the mic to check out.
Nicolas Ley
I have been recording podcasts for myself and clients for the past few years. I was looking for a reliable microphone that was both great sounding and versatile enough to record a wide range of voices. The Shure SM7B was the answer to accurately capturing people in less than ideal situations and rugged enough to withstand the transportation from my studio to my clients' locations. Make sure to pair this with a Cloundlifter for best results, you won’t be disappointed!
Michael Bradac
Every time I use my SM7B I’m blown away by its ability to capture the natural timbre of a vocal performance. Aside from performing exceptionally well in broadcast settings, I use it as my go-to mic for aggressive rock vocals.
Charlie Davis
Easily one of my favorite vocal mics. However, the SM7B is far from a one-trick pony. If you can get two they make fantastic tom mics, but if one is all the budget will allow, they also work great on electric bass and guitar amps.
Jeff Barnett
You've heard the SM7 hundreds of times... Aside from being a very widely-used mic for broadcast, the SM7 is all over the best selling record ever made, Michael Jackson's, "Thriller." Bruce Swedien, who engineered the album, said: "When we were doing "Off The Wall", "Thriller," and "Bad" I ended up with six Shure SM7s. That is a fantastic mic."
Brian Dillon
I've recorded with a lot of great mics over the past decade, and the Shure SM7B is definitely on that list. I picked one up when I needed to make my vocals sound thicker, without throwing off the balance. * The SM7B was exactly what I was looking for. Unlike condensers, the SM7B doesn't pick up a lot of ambient noise. That makes it perfect when I need to record in rooms with less-than-ideal acoustics. And when I engage its presence boost, my vocals can cut through any mix, without sounding shrill.
