Play the Legend: Gibson's SG Standard

Part of the company's Custom Color Series, the Gibson SG Standard is ready to rock your world with tantalizing tones and spotlight-ready aesthetics. It flaunts a lightweight double-cutaway mahogany body, and its rounded-profile mahogany neck offers extreme playing comfort, augmented by a supple 12-inch-radius Indian rosewood fingerboard. The SG Standard's 490R and 490T Alnico II pickups equip you with a fat array of snarling humbucker textures, ensuring a red-hot tonal treat every time you plug into your favorite amp. You also get acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, a mother-of-pearl headstock inlay, and a light-catching gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The SG Standard stands tall among Gibson's best-selling solidbody electric guitars — set a new musical standard for yourself by plugging into a veritable classic.

Classic SG design

The SG Standard's mahogany body features a thinner, more contoured shape than its predecessor, the Les Paul. Moreover, it has a double cutaway for easier upper-fret access and a long-tenon 19th-fret neck joint. The SG Standard retains a bound Indian rosewood fingerboard, acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, and a mother-of-pearl headstock inlay. An aluminum Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge, aluminum stopbar tailpiece, and Grover Rotomatic tuners with kidney buttons round out this axe's hardware. Finally, a gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish puts the perfect, spotlight-stealing visual touches on the SG Standard.

Unleashes patented PAF tone

Gibson voiced the pickups on the SG Standard for tonal characteristics similar to classic late-period PAF humbuckers, but with a slight increase in the upper mids for a more contemporary sound. The 490 matched pickup set truly shines when pumping out the classic fat, snarling tone that is the SG's stock-in-trade. These Gibson SG humbuckers are delightfully responsive, though — simply roll back the volume, and they clean up beautifully. We love this pickup combo, and so will you. Whether you're delivering your musical message with mellow jazz tones, bone-rattling crunch, or a blistering liquid inferno, the SG Standard rewards your touch with world-class responsiveness. The pole pieces of the 490R and 490T (Rhythm and Treble) pickups are aligned to match the string spacing at the neck and bridge, respectively.

Rounded neck and Plek'd frets

The Gibson SG Standard, famous for its comfortable, fast-action neck, is a perennial favorite among guitarists at Sweetwater. Whether you're chording down low or soloing up high, the distinctive rounded neck carve always feels just right. The guitar's iconic double-horned cutaway gives you free access to the high registers, while its Plek'd fretboard ensures effortless playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you'll likely own.

Reviews

Gibson SG Standard
Guitar is absolutely amazing . Plays like a dream . Sounds amazing , and looks incredible as well . Always wanted an SG but wasn't really a fan of the cherry finish , soon as I saw this in T.V. Yellow I knew I had to have it . Only thing I was hesitant about was the fact it doesn't come with a hard-shell case , much to my surprise the included padded case is really nice .

Hopefully a new guitar cheers everybody up a bit!
25' SG Standard TV Yellow!
These Standards are exceptional and truly impressive. I'm a 40 year plus player, I have the Pauls, the 335's and the 339 that are great but these Standards for the price are unbeatable! These are working men and women guitars!! Really nice.

Got a deal on a "demo." I can't find whatever they thought deserved a discount.
SG Standards w 490's have a snarly character to the sound, plus you can turn down the pots and there are also other nice well balanced tones to be found. Controls work as they should.
I had a more sweet sounding '90's era SG '61 reissue once with '57 classics that I liked a lot too. This guitar has the plug-in fittings, and the 57 classic are available with those plug-in ends, but these 490's would be hard to improve on, to my ears.
Grover machines have been less than I remember from the sixties, but these are actually quite smooth with minimal lash. No neck dive on this one.
I like the Standard's "rounded" neck, vs slim taper.
All in all I think it's a great guitar that has some snarly character to the sound, plays great, and I love the TV yellow finish. You can see the wood through it.
My other (3) guitars have P-90's and are wired '50's era, with fat necks. This fits right in as an alternative sound, but not glaringly so.
