Gibson SG Standard: Play the Legend

Immortalized by Santana at Woodstock and smashed onstage by Townshend, the Gibson SG Standard is a rock icon. Gibson’s Nashville-made SG Standard is the real deal, arming you with a pair of toneful humbuckers, a rounded-profile neck, and a silky Plek’d rosewood fretboard with action that’s almost nonexistent. The Gibson SG Standard's lightweight mahogany body delivers great sustain and no pain, even if you play all night. And the nitro finish looks and feels luscious while enhancing the tone of this legendary solidbody electric guitar. Own your piece of rock history: the Gibson SG Standard.

The Gibson SG Standard is a lean, mean rock machine

The Gibson SG Standard, famous for its comfortable, fast-action neck, is a perennial favorite among guitarists at Sweetwater. Whether you’re chording down low or soloing up high, the distinctive rounded neck carve always feels just right. The Gibson SG Standard's iconic double-horned cutaway gives you free access to the high registers, while its Plek’d fretboard ensures effortless playability. The Gibson SG Standard is a lean, mean rock machine.

Matched humbucker set delivers real-deal PAF tone

Gibson voiced the pickups on the SG Standard for tonal characteristics similar to classic late-period PAF humbuckers, but with a slight increase in the upper mids for a more contemporary sound. The 490 matched pickup set really shines when pumping out the classic fat, snarling tone that is the SG’s stock-in-trade. These pups are delightfully responsive, though — simply roll back the volume, and they clean up beautifully. We love the Gibson SG Standard's pickup combo, and so will you. Whether you’re delivering your musical message with mellow jazz tones, bone-rattling crunch, or a blistering liquid inferno, the Gibson SG Standard rewards your touch with world-class responsiveness. The pole pieces of the 490R and 490T (Rhythm and Treble) pickups are aligned to match the string spacing at the neck and bridge, respectively.

Nitro finish for the look and feel of a classic

The Gibson SG Standard wears a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look vintage-y wonderful, but they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. The Gibson SG Standard has the look (and feel) of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Reviews

Almost perfect.
My first electric was a cheap Ibanez with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge, when I got my SG it took some getting used to but soon enough I fell in love with it. The finish is beautiful, it's light, upper fret access is very nice, the neck is a perfect shape etc. The only thing I didn't care for on this guitar was the pickups, after owning it for a year I recently switched out the 490T/R set for 500T/496R pickups since I'm a hard rock or metal player. SGs are infamous for the neck dive but I don't have an issue with it sitting down or standing up because I prop my leg on something when I play standing. Anyways pull the trigger and get one.
Music background: Young guitar player of 4 years.
Great acoustic sound and fun to play.
I've had this guitar since December. After some adjustments, it's really a great guitar. It is lightweight and has a great ring to it. The rhythm pickup is smooth with good clarity and sounds great for clean tones and distorted solos. I'm used to 498T's for the bridge and this is a 490T. I have to turn the gain up a little and then it is in 498T territory. I've recorded with it and I'm very pleased with its clarity and punch.
Nimble & Highly Playable
I've been a Les Paul player for 30 years now. I've owned dozens over the years and really enjoy them. Mostly Gibsons and a few of the new Epiphones. This SG was just an impulse buy late one night, but nowthat it's here I'm glad I pulled the trigger.
Mine is very balanced, (read; no Neck dive!) light-weight and just a lot of fun to play.
It arrived needing almost no setup at all, just my favorite strings and minor intonation.
Now, I've owned a Les Paul Tribute with this 490 pickup combo and I wasn't a big fan, I almost expected to need to change them straight away, but in this SG they really come to life. Great PAF tones, both clean and dirty. The neck shape has the perfect amount of chunk to it to make the transition from a Les Paul very easy.
This guitar is really inspiring me to play more, and to try new things. And that's exactly what great new gear is supposed to do, right?
SG Standard: A+
Ordered a second one because the first one was so good. Went with the plek pro and it arrived perfectly.
Awesome service and Amazing SG
Really can't be more pleased with the guitar and service. The photos of the guitar that Sweetwater posted were completely accurate and well lit. This SG plays great and pickups have great tone with bright crunchy bites and nice smooth clean sweeps. Setup was good right out of the box. Shipping was quick and the guitar arrived packed good and tight in protective wrap and double boxed. Really top notch Sweetwater!
