Gnarly Narrowfield Musicality: Hum-free Haymakers

The T-style guitar has remained synonymous with fleet-fingered technique, powerful performances, and shimmeringly sweet heat, since its inception, and the PRS SE NF 53 carries the torch of rock ’n’ roll workhorse tradition, blending premium tonewoods with malleable playability and roaring character. Following the critical acclaim given to this axe’s sibling, the SE NF 3, the SE NF 53 was endowed with an aural aperture that wields the same circuit sorcery to drive a deluge of dazzling dynamism. Two PRS-designed Narrowfield DD “S” pickups give you a smorgasbord of tonal possibilities, impressing Sweetwater guitarists with flexible yet focused sonic character. Outfitted with a lightning-fast neck, sculpted contours, and a brass-barrel-equipped bridge, the PRS SE NF 53 was engineered for expressive and sonorous performances, from subtle and smoldering to searing and scorching.

Rock roots and ferocious fundamentals

Luthiers at PRS spare no effort in dialing in the ideal tonewood concoction, and the PRS SE NF 53 is no exception. Its swamp ash body anchors the axe’s sonic profile in transparent, fundamental-strong voicing that’s balanced, focused, articulate, and largely free of overtones. Maple makes up the neck and fingerboard, imbuing tones with a warm, balanced voice, adding a shimmering veneer to every register without sacrificing clarity. Together, this tonewood combination conjures a landscape of electrifying possibilities to excavate innumerable, vibrant tones for your next studio or stage performance.

Narrowfield pickups, expansive sonic potential

Drawing inspiration from its bigger sibling, the SE NF 53 deploys the “S” variant of PRS’s Narrowfield DD (Deep Dish) pickups. With neck- and bridge-mounted options, this diverse dyad captures the peak characteristics of a humbucker, a P-90, a traditional single-coil, and a mini humbucker, merging them into a distinctively voiced and carefully tuned force of punchy, laser-focused tones. Master Tone and Volume controls are complemented by a 3-way blade switch, giving you the keys to robust onboard sound shaping.

Sculpted for exquisite expression

Meticulous contouring endows the PRS SE NF 53 with a menagerie of style and comfort, augmented by pairing an NF 53-profile neck with a 10-inch fingerboard radius, accommodating multitudes of play styles with ease. Its heel and treble-side cutaway were sculpted with exacting precision, providing unfettered access to all 22 frets and supplying players with the carefully calculated space needed to navigate the 25.5-inch scale. Plus, the classic steel plate-style bridge includes brass barrel saddles, amplifying sustain and clarity to meet your most explosive fretboard fireworks.

PRS SE NF 53 Features:

  • Classic T-style aesthetics meet modern musical malleability for an eye-catching workhorse
  • Swamp ash body provides a balanced aural anchor that’s clear, articulate, and largely overtone-free
  • Maple neck and fingerboard imbue tones with warmth, shimmer, and outstanding articulation in every register
  • Narrowfield DD “S” pickups supply dynamic tone-crafting possibilities across a duo of innovative humbuckers for maximum versatility that won’t compromise character
  • NF 53-profile neck means speed, control, and precision, comfortably accommodating multiple play styles with ease
  • Sculpted contouring ensures ample comfort and uncompromising accessibility to all 22 frets across its 10-in. radius fingerboard
  • PRS-designed steel plate-style bridge includes brass barrel saddles to enhance sustain, intonation, and clarity, for evocative and expressive support

Reviews

A Stunner in looks, tone, playability
So I've only had my latest PRS SE (7 now) for just over a few days. My sales engineer; Jason Thiele hooked me up with a gorgeous monster of a NF53. It had been on backorder due to popularity so I waited a month. I had gone to a local know guitar store and tried one out to be sure it was right for my tastes. But I am a Sweetwater loyalist so I reached out to Jason.

Upon receiving I waited 24 hrs before opening to allow for temperature change (I live in Texas) After opening the box, I was floored by the gorgeous popping swamp ash grain (dog hair). I run a Helix Floor (from Jason as well) and I'm still working on dialing in the tone I want. That said , running straight through my Princeton's or VOX (all via (Jason) it sounds incredible.

The DD NF pickups add incredible girt to the tonality just like my NF3 and the Swamp Ash Special center pickup. The neck is chunky like my SE McCarty 594 but has a satin vs gloss neck finish. Both play incredibly smooth I have long fingers so they work well for me.
Music background: Blues and Worship past 27 years.
Stunningly beautiful
Just received my NF 53 last Friday. I waited 24 hours before opening the box to allow it to adjust to the weather here in Texas. Upon opening the box, my Sales Engineer , Jason Thiele hooked me up with a stunningly beautiful guitar. The wood grain pops dramatically on both the front and back of the door. I have bought a few PRS SE guitars now through Jason from Sweetwater. I am always appreciative of the customer service and the rapport I have received over the years. I will write a deeper review on my guitar well I've had a chance to play it for a few hours.
Music background: Worship and blues guitarist.
Groundbreaker!
Amazing build from top to bottom. Incredible (& truly groundbreaking) pick-ups. Articulate perfect ringing notes & singing chords!! Fantastic playability. Exceptional value. PRS nailed this one. I mean NAILED IT!!! No hype.
Music background: Always learning!!
Feels and sounds great!
Never was the PRS fan boy but I am now. Sold the CS LP and go 2 SE's. The 594 and the NF53 is an absolute truck load of value here! Mr Smith, don't change a thing! If you find you cannot meet the price point, just raise the price a little it's worth it!!
Music background: 40+yrs playing and over 30 playing live
Bang for the buck!!
It's definitely worth the money. The tones are good. The rock tones are good. If there was one thing that I would change, it would be the location of the volume knob. A traditional control plate from T style. Guitars are very good for me. It's the primary reason why I didn't purchase a DGT or accustomed 24. The McCarty 594 is absolutely killer and so is the NF 53.
Music background: 40+yrs playing live

You don't even have to play guitar to know that PRS instruments are in a league of their own. With their exquisitely figured tops and premium appointments, each PRS is a playable work of art. But it goes way deeper than the surface. Every time Paul visits Sweetwater, we get a deeper look at his amazing instruments. We've even hosted several PRS Custom Shop events, complete with Paul's personal Wood Library! Whether they're his most affordable SE electric guitars, top-quality acoustics, or amps, it's always amazing to see what PRS comes up with. What's more, we keep a ton of PRS guitars in our amazing Guitar Showroom, so the staff at Sweetwater can get hands on with all of their latest models. We'd love to tell you all about them.
