Dynamic Mic for Mounted Toms, Floors, and More!

The Universal Audio SD-7 Dynamic Microphone leverages the same Hemisphere technology found within UA’s other Standard series mics, resulting in five of the most iconic dynamic instrument microphones together in a single, sleek package. This dynamite cardioid dynamic mic is poised to become a daily studio staple from the moment you unbox it, with its hand-selected capsule that handles extremely high SPL, easy-to-place design, and all-metal construction that can easily take a whack from a wayward drumstick. Sweetwater studio engineers are quick to point out that the SD-7 isn’t just for drum set toms, however — look at the Hemisphere interface for your SD-7, and you’ll see some familiar faces that have featured on bass cabs and other loud instruments for decades. Whether you track drums, percussion, guitars, vocalists, or other high-decibel instruments, the Universal Audio SD-7 with Hemisphere mic modeling technology belongs in your mic locker.

Explore Hemisphere’s virtual mic locker

Included with your new SD-7 microphone, the Hemisphere modeling plug-in takes the concept of UA’s Sphere software and applies it to a dynamic mic meant for snare drums, guitar cabs, and other loud instruments. It spans models of five iconic dynamic mics from the world’s most respected manufacturers. Whether you’re looking for the industry-standard snare drum sound or other unique instrument sounds, Hemisphere has you covered — and then some. Better still, Hemisphere is compatible with every drum microphone in Universal Audio’s Standard series, and includes modeled microphones optimized for the SD-3 snare/drum instrument mic, the SD-5 kick drum mic, and the SD-7 tom/instrument mic.

Enjoy total control with Hemisphere

There’s more to like about Hemisphere beyond the larger-than-life microphone models. The plug-in also offers proximity, axis, and filter parameters. The proximity knob virtually increases or decreases the distance of your microphone from the source, so you don’t have to physically move the mic to achieve an optimal sound. Furthermore, the axis control virtually alters the axis at which the mic is placed — an industry first. This control helps tame harsh, unwanted frequencies on your guitar amps, snare drums, and much more. Most importantly, Hemisphere is so powerful that you can change the filter, proximity, and axis controls even after you’re done tracking. Using Hemisphere is the easiest way to get perfect recordings the first time.

Included Hemisphere mic models:

  • DN-421B: Patterned after a modern 421-style mic — which has a slightly brighter and harder sound than earlier iterations — this is arguably the most famous tom mic of all time, plus it's no slouch on kick drum or brass instruments.
  • DN-421S: Based on a rare early 421-style mic with script logo, this model has slightly more vintage character, making it useful for warming up your guitar amplifiers, drums, or even vocals.
  • RB-160: Evokes the sound of a vintage '60s-era ribbon mic with a rich mid-forward character. This mic was famously used to record Jimi Hendrix's guitar amp, and a pair were used to record the booming drums on Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks."
  • DN-409N: Based on the earliest 409-style mic, this vintage version boasts more coloration than current production models, making it a fine choice for electric guitar and vocals. The vocals on Pink Floyd's Live at Pompeii were recorded with this mic.
  • DN-441: The classic 441-style mic has been used by countless artists, including Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, and Tame Impala. Many engineers have relied on this model for its balanced and natural sound on vocals, snare drums, and guitar amps.

Universal Audio SD-7 Dynamic Microphone Features:

  • Cardioid dynamic microphone designed for drum set toms, floor toms, percussion, or other loud instruments
  • Hemisphere plug-in gives you access to 5 classic microphone models
  • Proximity, filter, and axis controls shape your sound — before or after tracking
  • Hand-selected dynamic capsules to handle extreme SPL in daily use
  • Rugged all-metal construction stands up to regular use and wear and tear
  • Vintage aesthetic is cool, classic, and never goes out of style
  • Easy to place; standmount with adapter and storage pouch and box are also included

Reviews

Fantastic Upgrade
If you've been using cheap tom mics in a home studio like me....just do yourself a favor and get these. It is a world of difference compared to what I had before. Off axis rejection is fantastic, and they sound great on their own even without the modeling plugin. Add in Hemisphere to get the 421 or 441 sound and the results are pretty stunning. It works great on snare drum as well. The results make it feel like I spent a ton of money on upgrades when really I didn't have to. I like that.
Good Mic, Underwhelming Modeling
The SD-7 feels well made, it's easy to position and its hypercardioid pattern provides good isolation from unwanted sound sources. To my ears, it's fuller sounding than an SM57 but a little brighter than an RE20—it's somewhere in the middle. It works well for vocals and electric guitar. I haven't tried it on drums but I'm sure it works well there, too. That being said, the Hemisphere Modeling is mediocre at best. Scrolling through different models feels like you're toggling through EQ presets. You're probably better off using traditional EQ and practicing good mic placement rather than relying on the plugin to make you sound better. Bottom line—it's a good mic but I don't think you're missing anything with the plugin.
