Raising the Revstar Standard

Yamaha’s Revstar Standard RSS02T is an update of the original Revstar series of guitars, refined to offer improved comfort and even more striking visuals! This maple-topped double-cut’s lightweight chambered mahogany body is loaded with two rich and warm sounding VP5 pickups that deliver classic P-90 tones — from clean jazz textures on the neck pickup to wild overdriven leads on the bridge. The neck is comprised of carbon-reinforced mahogany so that it will stay straight and true in even the most challenging of environments. What’s more, Yamaha has equipped this Revstar with their proprietary “focus” switch that shifts your tone’s resonant frequency and supercharges your pickup’s power. If you’re looking for a high-performance, no-nonsense axe with explosive tones, rock-solid playability, and sleek modern aesthetics, the RSS02T sets the standard.

Comfortably curved Revstar body

The Revstar’s curvy lines and classic aesthetics are said to be inspired by the utilitarian British Café racer motorbikes found in 1960s-era London, adding a tough no-frills attitude to these sleek guitars. The unique double-cut chambered body was developed using Yamaha’s Acoustic Design process to optimize the Revstar’s balance, deliver a resonant tone, and reduce weight. One strum of the RSS02T is all it takes to see how Yamaha’s research paid off: the Revstar’s body is a supremely comfortable design that showcases Yamaha’s steadfast dedication to musical innovation!

Yamaha-designed P-90 pickups deliver iconic tone

As far as we're concerned here at Sweetwater, every guitarist should have a guitar loaded with P-90 single-coil pickups in their collection. You get the snap and spank of a single-coil pickup, but with the girth and low-mid richness that you'd expect from a humbucker. The custom-designed VP5 P-90 pickups in the RSS02T utilize Alnico V magnets, a silver baseplate, and plain enamel wire, creating a clear, vintage-inspired tone with plenty of bite. Set your tube amplifier at its breakup point, and you'll be able to take the RSS02T from clean and chiming to blazing overdrive just with the volume knob.

Bring your sound into focus

Yamaha’s Revstar line already introduced us to their clarity-boosting “Dry” switch, and the RSS02T offers another distinct tonal feature to stand out from the crowd: the “Focus” switch. This dual-purpose push-pull switch adjusts the resonant frequency of your guitar’s tone and kicks up the power. When testing it out at Sweetwater, we found that it’s an incredibly versatile feature that’s just as good at achieving “rolled off” jazz tones as it is for boosting your amp into overdrive territory.

Yamaha Revstar Standard RSS02T Electric Guitar Features:

  • Ultra-comfortable and lightweight chambered mahogany body with a maple top
  • 3-piece carbon-reinforced mahogany set neck with double-cutaway offers incredible upper fret access
  • Yamaha VP5 P-90 pickups deliver pristine and organic clean tones, with the classic P-90 bite when overdriven
  • “Focus” switch shifts your tone’s resonant frequency and amps up your power
  • Jumbo stainless steel frets are highly resistant to wear
  • Highly playable 12-inch fingerboard radius
  • Rock-solid Tune-o-matic bridge and sleek racing tailpiece

Fun Guitar
I wanted to upgrade my backup electric guitar in my collection. My main guitar is a PRS CE24 and I realized that I never picked up my Epiphone LP after getting that. I wanted a guitar that was unique and different from my PRS but still fit into my style of music. This guitar definitely fits the bill!

The different tones from the guitar are so fun to play around with and the p90s are fun. The boost is interesting as well. The stainless steel frets on a guitar of this style and price range is a big plus for me. My one complaint is that the tuning stability is the worst out of all the guitars I've owned. It's not horrible but definitely requires more tunes in a session than my others. I will try some graphite in the nut at next string change. If that doesn't fix it, then I might be paying for a nicer nut in the future.

Overall, I am thrilled with this purchase. I am reaching for this guitar just as much as my PRS. And the unique sounds I'm getting from it is inspiring me in different ways.
Absolutely Amazing
I love this guitar. If you are looking for a guitar where the quality and features go way above the price, this is it. I think all Yamaha guitars are phenomenal, and this is no exception. I wanted a guitar with P90s and these pickups do not disappoint. They deliver on the "spank" sound. The set up and features of the guitar are great. I love the "in between" options on the pick up selectors. The neck plays beautifully. And I know that sound is supposed to be the important thing, but let's be honest - we all want our guitars to look cool. This guitar looks perfect. I love that it has a different and unique look. Seriously great guitar for the price. I would buy it all over again. Everything about it is amazing. Get it.
Very nice
Everything about this guitar screams quality. It's the only guitar that I didn't have to set up, just had to tune it up and go. The P90's are low output but the push pull knob gives it a little more juice if you want to try and push the amp a little.
Great value, good looker, nice player, and flexible tone palette
For the money, I consider this guitar to be a tremendously good value. It is well made, looks great, plays well, and offers a wide variety of sounds. I'm not ready to give up my Memphis ES-335 just yet, but this guitar is definitely occupying a significant chunk of my playing time. Although I have yet to try it out in a band setting, I can see where it would be a flexible solution for a wide variety of styles. I have been wanting a P90-style guitar for a while now, and this one has been on my list of considerations for over a year. Now that it is finally in stock, I took the plunge and have not been disappointed.

I was pleased to find that the neck on the Revstar is nearly identical to that of my ES-335, and that is a very good thing as I can play both for extended periods of time without any hand or finger discomfort. Although not a particularly light-weight guitar (mine is 8 lb. 4 oz. per the Sweetwater website at purchase -- thanks for that info!), it is well-balanced, not too heavy for extended playing, and contributes to a very nice sustain. And the color and tailpiece design just plain look cool to my eyes.

A real winner!
Music background: Decades as a performing musician
Happily surprised
Have been on a question for my go to P90 guitar for a while now, trying all kinds of Les Paul and SG Specials, PRS, Rock N Roll Relics, looking for the "best" and most "inspiring" to play. My budget has been up to $5k for something just stellar.

Today, I happened to be in the store looking at the P90 guitars and trying a few and at the very end was considering maybe one of the nicer sounding Les Paul Specials I had played when I saw the Revstar on the wall. I'd never tried these guitars, so I said "what the hell... let's give it a whirl". It wasn't my favorite looking guitar, but had its own cool kinda vibe.

I plugged it in and after about 1 minute of playing it, exclaimed "holy $%&#!". How the hell did they do this at this price point?! Needless to say I walked out of the store with it and can't put it down. I'm in love with how the guitar sounds, and feels to play. For me at least, it seriously blows several $5k Gibsons out of the water in terms of what I was looking for. Great job Yamaha. I'm super surprised I don't see more artists playing these. I'd seen Chris Buck play them, but sort of blew it off as maybe he's just paid to endorse... but woah... this is a serious beast of tone mojo. I need to try the humbucker equipped version next, but they didn't have any in the store.
