Raising the Revstar Standard

Yamaha’s Revstar Standard RSS02T is an update of the original Revstar series of guitars, refined to offer improved comfort and even more striking visuals! This maple-topped double-cut’s lightweight chambered mahogany body is loaded with two rich and warm sounding VP5 pickups that deliver classic P-90 tones — from clean jazz textures on the neck pickup to wild overdriven leads on the bridge. The neck is comprised of carbon-reinforced mahogany so that it will stay straight and true in even the most challenging of environments. What’s more, Yamaha has equipped this Revstar with their proprietary “focus” switch that shifts your tone’s resonant frequency and supercharges your pickup’s power. If you’re looking for a high-performance, no-nonsense axe with explosive tones, rock-solid playability, and sleek modern aesthetics, the RSS02T sets the standard.

Comfortably curved Revstar body

The Revstar’s curvy lines and classic aesthetics are said to be inspired by the utilitarian British Café racer motorbikes found in 1960s-era London, adding a tough no-frills attitude to these sleek guitars. The unique double-cut chambered body was developed using Yamaha’s Acoustic Design process to optimize the Revstar’s balance, deliver a resonant tone, and reduce weight. One strum of the RSS02T is all it takes to see how Yamaha’s research paid off: the Revstar’s body is a supremely comfortable design that showcases Yamaha’s steadfast dedication to musical innovation!

Yamaha-designed P-90 pickups deliver iconic tone

As far as we're concerned here at Sweetwater, every guitarist should have a guitar loaded with P-90 single-coil pickups in their collection. You get the snap and spank of a single-coil pickup, but with the girth and low-mid richness that you'd expect from a humbucker. The custom-designed VP5 P-90 pickups in the RSS02T utilize Alnico V magnets, a silver baseplate, and plain enamel wire, creating a clear, vintage-inspired tone with plenty of bite. Set your tube amplifier at its breakup point, and you'll be able to take the RSS02T from clean and chiming to blazing overdrive just with the volume knob.

Bring your sound into focus

Yamaha’s Revstar line already introduced us to their clarity-boosting “Dry” switch, and the RSS02T offers another distinct tonal feature to stand out from the crowd: the “Focus” switch. This dual-purpose push-pull switch adjusts the resonant frequency of your guitar’s tone and kicks up the power. When testing it out at Sweetwater, we found that it’s an incredibly versatile feature that’s just as good at achieving “rolled off” jazz tones as it is for boosting your amp into overdrive territory.

Yamaha Revstar Standard RSS02T Electric Guitar Features:

  • Ultra-comfortable and lightweight chambered mahogany body with a maple top
  • 3-piece carbon-reinforced mahogany set neck with double-cutaway offers incredible upper fret access
  • Yamaha VP5 P-90 pickups deliver pristine and organic clean tones, with the classic P-90 bite when overdriven
  • “Focus” switch shifts your tone’s resonant frequency and amps up your power
  • Jumbo stainless steel frets are highly resistant to wear
  • Highly playable 12-inch fingerboard radius
  • Rock-solid Tune-o-matic bridge and sleek racing tailpiece

Reviews

Amazing guitar- especially for the price!

Man, am I glad I got the chance to get my hands on one of these! Loved that I was able to choose from several serial numbers and get the exact guitar I wanted. The finish is absolutely beautiful, really capturing that sunset aesthetic they were going for. The fingerboard is so dark it almost looks like ebony, and the somewhat muted inlays bring a certain classiness to the guitar, I feel. Fret ends are immaculate, can't feel them at all. Due to the chambering and cutaway, this is an insanely easy guitar to play- it almost feels like an extension of my body. Action was super low and although I did adjust the pickup height, that's something I do for all my guitars when I purchase them, so that's in no way a con, just personal preference.

The pickups really straddle that edge of having much more clarity than a humbucker would, but being more full than a single-coil. Between the awesome out-of-phase sounds you get from the 2 and 4 positions, plus the "focus" push-pull, this is an incredibly versatile guitar. Reminds me of the strangle switch on my Jaguar, giving a very unique voice you can't really find anywhere else.

Out of all the guitars I've owned, this would probably be the easiest to recommend. Super easy playability, premium upgraded features like a bound fingerboard, satin-finished neck, and stainless steel frets- there's so much on offer here that you'd normally have to pay 2-3x to get these on another guitar. And for just around $, this thing is a steal. Do yourself a favor and get one!

Also special thanks to my gear guy at Sweetwater, Chris Friedman, who personally handled the buying process. He's awesome and should get a raise :)

There is no better P90 guitar for the money.

There is also quite possibly no measurably better P90 guitar on the market.

I have nothing original to say about this instrument…

As everyone else has said, the neck and frets are a masterpiece, the sound quality and tonal variety is stunning, and for someone who tends to resist unconventional guitar shapes (tending to favor the classic Gibson and Fender shapes by default), I have to say, this is one of the most comfortable and playable instruments I've ever had.

I have a beautiful Gibson ES-335 with humbuckers that costs around $ new. Thankfully, I didn't pay this, as I purchased the instrument used.

The Revstar Standard RSS02T is in the exact same league as my Gibson ES-335 in terms of quality.

If you're looking for a guitar that has balanced, musical single coil P90 tones (AND EXTRA tonal options as a bonus) and top-notch playability, seriously: just buy a Revstar already.

This guitar is a tour de force of everything that can go right with guitar design. My buddy and I cannot put ours down… I bought mine 3 days after he brought his over, especially after watching the Philip McKnight intensive review online.

The Revstar is fantastic… you won't regret it if you actually appreciate a quality instrument.

Also, a quick shoutout to Sweetwater for their 55 point check system… the guitars really do come out of the box ready to play, and that has simply never happened to me before when purchasing a guitar unless it was built directly from the luthier.

What a quality guitar
I bought a PRS S2 24 a few years back it was a decent guitar. I purchased this Yamaha Revstar and right out of the box it's screams quality. Want a nice guitar, attention to detail and plays like butter.

There is no better guitar near this price point that even comes close.
Solidly Built
I had the pleasure to work on this guitar, for a customer.

This guitar is solidly built and plays really well. Yamaha, in general, makes great products, from musical instruments (including pianos) to dirt bikes and we expect good quality from Yamaha. That said, I did find a few imperfections on this one, but they were so minor that I decided to keep my review at 5-stars.

See the review video for details.

It also has some setup tips, which might help you, if you buy this guitar.

Revstar....? More like BESTar!
I purchased the Indonesian made RevStar a few weeks ago. I played it side by side with the Japanese made model through a Kemper in the Sweetwater Store. Zero discernible difference in sounds, feel, weight and function. They were both FANTASTIC!
I'm a lifelong Strat guy but I love the 5 way options, P90's, and focus tone knob for passive boost. It's... just fantastic. I'm nearing 50 and owned a lot of high dollar instruments. Hard to say this but... I this could be the best guitar I've ever owned. Way underestimated and WAY over delivers!
