Pro Co's Legendary Hard-clipping Distortion

There aren't many dirt boxes that can match the RAT for flexibility — its hard-clipping distortion has been a pedalboard staple for four decades and counting. The Pro Co RAT 2 is the modern iteration of this classic pedal. Whether you use it to hot rod your British high-gain head, send your on-the-brink American-style combo into sweet overdrive, or inject your squeaky-clean high-headroom amp with heavy-duty, fuzz-like grunge, the RAT 2 yields the filthy, harmonic-rich saturation that has graced a thousand influential albums. This distortion pedal boasts the same 3-knob layout as its vintage counterparts, along with a rugged on/off footswitch, a stylish "A" status LED, and eye-grabbing glow-in-the-dark graphics. Rock, blues, punk, jazz, and more — there's a reason that the RAT is one of the most coveted distortion pedals out there.

Dial in a wide range of usable tones

The RAT 2 includes the same intuitive top-panel controls as its forerunners: Distortion, Filter, and Volume. You use the Distortion knob to dial in the total amount of saturation. At its minimum setting, this control acts as a fuel-injected dirty boost; at maximum, it delivers harmonic-laden fuzz tones. The Filter knob gives you lots of sonic flexibility. Turn the control counterclockwise for mix-piercing tones with lots of clarity; twist it clockwise to roll off your highs for a warm, cranked amp-like tone. The Volume knob adjusts your total output level. You can run the RAT 2 at unity gain for a bit of added grit or crank it to punish the front end of your amp. Countless guitarists here at Sweetwater have a RAT on their pedalboard — it's a must-have stompbox.

Pro Co RAT 2 Features:

  • The famous RAT-style hard-clipping distortion
  • Delivers everything from subtle overdrive to metal-ready high gain and fuzz-filled anarchy
  • Distortion knob dials in the total amount of saturation
  • Filter knob conjures up a myriad of sonic textures
  • Volume knob adjusts your total output level
  • Near-bulletproof metal enclosure
  • Rugged on/off footswitch, stylish "A" status LED, and glow-in-the-dark graphics

Gift For A Buddy
Grabbed a Gift for a friend and was recommended this product as a versatile distortion option for a friend of mine. Sounded great before and after paint. The size and price were a perfect platform for a one a kind gift, Big Dhout out to Billy for the recommendation. Think he's going to love it.

Best distortion, fuzz and overdrive pedal
Simply the best pedal that does everything you'd want to shape your tone. I just put a boost with it and I'm golden. If I want reverb or phaser I use it from my amp.
Pro Rat
I'm a huge fan of the tones that David Gilmour creates. My pedal board reflects that. The Rat was the missing link. Very easy to dial in the levels from smooth overdrive to full on distortion. I'm very happy with this pedal. This and a good delay will put you right in the middle of DG's tones.

Time to buy a new Rat
Back in 1979, I was working in Harry's Music Store in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Rat box was new then and sounded great. Earth Wind & Fire guitarist Al McKay came into the store to look around as the band has a concert in town that night.
We showed him the Rat and he bought one. Then, he gave us tickets to their concert that night.
I used my Rat from 1979 till a few years ago when I gave it my guitar playing nephew.
Now I miss it so it looks like I will be buying the latest version soon.
I have attached a link below to a 1990 video where I used the Rat on my solo.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?
Charlie Davis
The Pro Co Rat 2 does anything from subtle boosting up to some of the raunchiest fuzz you could ask for. I've had one on my pedalboard for about two years and it's not going anywhere.
