The Return of the BOSS Rotary Simulator

Put the power of the famous Leslie rotary effect on your pedalboard with the BOSS RT-2 Rotary Ensemble pedal! Fans of the highly celebrated RT-20 here at Sweetwater are elated to see the return of one of the most feature-rich rotary simulators, with the smaller physical footprint now consuming less space on your pedalboard than its predecessor. The same expansive tonal options are all here, from the variable rotary speeds to the tube-simulated drive circuit, then custom-tailor your sound to achieve your perfect balance between horn and bass rotor sounds, adding to the dimensionality of your tone. Finally, you can instantly see each simulated speaker rotation with the updated virtual rotor display. From subtle, chorus-like shimmer to expressively fast textures, the RT-2 Rotary Ensemble stands ready to excite your tone, whether you’re a guitar player, keyboardist, or singer.

Authentic rotary representation

The classic Leslie rotary speaker sound was a staple for organists throughout the 1950s and 1960s, before finding new life in the late ’60s and ’70s with artists like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix. It continued to influence guitar tones into the ’80s and ’90s, embraced by legends such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Soundgarden, among many others. Unlike the original speaker boxes that featured only one or two speeds, you have greater, more exacting control over the BOSS RT-2’s virtual rotors with the two rotary controls — one for each slow or fast setting. Once activated, these high- and low-frequency drivers ramp up naturally, as if activating the physical motors found in the original Leslie cabinets, such as the famous 122, 147, or 981. With selectable rise and fall times, you can choose how quickly the RT-2 ramps up to full speed and winds down. Even the Brake function slows down the virtual rotor speeds at a natural rate before stopping, giving your tone a slight airy quality.

Expansive tone in a space-saving package

Occupying the same space as the typical single-switch pedal from the BOSS Compact line, the RT-2 packs a wealth of sound-sculpting options within its two stacked potentiometer controls, including fast and slow speeds and a preamp drive to give your spinning sound extra bite. Three modes are available via a selectable switch to craft the basis of your rotary speaker sound, from vintage rotary stylings to catapulted, hyper-modulated intensity that delivers enormous sonic width.

Even more options for tone sculpting are ready for you on the back of the RT-2. Want more chiming top-end or booming lows in your mix? Flip the Drive Knob switch, and the Drive control turns into a horn/bass rotor frequency balance. With the RT-2, all the rotary controls you need are easily accessible in a single pedal enclosure.

More control than meets the eye

No rotary effect can be complete without the ability to spread your modulated sound, which is why the BOSS RT-2 includes stereo outputs to truly immerse yourself in the rotating speaker experience. What’s more, the single-button, multimode footswitch not only engages and disengages your perfect rotary sound, but it also serves as your slow/fast switch by simply holding your foot down. Finally, for even greater control, the Speed jack accepts your favorite external footswitches or expression pedals for even greater, real-time control over your rotary speed, among other functions you desire.

BOSS RT-2 Features:

  • Rotary speaker tones with an expansive array of control options in single pedal form
  • Virtual display virtually mimics horn and bass rotor rotation
  • 3-position Mode switch activates different voices of varying modulation
  • Primary pedal switch controls both effect on/off and Slow/Fast modes
  • 2 selectable Rise/Fall settings control how quickly the virtual rotors ramp up or wind down
  • Built-in Brake function naturally brings the 2 rotors to a halt instead of abruptly
  • Speed control jack accepts expression pedal and external footswitch inputs to control rotary speed in real time
  • Rear panel Drive Balance selector switches the Drive control’s function to balance between high and low frequency volume

Reviews

Excellent sound love the compact size and features
Previous owner of the original rt and both versions of the h n k rotosphere and I can say that this pedal offers a great Leslie effect and experience that puts it in its own class with the features modes and running in stereo both wet or split is awesome for those that complain about no blend knob running in stereo with output b as dry is better in my opinion for a dual amp effect when adding additional chorus and sounds great in stereo. The additional features of using an expression pedal is cool but you can't operate the brake feature with it you will need a fs-7 selector to use the brake feature. I have only ran the pedal in front of two amps and believe this pedal would excel in an effects loop as well from my experience with the pedal and placement with its brothers and sisters in the pedal chain I run.
BEST ROTARY PEDAL EVER

The Leslie speaker effect is my fave modulation for electric guitar. Chorus, flanger and phaser pedals come and go depending on the set list but a Leslie is always gonna be there.

I've had the discontinued Line6 Roto-Machine, a fragile expensive and bulky H&K Tube Roto-Sphere, an overpriced Neo MiniVent, an obscure KJams and a Strymon Lex. I've tried the EHX Lester G. They're all good. This one is the best.

A great pedal gets a firm grip and seems to really grab the signal and process it to within an inch of its life. Some Leslie pedals sound weak and anemic. A good Leslie emulation has been described as "chewy" or "juicy." This one is both. Thick, rich, syrupy swirls of twirling spinning sound.

The tiny toggle switches that let you adjust ramp and spin speeds, bass rotor/rotating horn balance and drive level will get this thing to sound just how you want. The extension tap switch for switching between spin speeds is the best way to facilitate that function. The three tone settings offer flexibility. (Unlike most guitar players I don't like distortion. I like a fat clean tone with an edge of breakup like Tim Pierce. So I use Setting One, the "plain vanilla" traditional Leslie sound. It works great and has plenty of tube-ish grind.) This pedal is well thought-out and is set up right.

The spinning light display is more than a gimmick too. It really works, I used it to set the slow speed just the way I like it.

And finally, the size, the physical size. Most Leslie pedals still on the market are double-wide; they take up more space than the traditional Boss stompboxes. To be honest that's what attracted me to this one in the first place! Plus of course I know Boss quality and reliability.

Leslie simulation
I like the way it does a controlled ramp up and down , I would like to see the spinning red blue light in the middle take the place of the " on " LED, it's distracting
I can see the value of the drive mode if you play very clean all the time , but I have it dialed off as the Dustin it adds does not necessarily stack well with an already distorted signal , it is a bit much
I am only finding the I setting , not the II and III settings to be usable so far , again this would be due to using it on a distorted amp sound
I am replacing a real motion sound Leslie as lugging it around is no longer an option . I will be trying it out with a full band in the near future. The Neo Vent may still be the Gold Standard but for the price it's pretty good
Music background: Semi Awesome
Love it!
RT-2 works well with my keyboard. With both organ sounds and electric pianos, it adds really nice color and depth.

Boss RT-2
The pedal provides real usable rotary sounds. When I first got the pedal, I kept playing Tom Petty's "You don't know how it feels." It had that sound. Then, I used a jangle box compressor with a Boss DD-7 in conjunction with the Boss RT-2. One received the sound of the Who's "Amazing Journey" off of "Tommy." If one used a TS-9 pedal with the RT-2, it was bluesville for days.

I would state that one needs an expression pedal (Boss EV-30) to fully utilize the pedal. Also, I am not sure one needs a RT-2 and Univibe on the same board. The RT-2 has a similar tone to the univibe.

I do recommend the Boss RT-2 to anyone who wants a rotary sound in a smaller form factor that the RT-20. My only real complaint is that it does not do midi. However, that is a minor gripe. Play one and enjoy.
