A 5-string Violin with Massive Electronic Capability

From the first bow slide across the strings of the RV5PEFA 5-string Acoustic-electric Violin, violinists knew it offered something special — playability that rivals a conventional 4-string instrument. Crafted from carved Carpathian spruce, the RV5PEFA delivers a clear, open tone with subdued projection to safeguard against unwanted feedback in amplified situations. Speaking of which, you'll be blown away by this violin's plugged-in tone, which is well balanced across all strings, with a rich sound that's guaranteed to attract attention. Also, with the RV5PEFA you have direct access to Instant-Active technology; taking the pickup from passive to active in seconds for hotter signal. The RV5PEFA also boasts a camouflaged volume knob, which matches the instrument's eye-catching varnished finish for a head-turning, traditional look.

Familiar feel

Although it's armed with five strings, the Realist RV5PEFA plays like a 4-string violin. You'll greatly appreciate the RV5PEFA's custom-designed bridge curvature, and its expertly arranged string spacing ensures a feel that will be familiar to traditional 4-string players. And what can you do with a 5-string violin? Well, the violinists here at Sweetwater have used the RV5PEFA to replicate viola passages and to double cello parts (an octave up, of course) without switching instruments.

Instant-Active Technology lets you choose your pickup tone

Starting with a well-balanced tone capture across all strings, and a rich, full voice with heaps of unparalleled sound color, the Instant-Active pickup on the RV5PEFA offers violinists something a little different. Play in passive mode or engage the rechargeable preamp for active tones that offer a hotter signal. This gives players the power to contour the RV5PEFA as though it were an electric guitar. What's more, a charge time of only 90 seconds provides up to 48 hours of performance time. To top it off, the RV5PEFA's near-invisible volume knob in its treble-side C bout, as well as its discreet output jack, give this acoustic-electric violin an attention-grabbing traditional look.

Reviews

Great choice if you need an electric that has nice sound and cannot use acoustic in the setting
We purchased these instruments to use in stage settings where the ambient and required sound levels and mic'ing precluded the use of full acoustics. This unit has a great sound, the PRO version has a tone control, active pickup/boost using a super-capacitor (no battery) to improve the signal quality/clarity (use for solos, also if you have pedals that need more gain), and a volume control. We use carbon presto series bows with these violins - since stages can be dangerous places to have your best gear. We use two violins connected to a Fishman Artist as stage monitor, XLR mix out to the house/band board, and it sounds and mixes great in all sorts of settings. For the highest qaulity work we have full acoustic violins that cost over 10X more than these kits, and we use DPA 4099 instrument mics and twin UHF Shure wireless transmitters to our own Yamaha mixer before we send to the house or to a pre-amp/amp/speaker setup. However, acoustic instruments and open-air mics like the DPA-4099 are extremely sensitive to ambient sound levels, sympathetic vibration, and thus feedback - acoustic instruments will "air couple" with ambient/drums/bass/piano at high volume levels, and the DPA's need fine adjustment of gain and compression as well as placement in the sound stage to avoid feedback. The solution for us was the Realist Pro 5-string - good sound, good electronics, no feedback issues, great for gigs with bands. Don't bother with the non-Pro if you are a violinist already - the Pro is slightly better set up, bridge/action seems better/balanced, better tone, and has the active pickup you will want. Go for the 5-string in these settings as well - you get a viola cover and an octave cello cover as well as the violin - the low C string is great for blending with guitars. It takes some practice to avoid over-shoot (bowing) on the G string crossing since violinists are not used to another string below the G, but once it's practiced it will be easy. Initially finding the G string might take a moment of thought as it's between two strings - but again practice is your friend.
