About Violins

No instrument in the orchestra comes closer to mimicking the human voice than the violin. Pitch, expression, breathiness, vibrato — it’s no wonder this star string has been featured in violin concertos from red-blooded Romantics like Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky to 20th-century standouts like Bartók and Shostakovich.

If you’re a violinist, then you already know there’s never been a better time to be a player. Ultra-tight quality control and a spirit of innovation continue to make today’s violins better at performing and easier to play than ever before in history. Discover what’s around the corner for your craft when you rent or purchase a violin from Sweetwater!

Violin FAQs

What strings and accessories does my violin need?

Violin accessories fall into two categories: consumable goods and durable goods.

Consumables are the accessories you’ll go through routinely along your learning and performance journey. These might include strings (replaced every three to eight months), rosin (consumed every year or two), cleaning cloths (replaced when saturated), and products for humidity control (which may need to be regularly replenished).

Durables are longer-weathering accessories designed to improve your playing quality. These might include a case, clip-on tuner, chinrest, shoulder rest, new bow, and even the seat or chair you perform on.

Check out Sweetwater’s violin care and maintenance guide for more information on violin accessories and tips on maintaining your bow and instrument.

What do the different violin sizes mean?

Size refers to the body size of a violin, not including the neck and scroll. Sizes are often referred to in fractions of a full-size violin (4/4). It’s generally advised that students start with smaller sizes — 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, or 7/8 — before graduating to a full size. Note that this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, though, as even some professional players use smaller sizes, including renowned Dutch player Berent Korfker, who has been known to reach for his trusted 347mm (7/8) 1702 Stradivari.

How do I reduce violin squeak?

While violin squeak is common, it’s avoidable with practice. Here are some tips from our resident violin experts on reducing string squawk in your playing:

  • Keep your bow perpendicular to the fingerboard as you play.
  • Apply even pressure across the strings, using more pressure at the lighter bow tip and less pressure at the heavier frog (bottom).
  • Stabilize your bowing speed.
  • Aim for smooth bowing direction transitions.
  • Ensure your bow and bow hair are in performance condition.
  • Check that you’re not using too much or too little rosin.
