A 5-string Violin That Plays Like a Traditional 4-string Instrument

The Realist RV-5e is a no-compromise 5-string acoustic-electric violin with playability that rivals a conventional 4-string instrument. Crafted from carved Carpathian spruce, the RV-5e delivers a clear, open tone with subdued projection to safeguard against unwanted feedback in amplified situations. Speaking of which, you'll be blown away by this violin's plugged-in tone, which is well balanced across all strings, with a rich sound that's guaranteed to attract attention. The RV-5e also boasts a camouflaged volume knob, which matches the instrument's eye-catching varnished finish for a head-turning, traditional look.

Familiar feel

Although it's armed with five strings, the Realist RV-5e plays like a 4-string violin. You'll greatly appreciate the RV-5e's custom-designed bridge curvature, and its expertly arranged string spacing ensures a feel that will be familiar to traditional 4-string players. And what can you do with a 5-string violin? Well, the violinists here at Sweetwater have used the RV-5e to replicate viola passages and to double cello parts (an octave up, of course) without switching instruments.

Passive Realist pickup yields stellar plugged-in tone

When it's time to hit the stage, the RV-5e's Realist pickup really brings it. For starters, this passive pickup is well-balanced across all strings. What's more, it sounds rich, full, and natural. The RV-5e is also extremely resistant to feedback — a must-have for extra-loud applications. To top it off, the RV-5e's near-invisible volume knob in its treble-side C bout, as well as its discreet output jack, give this acoustic-electric violin an attention-grabbing traditional look.

Reviews

100% worth it!
I love this violin! I have never played a 5 string before so it took a bit for me to get used to it. I found it was in the 8-10 hour mark of playing it that something finally clicked and it wasn't such a struggle. I still find it difficult to play anything out of 1st position on the G, D and A strings without accidentally hitting other strings since they are slightly closer than normal. It sounds nice unplugged, but absolutely shines when plugged in-- I can't get enough of it!! It has a deeper resonance than a normal violin due to the C string, and I love having the extra ringing note.
If you are playing with an amp or PA system and are up for the challenge of a 5 string, I say this violin is 100% worth it!
