A High-speed 6-string Stallion

A no-nonsense take on the classic Fender Mustang, the Squier Sonic Mustang HH is teeming with alt-rock attitude! This guitar’s slightly compact offset poplar body is loaded with a pair of Squier ceramic humbuckers that deliver both raw, biting rock fury and full-range cleans. Next, the neck’s maple-on-maple construction and C shape provide a feel that strikes a balance between playing comfort and high-performance playability. Prefer an instrument with a slinky string feel? The Mustang’s classic 24-inch scale length offers a relaxed tension and reduced fret-to-fret travel distance — perfect for developing guitarists and players with a slightly smaller grip. Whether you’re after an attitude-equipped first instrument or looking for a bold new sound to add to your arsenal, the Squier Sonic Mustang HH is a short-scale powerhouse.

A classic alt-rock tonal recipe

The Sonic Mustang HH takes a turn from tradition with a hot pair of humbuckers! While this combo certainly wouldn’t be found on any old-school Mustang, the combination of a short-scale Fender-style instrument with two humbuckers arguably defined the raw, unrefined tones of the grunge and early indie-rock eras. This guitar’s dual Squier ceramic humbuckers deliver a present, in-your-face attitude that cuts right through a band to stand front and center in any mix. Prefer a cleaner tone? Sweetwater guitarists find that the Sonic Mustang HH’s neck pickup delivers deep, rich cleans to complement its aggressive dirty tones, offering the perfect sonic combo for players looking to capture “loud-quiet-loud” alt-rock style.

Low-tension 24-inch scale length

While most Fender/Squier 6-string instruments feature a 25.25-inch scale length, the Mustang clocks in at a slightly shorter 24 inches. What does that mean for you? More relaxed playability up and down the fingerboard, with a shorter distance between each fret and slinkier string tension. Make no mistake — it’s still a full-size instrument (as evidenced by the legions of alt-rock and indie players devoted to the Mustang family, including the late legendary Kurt Cobain), but it does offer a significant fingerboard advantage to a player with smaller hands or a musician looking for a snappier sound and feel.

Maple neck with a comfortable C carve

The Squier Sonic Mustang HH’s maple neck will surely please players of all styles and backgrounds, featuring a crowd-pleasing C profile. It’s more than substantial enough to accommodate any player while sporting a lightning-fast feel for fleet-fingered runs. Up top, the fingerboard features Narrow Tall frets and a modern 9.5-inch radius, providing slick, fast playability with no fret-outs.

Squier Sonic Mustang HH Features:

  • Lightweight poplar body in a highly comfortable offset body shape
  • Packed with iconic Mustang-style alt- and indie-rock flavor
  • C-shaped maple neck facilitates playing comfort for extended playing sessions
  • Maple fingerboard with a modernized 9.5-in. radius for effortless bends up and down the fingerboard
  • Dual Squier ceramic humbuckers kick out raw, in-your-face driven tones with a beautifully full-range clean response
  • Rock-solid 6-saddle top load bridge reduces string change times
  • 24-in. scale length for a slinkier feel with reduced string tension

Reviews

Love it!
Looks, sounds, and feels great! You know it's a great instrument when you want to pick it up and play every time you see it. And the Flash Pink is such a cool look. No regrets!
Music background: Semi-pro drummer, dance accompanist, budding guitarist
Bought to Mod
I picked this up because I wanted a humbucking guitar to add to the arsenal. I have a tele and a nashville tele and it was time to add one more guitar for some versatility. I primarily play rhythm electric with some light lead lines if I'm playing and it is for worship music. At this price, I knew I could afford to put a bit of money into it if I needed to.

THE GOOD:
The color got me. The price point got me (can't beat it). I was really happy with the action and finish when this came in. The neck is a dream to play. I had no imperfections as far as finishings go on this. It was play-ready out of the box. I play a Fender Mustang short-scale bass but this was my first short scale guitar.

THE NOT SO GOOD:
The stock strings were trash. That is pretty par for the course, in my experience. I thought they were too slinky for the short scale and I currently have mine in the shop for some mods. The tuning stability with the stock tuners is not good at all, particularly given the strings. To be fair, I didn't play it with heavier gauges so I can't speak to the improvement of that. I ended up getting a pair of locking hipshot tuners and I'm confident those will help. The pick ups on this aren't as bad as other reviewers have mentioned. This would be a really solid first guitar or back up. I found them to be fairly full-bodied and moderately responsive, they just didn't have the articulation that I want in an instrument.

THE VERDICT:
I found a pair of Lambertone Grinders for a good price and I'm confident that swap along with the locking tuners and thicker string gauge will make this thing RIP. I went in eyes wide open and I haven't been disappointed, even with everything stock. Wanting a fun instrument to play that'll stand out? Buy it. Looking for a solid first instrument for someone to grow with? Buy it. As a female, this pink made me feel super happy because let's be honest, there aren't many of us in the electric guitar world. :) If you're looking for a mod-able instrument that won't break the bank but has decent components and a playable neck from the gate, PULL THE TRIGGER. You won't be disappointed.

Great Starter!
Picked this up for my 12 year old daughter who has recently taken an interest in music. I am quite impressed by how decent this little thing was right out of the box. Intonation is great, frets feel good, fit and finish are top notch for the price. Only complaint was the bridge was a little buzzy at times but after some adjustments that was fixed. My daughter hasn't put it down since we got it and it's honestly quite the little ripper.

I wish my first guitar was this good, if you're looking for a great jumping off point for a new player then look no further.
Music background: Punk Rock Dad
no brainer
Needed minor setup but after that plays great sounds great. Excellent pickups . This guitar is giggable
Good but needs a lot of modification
This guitar is good but needs a lot of modification. I play 13 gauge strings and the nut does not fit the strings so you will need to get a new nut if you play bigger gauges. The tuners are subpar best and will need to be replaced. The pick ups are muddy and need to be replaced. There are also imperfections on the back of the neck, which will need a professional polisher.

If you're looking for a guitar to modify, this would be a good choice. If you're looking for something that you can play out of the box look elsewhere Because the modifications needed will end up costing more than the guitar itself.
