A High-speed 6-string Stallion

A no-nonsense take on the classic Fender Mustang, the Squier Sonic Mustang is teeming with alt-rock attitude! This guitar’s slightly compact offset poplar body is loaded with a pair of Squier ceramic single-coil pickups, producing bell-like cleans and an aggressive snarl when you stomp on your favorite distortion pedal. Next, the neck’s maple-on-maple construction and C shape deliver a feel that strikes a balance between playing comfort and high-performance playability. Prefer an instrument with a slinky string feel? The Mustang’s classic 24-inch scale length offers a relaxed tension and reduced fret-to-fret travel distance — perfect for developing guitarists and players with a slightly smaller grip. Whether you’re after an attitude-equipped first instrument or looking for a bold new sound to add to your arsenal, the Squier Sonic Mustang is a short-scale powerhouse.

Dual Mustang-style ceramic pickups for single-coil sparkle

Like the original Fender Mustang, the Squier Sonic Mustang comes equipped with clear-as-a-bell single-coil pickups. However, unlike the original, this Mustang lives up to its high-speed designation with a hot ceramic magnet design! This results in a pickup that seamlessly merges the clear character of the classic Mustang-style single-coil with a raw, biting response when pushed into dirtier territory. What’s more, Sweetwater’s die-hard short-scale aficionados love how Mustang-style single-coil pickups tend to retain a sonically neutral character that perfectly pairs with pedal-heavy rigs.

Low-tension 24-inch scale length

While most Fender/Squier 6-string instruments feature a 25.25-inch scale length, the Mustang clocks in at a slightly shorter 24 inches. What does that mean for you? More relaxed playability up and down the fingerboard, with a shorter distance between each fret and slinkier string tension. Make no mistake — it’s still a full-size instrument (as evidenced by the legions of alt-rock and indie players devoted to the Mustang family, including the late legendary Kurt Cobain), but it does offer a significant fingerboard advantage to a player with smaller hands or a musician looking for a snappier sound and feel.

Maple neck with a comfortable C carve

The Squier Sonic Mustang’s maple neck will surely please players of all styles and backgrounds, featuring a crowd-pleasing C profile. It’s more than substantial enough to accommodate any player while sporting a lightning-fast feel for fleet-fingered runs. Up top, the fingerboard features Narrow Tall frets and a modern 9.5-inch radius, providing slick, fast playability with no fret-outs.

Squier Sonic Mustang Features:

  • Lightweight poplar body in a highly comfortable offset body shape
  • Packed with iconic Mustang-style alt- and indie-rock flavor
  • C-shape maple neck ensures comfort throughout extended playing sessions
  • Matching maple fingerboard with a modernized 9.5-in. radius for effortless bends up and down the fingerboard
  • Dual Squier ceramic single-coil pickups produce a clear, defined tone that transforms into an aggressive bite when you kick on the distortion pedal
  • Rock-solid 6-saddle top load bridge reduces string change times
  • 24-in. scale length for a slightly slinky feel with reduced string tension

Reviews

Way better than expected
I wouldn't usually review a mod or beginner guitar but… This is a really cool guitar. It has far more pros than cons. I bought it to mod, gut it change everything. I got a JB jr and alnico strat neck pickup for it. I haven't been able to bring myself to change these pickups they sound great. I think fender made the bridge pickup to sound like the Cobain mustang cause it does Nirvana spot on. The neck pickup is nice too clean it pulls off Hendrix well. They sound super hot but they are not must be the ceramic idk. Great tone tho. Neck and frets are excellent. The tuners are typical cheap Squire but unlike most they hold tune fairly well. Switch, pots and jack are junk and need upgrade. I'll replace the saddles they work fine but can be better. Now the Bad the body is crazy thin almost toy like. I don't really notice too much while playing it but looking at it it's very noticeable it's 1 1/4" thick. I really got it to try out the 24" scale length to see how I feel about it and I dig it. If you have wrist or hand discomfort it helps. The strings are easily pressed down and you don't have to reach as far. I changed the pick guard and stained the neck a bit… it was super white. A set of 10s feels much better than 9s. Overall really coo little guitar especially for beginners and moders that don't mind the thin body. For myself it will give me the itch for the Fender player model full thickness and string thru body. Good stuff
Music background: Little bit of everything recording, gigs and such.
