Twice the EQ — Half the Coloration!

Manley's Massive Passive is an equalization monster. You can expect the best strengths of Pultec-style equalizers as well as choice console, parametric, and graphic EQs — all the radical shaping you'll need for the most demanding of sessions as well as the delicate, subtle shadings needed for vocals and mastering. The 2-channel, 4-band Massive Passive features a passive tone-shaping portion of the equalizer design and uses only the best components, for its ultimately huge, high-headroom performance. Offering incredible sculpting abilities, without all the coloration, the Massive Passive may well be your last equalizer.

Premium design with passive components

As you can expect from Manley, no corners were cut with the design of the Massive Passive, and there's no unnecessarily complicated circuit — Massive Passive features basic passive components and uses only metal film resistors, film capacitors, and hand-wound inductors to sculpt the sound. And thanks to its more natural design, you can expect more natural, organic tone.

2-channel, 4-band EQ for everything from the radical to the subtle

The Massive Passive equalizer excels at everything from the drastic shaping needed for tracking to the most subtle of shadings needed for affecting vocal tracks or the whole mix. Although different in nature, its 2-channel, 4-band design offers a tremendous amount of sonic sculpting, incorporating the best strengths of Pultecs, choice console EQs, graphic equalizers, and parametric equalizers — but it doesn't throw color all over the audio. Get creative with it, or get logical and surgical with it — the Manley Massive Passive is ready to make the most of whatever you toss its way.

Five steep highpass filters and four steep lowpass filters

The Manley Massive Passive is packed with five highpass filters and four lowpass filters, and you can bypass either or both. The filters are steep, so you can pull out the junk without touching the real music. It's also great-sounding when combined with other bands. Ultimately, Manley went for "what's useful" when designing the Massive Passive, not "what's standard" — it's a welcome design departure that produces seriously massive results.

Massive Passive is sublime

I've been using the UAD2 version of the MP for many years regarding this iconic EQ, so I thought I'd have a sense of the unit from inception. In reality it's far more sensitive to smaller boosts and cuts than the plugin, not to mention soooooo much wider and warmer. UA did wonders honestly, but the extra 10-15% is well worth the asking price. This is not an EQ you really notice, it's just so smooth and musical that everything seems right. It took me a while to wrap my head around the boosts and cuts accepting large increases and decreases, it's crazy. This is an eq that you shouldn't use theory on, it's more using your ear and trusting it.
This is an exceptional product, a Pultec with so much more....Great job Manley, this accompanies my Nu Mu now( a killer combo FYI )

Not Just For the Studio

I bought the latest version of Massive Passive to EQ my home stereo comprised of Esoteric, BAT, and Pass Labs electronics, and custom speakers with Purify 6.5" mid-woofers and matching passive radiators. The drivers come from Bruno Putzeys' "other" company: Putzeys designs both for Manley and Purify. With Massive Passive, the small, long-throw drivers wake up with dynamic and authoritative bass down to 25hz. The Manley adds a bit of tube warmth, but cleanly and quietly, as one expects from a great studio piece. In the home setting it is reminiscent of Marc Levinson's Cello Audio Palette, but a step or two ahead the Palette in terms of eliminating op amps from the analog domain.

Manley Massive Passive (My Secret Weapon)

Anything that could be said about the Manley Massive Passive Stereo Tube EQ has already been said. After living with mine for several months, I am simply here to tell you that I am a believer. I put mine on the master buss, tweaked it to taste, and haven't touched it since. It just works on everything. Please do not get me wrong, I have read the manual -which is an easy read- and watched several video tutorials. I also have played my music through my Manley Massive Passive, and intimately listened to each frequency band to learn the differences that they make etc... I needed to know that I was not making a poor investment decision. If you love your Music, don't trust your Music with anything less than the Best. Additionally, if you're reading this post on Sweetwater, you are already among the best in the business.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Jeffrey Green

My experience with the Massive Passive has been rewarding in that my mixes are musically transformed as if the elements are tied together in very much the same way a half-inch analog two-track or very nice stereo bus compressor does. It is not "effecty", however, but it does exhibit strong vintage character. It is smooth and musical in it's operation and works wonders on elements that are difficult to equalize such as vocals. If you are considering an EQ that exhibits qualities such as I have described, then look no further - the competition simply does not exist in either hardware or plug-in form.
