MKE 600: Your Ticket to Pro Production Sound

Sennheiser's short shotguns have been fixtures on location and soundstages worldwide for decades, and they know a thing or two about production audio. The Sennheiser MKE 600 is a versatile supercardioid short shotgun mic that lets you boom or camera mount, as the shot dictates. Get into tight spaces on the set, and if a shot (or an entire production) calls for a camera-mounted mic, you can still capture the same world-class audio with the Sennheiser MKE 600.

A welcome audio upgrade from built-in camera mics

With a frequency response emphasized for speech, the MKE 600 is production ready without the need to tamper with external EQ and cleanup. Sennheiser incorporated a base 40Hz low-cut filter that can be toggled to 100Hz to ensure vocal intelligibility. Combined with the MKE 600’s windscreen, which attenuates unwanted noise by up to 25dB, your takes will no longer be ruined by intrusive low rumbles.

Perfect for camera mounting as well as booming

Due to its short size, the Sennheiser MKE 600 has the agility to get into tight production spaces and capture first-class pro audio. Boomed or camera mounted, the MKE 600 will become your versatile go-to production mic.

Off-axis sound is attenuated without colorations

The KE 600 effectively attenuates off-axis sound without coloring your audio. Even after the director calls "Action," production sets are noisy affairs — especially on location. Unless you're Spielberg and can suspend air traffic for a shot, as a production mixer, you've got a fair amount of ambient environmental noise to contend with. The supercardioid/lobar polar pattern found in Sennheiser’s MKE 600 will capture a focused signal from even the most unpredictable environments. This shotgun mic is more than worthy of its praise. Once you record with the MKE 600, you'll have a new best friend on set.

Exceptionally low inherent self-noise gives you crystal-clear production audio

Ultra clean dialog — that's what you'll get with the Sennheiser MKE 600. Sennheiser short shotguns are an industry standard for a reason — and they just keep getting better! The MKE 600 serves up crystal-clear dialog, sound effects, ADR, Foley — whatever you're capturing, you couldn't make a better short shotgun mic choice than the MKE 600.

Battery or phantom power allows for ultimate portability

One thing that makes the MKE 600 so appealing is its standardized 3-pin XLR output compatibility, making the microphone ultra-portable for any scenario. Connect to nearly any handheld recorder, camcorder, field recorder, or cinematic camera with ease. Even if your device doesn’t provide phantom power, Sennheiser’s MKE 600 lasts up to 150 hours battery powered — only one AA battery needed — and it has a dedicated on/off switch to avoid drainage.

Sennheiser MKE 600 Supercardioid Short Shotgun Mic Features:

  • Pronounced directivity
  • Maximal rejection of side noise
  • Switchable low-cut filter minimizes wind noise
  • Battery switch with "Low Batt" indicator
  • Rugged all-metal housing
  • Very good suppression of structure-borne noise
  • Supplied with foam windshield and shock mount
  • Requires +48V phantom power or battery power

Decent Mic For the Price
I did a shootout between this mic and the Audio Technica AT897. This mic beat the latter to me. There are a couple of issues with the mic, but if you know about them, you can avoid the problems. As far as the pickup goes at a distance, i felt the mic did VERY well. In my video review, we went outside on a NOISY street and tested in 3 foot increments (from 3' to 15') The MKE600 was still clear at 15 feet outdoors. Not so much on the AT897.
A drawback to this (and other sennheiser mics as you can see in the video) is that it suffers from a ground issue that the AT897 didn't. If you are using a camera with a polarized but not grounded power source, there is significant hum/buzz. Running off battery power (on the camera, i didn't test with internal AA battery), you'll be fine as far as the noise goes. The MKE200 suffers from this same issue.

Solid Choice for Voice Acting
This mic was bought as an alternative and first step up to the more costly MKH 416. I was hesitant to purchase at first because of the wide spread in cost between the two. I was concerned that this mic would not perform at a professional level and may not have the noise rejection or clean tone needed for voice work.
It has been a solid choice for both audiobook narration and commercial VO work.
The mic is very quiet with no discernible onboard noise. It rejects noise from the side and rear very well.
Many reviews noted it is a bit darker the the 416, but for me this has worked well. I don't see it being too warm. I don't notice any muddiness; it records with a clean, natural representation of my voice.
I don't use the battery option for phantom power. Instead I rely on the phantom power provided by my interface. I recommend an interface with a solid preamp. Obviously lesser quality preamps are going to impact your potential for quality sound from the mic.
If you are looking for a budget minded shotgun option to use in your vocal booth, I recommend giving the MKE600 a try.
Music background: Gigging bassist, singer, voice actor
It's an excellent mic!
Because of my budget, I was debating between this mic and the Sennheiser MKH 416. I ended up going with the MKE 600, and I have zero regrets.

The mic is EXCELLENT, and I love that it can be powered with a AA battery. That means I don't have to drain my camera or recorder by using phantom power.

Also, a big shoutout to Sweetwater and Brady Langefels for their time and generosity. If you're unsure about a purchase, don't hesitate to reach out to him — he's dedicated, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
