This Legendary Mic Gets a Facelift

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? That’s the approach Beyerdynamic has taken with its revered M 88 dynamic microphone ever since 1963. The revered mic has recently received a few new cosmetic changes though, including a new microphone grille, new printing, and a new “Made in Germany” heritage band. Everything inside, however, is the same as it’s always been. You’ll get the same 30Hz to 20kHz frequency response, the same hypercardioid polar pattern with superb directionality, the same hostaphan diaphragm with fantastic impulse response … in short, the same classic sound that you’ve heard on thousands of songs for more than half a century.

Not just for vocals

The Beyerdynamic M 88 often gets billed as a “vocal microphone.” Of course, it’s true that the M 88 definitely sounds amazing on vocals — after all, it’s been Phil Collins’s mic of choice for decades. However, Sweetwater studio engineers will be the first to tell you that the M 88 also sounds stellar on snare drums, kick drums, horns, and basically anything that could benefit from its wide frequency response, excellent off-axis rejection, high SPL handling, and super-sensitive transient response courtesy of its hostaphan diaphragm.

Beyerdynamic: quality you can count on

Beyerdynamic microphones are held in high esteem at Sweetwater due to the company's unwavering commitment to excellence since its founding in 1924. The M 88 — like all Beyerdynamic products — is designed and crafted in Germany to the most stringent engineering standards, using only the highest-quality materials. Experience the Beyerdynamic difference: add an M 88 to your mic locker today!

Beyerdynamic M 88 Dynamic Microphone Features:

  • Renowned dynamic microphone with a new look but the same classic sound
  • Hypercardioid polar pattern for optimal directionality and off-axis rejection
  • Wide 30Hz–20kHz frequency response and high SPL handling make it applicable on a range of sound sources, including vocals, kick drums, snare drums, saxophones, speech for podcasts, and much more
  • Highly sensitive hostaphan diaphragm has superb transient response
  • High-power output requires less amplification than many other dynamic mics
  • Handmade in Heilbronn, Germany

Reviews

Beyerdynamic M-88
As a Professional Musician this is the best Mic I have ever sung on. Pure my magic for my range, and a sound man's dream to dial me in. I've tried different types over the years, and this beats all hands down. Thank you, Sam,
Music background: 1968 to present
I don't know why they changed it?
Right now, I own one of the new M88's and 7 TG88's. It's been my vocal mic for over thirty years. I started out with the silver windscreen M88 30 years ago and about 10 years ago started buying the TG (Tour Grade) versions. I checked out the new M88 vs the older TG88. The new one sounds a little thinner and has a 2K bump in it. I personally like the TG version better.

In any case these are very versatile and no matter what's the task they handle it with ease. The only thing I didn't do with the new M88 is use it playing out live with the band. Just thought I would give my preliminary thoughts now.

I can't believe I'm the first to right about this great mic!
When i was going to an audio engineering school they had 1 of these bad boys there. My teacher talked about it and what he said really made me want to try this mic. When I got my chance man I was blown a way! On guitar cabs this thing is amazing! I say this should be the go to mic for hard rock and heavy metal guitar. Told my friend a about it and he tried it on his 15 watt Marshall MG, it almost sounded just like a full stack no joke! I'm also going to give out a secret that I hope doesn't get any body mad but I love this mic so much and I want people to pick it up. So here it is, throw this Bad mother trucker in side of a kick drum and never look back it will blow you away!

Great bass mic
I am a bass singer for a southern gospel quartet. I was looking for a mic that had good bass response and could get a lot of gain before feed back. This mic does just that! When you need punch in volume to stay up with the other singers you have it. When you need great response through a subwoofer it delivers. Sweetwater is a great company to deal with.

step up...it's show time!!!
I bought this mic at the recommendation of my Rep. at sweetwater mr. wayne davis. as usual he knew what would work for me.

i'am a 64 yr old harmonica player who has only been playing for about 4 years.my old mic was a shure that was made in 1968.

I've played 2 shows with the mic and i'am totally blown away by it's performance.you can get right up on it and blow your brains out with no feedback.i'am very impressed.the sound is incredible.

the only negative thing i have to say is that you can't get lazy when playing this mic...your mistakes become alot more evident...so every time i step up....even at home "it's show time"...it's making me a better musician.
