A Cutting-edge Les Paul for the Contemporary Guitarist

Lightweight, versatile, and decked out with a plethora of performance-minded enhancements, Gibson’s Les Paul Modern Figured is a Les Paul for the 21st century. From the chambered mahogany body to the mahogany SlimTaper neck’s Modern Contoured Heel to the 12–16-inch ebony fingerboard, the Les Paul Modern Figured melds the Les Paul’s vintage roots with contemporary playability features. What about the tone? Beneath this guitar’s attention-demanding AAA figured maple top lies a pair of Burstbucker Pro humbuckers — pickups that supercharge the time-tested PAF formula with a high-output attitude and versatile split-coil, out-of-phase, and pure bypass switching options. You also get superbly stable Grover Locking Rotomatic tuners and a classic aluminum Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge. Take the future of the Les Paul into your own hands with Gibson’s Les Paul Modern Figured.

Burstbucker Pro: a modern spin on classic PAF sonics

Gibson’s Burstbucker pickups rest firmly in Sweetwater’s pickup pantheon as a top-tier PAF, but what if you’re after more power than a vintage-style humbucker can provide? Enter the Burstbucker Pro, a fatter, more powerful spin on time-tested PAF sonics. Burstbucker Pro pickups deliver all the classic characteristics of a top-notch PAF — exceptional clarity, a remarkably dynamic feel, and ample vintage-accurate warmth — but swaps out the lower-output Alnico II magnets for Alnico V. This results in a more aggressive attack and enhanced low-end response. Moreover, Burstbucker Pro pickups feature wax potting to cut down on hum and squeal. For the player seeking a vintage-style PAF that’s not afraid to venture into higher-gain territory, you’d be hard-pressed to beat Gibson’s Burstbucker Pro humbuckers.

SlimTaper neck and Plek’d frets

Comfort and playability were Gibson’s primary concerns when designing the Les Paul Modern Figured. You’ll be delighted by how this guitar’s SlimTaper neck profile comfortably fits your hand just the right way. For your playing pleasure, the ebony fingerboard is buffed to silky smoothness and bound with rolled edges so that no fret ends impede your dexterity. The frets are dressed to perfection using a Plek Pro machine for optimized playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you’ll likely own.

Myriad modern features

What’s so modern about the Les Paul Modern? At first glance, this guitar largely falls well within the confines of the time-tested Les Paul formula. However, peak under this guitar’s hood, and you’ll be rewarded with performance-minded features that elevate this instrument to hitherto unheard-of levels of’ Paul playability. The Les Paul Modern’s most significant deviation from the vintage Les Paul mold lies in its contoured neck heel, granting you unencumbered access to all 22 frets. Flip the neck over to be rewarded with a glassy ebony fingerboard carved into a compound 12–16-inch radius — a subtle but immensely powerful spec that provides a classic Gibson feel on the low frets with a flatter, shred-ready feel as you climb up the neck. It’s all finished off with Grover Locking Rotomatic tuners to facilitate speedy string changes and maximize tuning stability.

Gibson Les Paul Modern Figured Electric Guitar Features:

  • A modern reimagining of the iconic Les Paul formula
  • Premium AAA figured maple top beams with gorgeous grain, while also imparting a touch of high-end bite to your tone
  • Ultra-lightweight chambered mahogany body
  • Fast-playing mahogany SlimTaper neck paired with a Modern Contoured Heel for limitless upper-fret access
  • 12–16-inch compound-radius ebony fingerboard supplies classic Gibson playability in the chording position and shred-ready performance up high
  • Gibson Burstbucker Pro pickups provide higher output and more authoritative tonal spin on classic PAF-style sonics
  • Extensive switching options accessed via the push-pull knobs, including singing split-coil tones, quacky out-of-phase sounds, and a Pure Bypass function that sends your signal straight to the output jack
  • Grover Locking Rotomatic Tuners for easy string changes and superior tuning stability
  • Time-tested Aluminum Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece
  • Sleek nitrocellulose finish will gracefully age and develop over time

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Unbeatable
I held off on this guitar for a while and tried to talk myself out of it. I tend to stick with lower priced instruments such as a Les Paul Studio for the simple fact that guitars get nicked, scratched and worn if played correctly. The high price tag was almost enough to keep me away but that red had me hooked from the moment I saw it. Thanks to Sweetwater's unbeatable detailed pictures I picked the exact top that caught my eye along with the weight that I prefer. Opening the case for the first time left me speechless. This is one of the most beautiful Les Paul's I've laid my eyes on. Quality control was spot on with this particular guitar. Everything appeared to be perfect...with one exception. This thing squealed like a distressed pig when introduced to the high gain channel on my MT100 amp. Even 15ft away from the amp with my back turned to it. One of Sweetwater's guitar techs diagnosed it as a case of microphonic pickups. He contacted Gibson and had them ship new pickups directly to me. Thanks to the Modern models quick connection heads on the pickup leads, I had the new pickups installed in under 10 minutes. Problem solved! Ive owned almost every guitar imaginable and while the Les Paul isn't perfect, it's still the one and only. Unbeatable! P.S Not a fan of the clear knobs, replaced with black top hats.

Fantastic Les Paul. It looks and sounds much better with some adjustments and changes.
At its core, this is a Les Paul with great bones; a full thickness LP with a figured top, ebony fingerboard, real MOP inlays, body and neck binding, Burst Buckers, and some nice locking tuners. The neck is an effortless slim taper, similar to a 60s carve and very comfortable. The compound radius feels natural and makes it easy to get a great setup. The heel carve makes upper fret access easy and comfortable, and no-one even knows it's there while you're performing. The coil splits and switching are versatile, but needed some pickup adjustments to sound proper.

Personally, the looks out of the box didn't do it for me. I immediately replaced the clear knobs with reflectors, drilled it for the pick guard, and put the poker chip on. I prefer it like this. Mine weighs about 7.5 lbs, and at that weight it was ever so slightly neck heavy with the locking tuners on it. I replaced them with Klusons and I now have a completely balanced 7.3 lb full sized LP. Insane.

It has coil taps, phase reverse (for the neck pickup), and a pull-bypass that routes the bridge pickup straight to the jack. So; fancy electronics that you don't need for the guitar to sound good. But they're there. Out of the box, I didn't care for the coil splits. But once I adjusted the height and pole pieces, the guitar started sounding *really* good. I initially planned on ripping it all out for traditional electronics and non-potted PAFs. But after some adjustment, I'm keeping it as-is. This is a GREAT sounding guitar that does a lot of stellar sounds, and could be the only guitar you need all night. Some of the coil split tones will get you into single coil Fender territory, but it still roars just like a Les Paul should and gets that airy snap you want from clean PAFs. Note that it's voiced bright, so for fat LP tones, roll the tone knobs back a few clicks and it sits right in where it should. That extra clarity is there if you need some single coil tones, but easily defeated when not wanted. This guitar stands in for my Tele and Strat, and does everything my LP Standard does, while weighing 2 lbs less and feeling a bit more upscale (ebony, MOP, AAA top).

The nut on mine wasn't cut well, causing some intonation issues, where the treble strings were fretting sharp on the first few frets and the G string saddle wouldn't adjust far enough to intonate. Sweetwater paid for my local luthier to fix this, which was just some adjustment to the slots. The rest of the guitar was flawless, but I'm taking a star off the rating as both Gibson and Sweetwater should've picked up on that in QC. This is not a cheap guitar to come with that sort of oversight.

Overall; I wanted the weight and comfort of this guitar, but didn't care about the fancy electronics, and bought it knowing I would change the looks a bit. The end result is an awesome Les Paul that sounds, plays, feels, and looks great. I'm pretty traditional with instruments, as many guitar players are. And this guitar can easily be something that looks the part, but has some tricks under the hood which are essentially invisible to a casual observer. I like that about it. Highly recommended.

Meet "Scarlett"
My salesman Alden Debee had a lot of patience with me on this one. I own a Gibson LP Trad..love it! Wanted to get a "spankier" P90-ish sound with coil tapping. Bought a different very popular other brand.
Tried to like it..but ended up returning it.

Result...I discovered that I am a "Les Paul" guy. I kept researching, looking, and trying to decide on a second guitar. When I saw this... omg, locking tuners, AAA gorgeous top, ebony fingerboard, coil tapping, phase, bypass !!!!. I worried the weight relief..
Music background: Active with current band Mirage for 8 years, classic rock. Been playing 40+ years. Rig- Mesa Boogie Mark V, Morley Wah/Vol, TC20 analog delay, EH Soulfood boost, Clean Boost. Scarlett sounds incredible.

Great guitar
What can I say, it's a gibson les paul with modern features. Pickup's are incredible and provide great tone. Sustain is incredible. Neck is sleek for a les paul and allows fast play. A little heavier feel but that is to be expected so recommend a wider strap. It has the infamous G string that all les pauls have that tends to go out of tune a little quicker. I also bend the G a lot. Read that changing the nut helps but overall I can't complain. holds tune. hard to put this thing down. I play it every day

The lower fret access makes all the differance.
After spending a few hours running through different amps both real (Various Mark and Recto) And Neurological amp sims (Pettrucionsim and Raba Mac). I was highly impressed with how much faster the neck played compared to a standard. The ebony fretboard felt amazing and the burstbuckers handled everything from mild to wild with ease. Only negatives would be that the knobs react too quickly and that the frets extend out over the binding. the fret board is not like it should be but more like an Epiphone. Not sure why Gibson failed at this one obvious issue. Otherwise it looks stuning and plays fantastic. Definately a step up from a standard offering. Also Sweetwaters great customer service, fast shipping and free candy made my experiance exceptional.
