A Jazzmaster with the Roar of a Dinosaur

Squier's J Mascis Jazzmaster pays homage to the indie-rocking, distortion-loving axeman behind Dinosaur Jr. This offset-waisted vintage white beauty sports a gold anodized pickguard for a touch of vintage flash. Onboard the J Mascis Jazzmaster (JMJM), you'll find specs requested by J himself — an Adjusto-Matic bridge, vintage styling, and a smooth-playing satin-finished neck, to name a few. Beyond that, you'll find a duo of full-toned single-coil pickups plus the Jazzmaster's famous flexible tone controls. All in all, you'll be ready to make some noise with the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster.

A guitar fit for a noise-rock king

You'll be supremely psyched to have the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster in your hands — many guitarists at Sweetwater certainly are. This Squier pays tribute to the alt/indie rock founding father, J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. Mascis certainly took the instrument to a new place with his feedback-drenched, distortion-laden rocking. And this new signature model pays affectionately ear-splitting homage to Mascis, giving the instrument a modern makeover for fans who've been clamoring for such a model.

Hardware and pickups specified by J Mascis

With its vintage-inspired vintage white finish, '60s headstock, and gold anodized pickguard, the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster features the cosmetics, pickups, and hardware specified by Mascis himself. Such cool mods include an Adjusto-Matic bridge, a slightly wider nut width, and a satin neck. The Dinosaur roar comes from dual single-coil pickups with punchy midrange emphasis, and the barrage of controls the Jazzmaster has always been known for — a lead circuit with 3-position toggle switch and volume/tone knobs, plus a rhythm circuit with separate volume/tone controls.

Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Created in collaboration with Dinosaur Jr. guitarist J Mascis
  • C-shaped maple neck with silky-smooth satin finish
  • 21 jumbo frets
  • 2 punchy single-coil pickups (neck and bridge)
  • Pickup switching with a 3-position toggle
  • 2-position rhythm/lead circuit selector (up for lead tone circuit or down for rhythm tone circuit)
  • Adjusto-Matic bridge with vintage-style floating tremolo
  • Vintage-style tuning machines

Absolutely amazing for the price.
I own an American Ultra tele and a MIM Strat so I am pretty familiar with Fender guitars from different price points. I wanted a Jazzmaster but my budget put me in Squier territory. After doing research it seems like the J Mascis is the one to get. I have to say overall the built quality and attention to detail is phenomenal. The guitar looks awesome in person. I have been playing it non-stop for two days getting my Helix tones dialed into it. This guitar was completely ready to play out of the box, there is nothing you need to upgrade.

Cons - The bottom pickup selector feels a little cheap and the frets could use some polishing.

Playing - This plays great, it's no $2000 guitar but it feels great in the hands. I think the neck is overblown by other people's reviews, but I think it is very, very good. If you are wanting a Jazzmaster in the price point this is it.

Holy Jazzmaster!
I'm a longtime pro musician, producer, and songwriter, and I need a lot of tonal choices when it comes to instruments (guitar and bass especially).
I have the major food groups; a couple of great Strats, a fantastic Japanese Tele, awesome Les Paul, along with various others (PRS, Reverend Electric 12 string, a good old Danelectro, and several acoustic guitars and bass, etc.).

One tone I was missing was that of a Jazzmaster. I could 'kind of' replicate that sound, but there's nothing like the real thing.

I started researching which particular flavor of Jazzmaster I should get. I kept seeing great reviews of the Squier J Mascis, but at that low price I thought it was too good to be true.

I called up my SW rep, Matt Zuleger, and he confirmed that it would be a great choice (Matt is the best, BTW). I did have the plastic nut swapped out for a bone one, and grabbed a gig bag.

The guitar arrived late last week and it's fantastic! The setup was immaculate and the guitar sounds awesome. I've already used it on a couple of sessions and TV adverts.

Excellent Guitar
I just got my J Mascis Squier Jazzmaster today, and I'm already in love with it. I had a Sweetwater gift certificate, so I used it for this guitar. I also had Sweetwater install a bone nut. The guitar is rock solid, very well made and sounds absolutely amazing. The neck profile is perfect and the guitar practically plays itself. I could go on and on, but I'll just say that Squier hit it out of the ballpark with this guitar. A special thanks to Mark Magdich for his help with this purchase.

I did a video review and unboxing on my YouTube channel
The video is over an hour long and is a virtual experience from opening the box to deciding to keep it. I liked this guitar and am keeping it! I bought this guitar from Sweetwater and my sales rep is Ryan Gregory who always does a good job for me. Thanks again. My YouTube channel is @royfella or SUPER BURL BOY ROY.

Home run!
Sweetwater never disappoints! Ordered this guitar and was handled as if I had spent $5000. Incredible customer service and and quality control. Was kept updated as instrument made its way through the Sweetwater system from initial order to 55 point inspection at which point I was emailed pics of my guitar from all angles and on to shipping. Guitar arrived and was packaged very securely with Fender box inside a shipping box filled with foam padding and bubble wrap the packaging is a smart move on their part as it saves the hassle of shipping damage and subsequent returns and replacement. I recently had ordered a guitar from another prominent online instrument and what I received was basically shoved into a box with some bubble wrap no factory packaging, paper work and case candy it was full of finger prints and dust it was obviously a demo being passed off as new needless to say it went back. Nick my sales engineer kept me up to date and informed GREAT JOB! The guitar an absolute gem it plays well beyond its price point and the fit and finish was beyond excellent. The pickups have a nice bite when you want but can be subtle and expressive as well. I would highly recommend this "budget" guitar because the only thing budget about it is the price. Thanks to the team at Sweetwater for your care and commitment to excellence.
