A Modernistic Gibson Is Reborn

Own an iconic rock guitar, and a piece of Gibson history, with the Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird V VOS solidbody electric guitar. Complete with authentic contours, dimensions, and construction methods, this Firebird will instantly transport you to a time of hot-rodded cars and musical revolution. The mahogany/walnut neck delivers true vintage feel with its authentic '63 Medium C profile. And a pair of Firebird Alnico V pickups, with hand-wired CTS electronics and a Switchcraft three-way selector, deliver definitive classic rock tone. With every detail accounted for, the Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird V VOS may be the closest you'll ever get to playing a true '60s original.

Own a 6-string legend

The Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird V VOS is a modern re-creation of (what was considered) a radical design in the early 1960s. Created by legendary automotive designer (and visionary) Ray Dietrich, the original 1963 Firebirds literally reversed conventional concepts for guitar bodies and headstocks. You can bet heads turned when any guitar player took to the stage with one of these unusual instruments strapped on. Today, the Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird V VOS gives you the best this model has to offer.

You'll be in good company, playing a Firebird

The Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird V VOS springs from a distinguished lineage. Players like Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, and Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) found the Firebird's combination of looks and sound to be perfect for their needs (though, of course, Clapton played many Gibsons through the years). Keith Richards and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Stephen Stills, and Tom Petty have also been seen wielding a Firebird. You'll be in good company, playing the Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird V VOS.

So much fun

I didn't know a lot about Firebirds other than they looked great before I got one. This is the most expensive guitar I've ever bought. Here's what I've learned. This guitar is a lot of fun to pick up and play. It has a neck like a SG as the body connects near the 19th fret. The inlay markers and side dots take on a new level of importance as using the body as a reference, especially if you are used to playing a Les Paul will have you playing too high on the neck. The banjo tuners are a trip. They do add some weight to the neck, but I really just love looking at them. The pickups are bright and give this guitar a different, unique sound. The vibrato is a bit stiff but was as expected. The biggest issue I have is the controls are not intuitive. The bridge volume is swapped with the neck tone as compared to a Les Paul. And the cable is so close to the bridge volume that you can't fit a finger between the knob and the cable. It just forces you to interact with the guitar a bit different than I'm used to. This guitar is intended to be a replica and it delivers. The quality is top notch. If I were updating this guitar but wanted it to sound and look essentially the same, I'd just update the control layout and move the cable input a bit. I might also update the Vibrola, but it does have its charm. This guitar is so different and distinctive, I can't not love it. I am very happy with the purchase.
