Behringer's Classic Analog Monosynth

It's all there. Three punchy oscillators, classic 24dB/octave voltage-controlled filter with resonance, envelopes, LFO, portamento, the works. All instantly familiar — only smaller. The Behringer D is a Eurorack-sized reincarnation of the legendary analog monosynth that started it all. From fat pulsing basses to searing leads to celestial pads: the Behringer D puts a world of musical expression under your fingertips. Throw a patch from the Main Out to the Ext In, crank the Ext In Volume until you hit overdrive, play a note, and twist the filter cutoff. Isn't life sweet? Sweetwater synth mavens are savoring the Behringer D. You will, too.

A universe of sonic possibilities

The fat, punchy sound of the D is bolstered by Behringer's addition of an overdrive circuit you can patch in and control via the Ext In jack and volume pot in the Mixer section. But analog synthesis is not always about blistering leads and belching basses. This synth is also capable of eerily accurate simulations of acoustic instruments such as woodwinds, brass, and strings. The Behringer D's classic VCF — a vital component of subtractive synthesis — is the soul of this synth. Behringer has done an outstanding job here: the D's filter sounds amazing — smooth and musical, with a nice bite when you dial in a bit of resonance. From aggressive to serene, the Behringer D deploys a universe of sonic possibilities.

A little jewel of a synth

Let us be blunt: the Behringer D rocks sexy visuals. Accented with wooden end cheeks, its petite, Eurorack-sized chassis sports old-school synth knobularity that's hard to keep your hands off. The continuous pots feel great, too: smooth and solid, with the perfect amount of resistance. The detented rotaries and rocker switches also deliver satisfying tactile feedback. Three voltage-controlled oscillators deploy beastly sonic firepower, while the classic control set affords an enormous amount of real-time tweakery. There's also generous CV connectivity for semi-modular flexibility and interfacing with legacy gear. Behringer has packed all the essentials (and then some) into this little jewel of a synth. The Behringer D is an unbelievable value. Get one and create some inspired music!

Pfunk heaven
This thing is insane. I have had it for like a week and I can't stop. A few YouTube videos later and I have dialed in Bernie Worrell's sound. At such an affordable price point compared to the "real" one, it is a no brainer. Of course, if it's in stock

As Good as the Real Thing, I Outh to know.
I am not new to Synthesizers my any means. I owned the original MiniMoog Model D in 1972 as well as a few other now "Classic" Synths like the Arp 2600. The Original MiniMoog was an incredible machine for it's time. However like all of the Synths from that period they had their issues. In particular, a few notable on the MiniMoog were tuning instability, frequency shifting as you increased octaves and after time the internal keyboard copper wire contacts had to have frequent cleanings to what we called back then the 'Whoop" sound when playing the keyboard and the oscillators would occasionally make an odd intermittent whooping sound. Another point to mention I had at my disposal several MiniMoogs at the time in various studio environments and they were never identical in sound or stability simply due to the nature of the manufacturing process.

Anyway fast forward to 2022 and I am extremely impressed with what Behringer has done to recreate the MiniMoog Model D. In so many good ways it is virtually identical in its oscillators, filter, envelopes, etc. to the original. So much so I went to my old patch book I created back in '72 and set up those patches on this machine and with just a few minor adjustments to the original patches every one of them is an exact replica!
Now add updated features like MIDI, PATCH POINTS, DEDICATED LFO, BOTH LOW PASS AND ADDED HIGH PASS FILTER OPTION and if so desired you can use built in Polychaining to use several Model D's make this synthesizer an even more extraordinary machine.

I've got this set up in a custom rack I bought on Etsy, the Model D sits on the shelf with a Keystep 32 mounted in the front rack connected via MIDI and all cables hidden in the rack. This pretty much mimics my original 1972 MiniMoog form factor (See my 2 comparison pictures) but with additional Keyboard features like Arpeggiator and Sequencer.

So the only reality you need to know, being a truly Analog Synthesizer, it like any other one, the oscillators will shift a bit and become slightly out of tune over time and will need minor retuning but hey my Fender Strat and Jazz Bass go out of tune also.

I love my Model D
I loved MiniMoog's sound but couldn't afford it given that I'm just a hobbyist. And even if I could afford it I'd probably not spend all that money on a vintage machine with no midi support that would cost me a fortune to maintain in the future. So, when I saw this clone from Behringer it was an instant buy. And heck I'm not regretting it. The sound is simply amazing, pretty much 100% like the original thing. Plus the guys at Behringer were cool enough to add an extra LFO and proper Midi support. The only downside is that the knobs are too close to each other and turning certain knobs becomes a tedious process. But for the price and the sound... Who cares?

As far as the comments about whether it's unethical or not that Behringer is cloning other people's circuits: Hardware and VST company giants are doing that for ages. I don't see why there's a difference in an analog modeling software based synth that is literally acting the same way a Moog circuit is and an equal analog circuit.

Thank you, Behringer. I can't wait for your new synth products.

My 4th one of these

Previously I had four of these connected to play polyphonically, it sounded great but was a huge pain to tweak up a patch. I bought a Prophet 6 to cure my need for polyphonic synth performance (also from Sweetwater). Those other Model D were from early batches so it's interesting seeing how they are now, a few years later, I bought this one specifically to do a review on High on Technology tech blog. I'm happy to report these synths are better than ever. Same great sound that made the original by Moog such an icon, same functions, but miniature and light weight (which really matters when you get old ;-). I love the light weight and compact size of these Behringer tributes. When I first read about Behringer making these I thought wow, a Mini ? $LOW (with rack ears) delivered, WoW. Behringer is on fire and hitting on all cylinders, this little synth sounds really good and is now available in a package deal with rack mount ears from Sweetwater.

This little Model D is a winner.

Good Music To You!

Thanks Sweetwater

Can't go wrong
Prog, New Wave, Classic Rock, Techno, Indy, Shoe gaze, Emo, House, Disco, oh yeah the funkiest of the Funk, and a Mini Moog is the definitive sound. This may not be a Mini Moog to the purest musician but this Model D is an infinite joy toy. For the price point the build quality is top notch. It's sturdy. Do yourself a favor, buy this and spend some time learning just how much Bob Moog rocks. Greg Titzer at Sweetwater went out of his way to make sure everything arrived and went well. Long after your VST patches are corrupt on some unbootable laptop, this thing will be going strong. Cheers!
