Hyper-realistic, Versatile Shotgun Mic

True to the Sennheiser brand, the MKH 8018 stereo shotgun RF condenser microphone represents a remarkable piece of audio technology, designed with an innovative push-pull transducer that harmonizes seamlessly with a low-tension diaphragm. This sophisticated engineering provides exceptional sensitivity and directionality, capturing the finest nuances of sound across a broad frequency spectrum. With three versatile switchable modes — M-S, X/Y-narrow, and X/Y-wide — you can customize the stereo image to perfectly suit the needs of each scene, whether you’re recording a lively conversation or the subtle ambience of nature. The MKH 8018 is also equipped with a switchable low-cut filter, effectively minimizing wind and handling noise, while the built-in -10dB pad ensures that no matter how loud the environment becomes, your recordings remain clean and free from clipping. Its sleek, compact design is perfect for attaching to cameras, making it an ideal companion for field recordings or on-the-go filmmakers. Furthermore, the timbre of the MKH 8018 is carefully matched to other microphones in the esteemed MKH 8000 series, allowing for effortless interchangeability without sacrificing audio quality.

Note: The MKH 8018 requires the ACS5 cable or the AC20Y cable. Please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer if you have any questions.

Foremost flexibility in the field

The MKH 8018 arms you with unparalleled flexibility by letting you select from one of three modes: M-S, X/Y-arrow, and X/Y-wide. In M-S mode, you'll benefit from independent mid and side signals, which then enable you to alter the stereo image's width either in post-production or in the field with a matrix mixer. Its two XY modes are tailored to any acoustic environment, with the wide pattern providing increased ambient pickup. In contrast, the narrow pattern gives you more off-axis rejection and thus less ambience. Between these three modes, there's no location or scene you can't record with confidence. Additionally, the MKH 8018's compact design is particularly suited for being attached to cameras, and its extended bass response makes sure that no sound or subtlety goes unnoticed.

Ingenious design for distortion-free performance

A push-pull transducer and a low-tension diaphragm combine to provide you with pristine distortion-free audio. Additionally, the MKH 8018 has an onboard 10dB pad, a switchable low-cut filter at 70Hz, and a fully floating balanced output stage. It all adds up to the MKH 8018's nearly silent operation — you'll be able to capture the quietest, most intensive scenes with aplomb.

Perfectly suited for other MKH 8000 mics

The MKH 8018's timbre is identical to that of other MKH 8000 mics. You can swap them out at any time, and your show, documentary, or ADR session will continue unabated.

Reviews

What an incredible mic
I purchased this mic primarily to use a stereo camera mounted microphone for capturing natural ambience of the outdoors -- cities, forests, etc, with directionality. This microphone excels in that regard. In fact it's such a good performer that I am now considering whether I need a mixpre 3 ii or mixpre 6ii.

I was a little shocked when I realized how much the suspension systems cost but I was able to find a good deal on the used market. Overall this mic excels at it's use case, I even think it might be a good choice for recording stereo ambience for music as well. Perhaps recording the room in a studio (a la Bruce Swedien style but with a single modern stereo mic).
