What Type of Audio Cable Do You Need?

These three cable types carry very different signal levels and generally shouldn’t be swapped. Instrument cables carry a high-impedance, unbalanced signal from your guitar or bass to an amp or DI box. Microphone cables typically use a balanced XLR connection to pass a low-level mic signal with noise rejection built in. Speaker cables are built to handle the amplified signal coming out of a power amp, and substituting an instrument cable in its place risks damaging your gear.
