A BNC cable, sometimes known as a coaxial or coax cable, is a common sight in the musical world. These cables are plugged into digital devices to synchronize their onboard word clocks. Synchronizing the word clocks of multiple devices provides incredible A/D and D/A conversion, minimizes annoying pops, and promotes signal clarity.

BNC Cable

While BNC cables are common, not all BNC cables can be used with your gear’s word clock. A standard video BNC cable is used for transmitting video signals between devices and is not compatible with a word clock because of its impedance rating. You see, a video coaxial BNC cable is rated for 50 ohms impedance. Your word clock requires the use of a 75 ohm cable, so you’ll need a special cable. Thankfully, you can purchase word-clock-compatible BNC cables right here at Sweetwater. We offer a selection of BNC word clock cables in lengths from just one foot to over 300 feet long!

If you’re determined to get the best possible sound from your digital gear, there’s a good chance that you’ve heard of or used a word clock before. For the uninitiated, a word clock is a set of timed pulses that synchronize the sampling frequency of multiple digital devices at a predetermined frequency. All digital data is made up of bits that make up words that represent sample values. A word clock tells an A/D or D/A converter when to begin each sample. By keeping an even space between these samples, a word clock helps a piece of gear create an ultra-accurate conversion. Locking a word clock to a specific frequency prevents any rogue data packets from leaking out and causing pops and clicks, which is a benefit to any system. And to synchronize the word clocks of multiple devices, you’ll need a BNC cable. For more information on the workings of word clocks, Sweetwater has a handy article that covers the Word Clock Basics.
