Find the Right MIDI Cable for Your Setup
With more gear integrating MIDI than ever before, having a reliable cable is key to keeping everything in sync. Sweetwater offers a wide selection of MIDI cables to keep your setup running smoothly, ranging from standard 5-pin and 7-pin MIDI cables for keyboards and drum machines to mini-DIN and TRS MIDI cables for pedalboards and modular synths. You’ll also find a full lineup of MIDI adapters and connectors to complete your chain. Whether you’re building a home studio or tour-proofing your stage rig, Sweetwater’s MIDI cables deliver the compatibility and performance your gear demands.
The Evolution of MIDI and MIDI Cables
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a communications protocol developed to standardize communication between synthesizers and other studio gear. Before the invention of MIDI, each manufacturer used its own connector types and protocols, effectively making their gear unusable with other brands. MIDI was invented to tackle this problem. Developed by a consortium of manufacturers, MIDI ports began appearing on equipment in 1982, gathered immediate popularity, and haven’t slowed down since.
A MIDI-enabled device records all of the data from your performance and sends it out of its MIDI port. The signal passes through the MIDI cable and into another MIDI device, transmitting the data in real time. Since the second device knows the MIDI language, it can re-create the performance exactly as you played it. This enables you to run the same keyboard part through multiple synths to create the perfect track.
Using MIDI Cables for Synths, DAWs, & More
Since its inception, MIDI has become the standard communications protocol for musical instruments and external hardware. MIDI cables can be used to control synthesizers, drum machines, software instruments in your digital audio workstation (DAW), lighting, studio automation, and much more. The possibilities are literally endless.
For more on MIDI applications and MIDI cables, check out Sweetwater’s Essential Guide to MIDI. Craig Anderton does a deep dive into all things MIDI, including the history, how the protocol works, and how to best integrate it into your workflow.
Need a little help syncing multiple MIDI devices? Sweetwater’s synth guru, Daniel Fisher, created a helpful How To Sync MIDI Devices guide just for you! He explains the inner workings of MIDI Clock, how to sync within your DAW, and more.
A Quick Note About MIDI Cable Length
How long can a MIDI cable be? According to the official MIDI spec, standard 5-pin cables perform best at lengths up to 50 feet. Any longer, and you risk signal dropouts or spotty performance. Our advice? Don’t use a cable any longer than you need. This keeps setups tidy and optimized, especially for MIDI-enabled pedalboards and compact Eurorack systems.
