About Turntables

Vinyl remains popular with audiophiles and DJs, and the right turntables depend on how you plan to listen. Sweetwater carries turntables for home listening and DJing, plus cartridges, styli, and slipmats.

Belt-Drive vs. Direct-Drive Turntables

Belt-drive turntables use a rubber belt that absorbs vibration, which helps keep motor noise away from the stylus and makes them a common choice for home listening. Direct-drive turntables spin the platter from a motor beneath it, so DJs can move the platter by hand for cueing and scratching with less risk of damaging the mechanism. The Technics SL-1200MK7 is a direct-drive DJ turntable, and the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X is an automatic belt-drive model.

Manual vs. Automatic Turntables

A manual turntable requires you to lift the tonearm and place it on the record, which gives you full control. An automatic turntable moves the tonearm at the press of a button, which can be easier for newer users.

Turntable Cartridges and Styli

The cartridge connects to the tonearm and holds the stylus, the needle that contacts the record. A worn cartridge or stylus can affect your sound and wear your records, so match any replacement to your tonearm’s mount type. Spherical styli tend to cost less and suit scratching, while elliptical styli typically offer greater fidelity and less record wear. Many turntables include a cartridge, though the SL-1200MK7 does not.

Do You Need a Phono Preamp?

A turntable’s signal is weaker than the line-level signal that many receivers and powered speakers expect, so it needs a phono preamp to boost it. Some turntables, including the AT-LP60X, have a built-in preamp, while others may need a standalone one.

Turntable Accessories Sold at Sweetwater

Sweetwater also carries turntable accessories, including cartridges and styli, phono preamps, slipmats, DJ control vinyl, and vinyl record cleaning and care products, so you can round out your setup in one place.
