Raising the Revstar Standard

Yamaha’s Revstar Standard RSS20 is an update of the original Revstar series of guitars, refined to offer improved comfort and even more striking visuals! This maple-topped double-cut’s lightweight chambered mahogany body is loaded with two Yamaha VH5 pickups that deliver bright and punchy tones that excel in almost any sonic application. The neck is comprised of carbon-reinforced mahogany so that it will stay straight and true in even the most challenging of environments. What’s more, Yamaha has equipped this Revstar with their proprietary “focus” switch that shifts your tone’s resonant frequency and supercharges your pickup’s power. If you’re looking for a high-performance, no-nonsense axe with explosive tones, rock-solid playability, and sleek modern aesthetics, the RSS20 sets the standard.

Comfortably curved Revstar body

The Revstar’s curvy lines and classic aesthetics are said to be inspired by the utilitarian British Café racer motorbikes found in 1960s-era London, adding a tough no-frills attitude to these sleek guitars. The unique double-cut chambered body was developed using Yamaha’s Acoustic Design process to optimize the Revstar’s balance, deliver a resonant tone, and reduce weight. One strum of the RSS20 is all it takes to see how Yamaha’s research paid off: the Revstar’s body is a supremely comfortable design that showcases Yamaha’s steadfast dedication to musical innovation!

Yamaha VH5 humbucking pickups for an articulate, powerful, and well-balanced tone

Yamaha spent a lot of time fine-tuning the pickups in the Revstar series — they tested over 50 prototypes before settling on the perfect combination of wire, windings, magnets, and baseplates for each guitar model in the series. The VH5 humbuckers in the RSS20 Revstar employ Alnico V magnets, a silver baseplate, and heavy formvar wire. This gives the RSS20 a bright and powerful sound that blends the richness and character of vintage electronics with the intensity and clarity of modern electronics.

Bring your sound into focus

Yamaha’s Revstar line already introduced their clarity-boosting “Dry” switch, and the RSS20 offers another distinct tonal feature to stand out from the crowd: the “Focus” switch. This dual-purpose push-pull switch adjusts the resonant frequency of your guitar’s tone and kicks up the power. When testing it out at Sweetwater, we found that it’s an incredibly versatile feature that’s just as good at achieving “rolled off” jazz tones as it is for boosting your amp into overdrive territory.

Yamaha Revstar Standard RSS20 Electric Guitar Features:

  • Ultra-comfortable and lightweight chambered mahogany body with a maple top
  • 3-piece carbon-reinforced mahogany set neck with double-cutaway offers incredible upper fret access
  • Yamaha VH5 humbucking pickups produce a rich and bright tone that excels in almost any sonic application
  • “Focus” switch shifts your tone’s resonant frequency and amps up your power
  • Jumbo stainless steel frets are highly resistant to wear
  • Highly playable 12-inch fingerboard radius

Reviews

Outstanding value
I've been a fan of Yamaha guitars for a long long time. I used to sell them a lifetime ago. In recent years they'd abandoned left handed players. One day I was searching for anything old and used and was presented with a hit on this model...... Hello! Then I began pouring over reviews. There was a lot to grab my attention. A came here to order one after about 4 hours of reading and watching videos. I'm not going to reiterate everything that is already out there point by point. Instead let me give some thoughts on my experience so far... This mix of features come together in a profound way. This thing is versatile. It's insanely balanced physically and sonically. The neck is outstanding. This is my first experience with stainless steel frets and they AMAZING. Fit and finish is what you'd expect at higher price points. One final specific point... I don't know if Yamaha tweaked the recipe with the focus switch from when all the reviews were done, but a lot of those reviewers seemed pretty "meh" about it and I can say to my ears the audio demos didn't have me salivating. I wasn't expecting much from it as a result. In my hands though, plugged in.... it really does something special to my ears. Funny thing, on nearly every 2 humbucker guitar I own or have ever touched (and that's a lot of them) I almost NEVER use both pickups together. On this Revstar it might be my favorite spot. It's so balanced that it makes me wonder if there is something in the circuitry to help achieve that. When I ordered this I opted to have it Plek'd and KUDOS to the tech who did the setup. It's about as perfect as I've ever had or have done myself (setup not Plek) Huge props to my sales engineer Robb LaRosa for all his help with this purchase. One final thought not related to this purchase.... in the past few years as I speak to other musicians whenever Sweetwater comes up in conversation, universally I hear, "I LOVE THOSE GUYS".

This is not a paid review in case it feels that way.

I have been eyeing this guitar since they've hit the market, I really don't know why I didn't buy one early on.
The tones and craftsmanship are unbelievably phenomenal! If you have small hands, the neck works very well with my small hands! This guitar is the one I play the most, I love the neck shape and nut width! I had mine PLEKed.
A big thanks to my rep Payton Vieth, he goes the extra!

Outstanding Guitar and Service!!!
As a lefty, my choices for a quality mid-range guitar are often limited. And while I try to give most of my business to local music merchants many times I've had to order online for guitars and other items I've wanted. I purchased the newest Revstar lefty model with the humbuckers back in 2022 from Sweetwater and absolutely love it!

I knew I wanted the other model with the P90s but Yamaha doesn't offer that one for left handers currently (maybe you can remedy that Yamaha). So I consulted with my longtime salesman, Chris Neyman, at Sweetwater and he and his techs recommended swapping Seymour Duncan P-Rails into another stock humbucker model.

I chose the black one this time. This guitar is outstanding! Already knew I loved the feel of the satin neck and the playability from the previous Revstar but the sound of the P90s in the P-Rails is awesome!

Chris has been my Sweetwater salesman for years and his customer service is nothing short of spectacular! Always following up with any purchases and answering any questions I may have. This recent purchase was the most "complicated" with the fitting of the P-Rails but everything went flawlessly.

Thanks to Chris and the great technicians at Sweetwater for prepping this great guitar!
