Experience the Heartbreaker Magic with This Iconic Tele

Mike Campbell’s distinctive rhythms and fiery leads were the heartbeat of the Heartbreakers, delivering instantly recognizable chord progressions and unforgettable hooks for many of Tom Petty’s most beloved hits. The Fender Stories Collection Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster honors one of Mike’s most cherished instruments — his heavily modified 1972 Telecaster. This solidbody electric guitar boasts a substantial alder body, which is given an Heirloom nitrocellulose lacquer Red Dog Red finish. Old-school Tele enthusiasts will savor every note, thanks to the guitar’s hand-cradling ’70s C-shaped maple neck, topped with a silky-smooth 7.25-inch-radius fingerboard with 21 vintage-style frets. Outfitted with a custom Mike Campbell Red Dog pickup set, this Telecaster includes two vintage-style humbuckers and a brawny single-coil bridge pickup, enhanced by an onboard Destruct boost circuit. In terms of hardware, the Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster features an expressive Bigsby B5F vibrato and vintage-style F-stamped tuning machines. No matter how many modded Teles you’ve played, it’s a safe bet you’ve never experienced anything quite like the Fender Stories Collection Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster. Like its legendary owner, this guitar is truly in a league of its own.

A legendary guitar with a storied past

Mike Campbell has played countless guitars throughout his decades-long career, but few are as distinguished as his 1972 Telecaster, affectionately known as Red Dog. According to lore, Mike acquired this guitar from a former student in Florida, complete with a Bigsby and a built-in boost circuit. This was the guitar used to record the iconic solo on Tom Petty’s hit song, “Refugee,” and it was prominently featured in the song’s music video. The Fender Stories Collection Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster pays homage to this unique instrument, featuring an Heirloom nitrocellulose lacquer Red Dog Red finish for an authentic look, a period-correct neck carve for genuine playability, and a custom Mike Campbell Red Dog pickup set for that signature tone. A Bigsby B5F vibrato completes this dazzling guitar.

Unique electronics inspired by the original

The Fender Stories Collection Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster boasts some of the most idiosyncratic electronics we’ve ever seen on a Tele here at Sweetwater. For starters, it features a custom Mike Campbell Red Dog pickup set, including two vintage-style humbuckers and a muscular single-coil bridge pickup. According to Mike, the humbuckers in the original guitar were sourced from a Kalamazoo-built instrument, while the bridge pickup was a stock Tele single-coil. Additionally, the Mike Campbell Red Dog Tele is equipped with an onboard boost modeled after the original instrument’s Destruct circuit, which Mike used to add extra grind to the “Refugee” solo.

Vintage playability at its finest

Players with a passion for vintage playability will find it hard to put down the Fender Stories Collection Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster. Its ’70s C-shaped maple neck gives you plenty to wrap your hand around, while the 21-fret, 7.25-inch-radius fingerboard provides a silky-smooth feel that’s downright irresistible. Additionally, retro-minded pitch purveyors are treated to a Bigsby B5F vibrato. To complete the vintage aesthetic, the Mike Campbell Red Dog Tele features an Heirloom nitrocellulose lacquer finish, ensuring an authentic playing experience from top to bottom.

Exactly What I've Been Waiting For
As soon as this model was announced I knew I had to have one. I love Mike Campbell, but the specs are what grabbed my attention. After playing nothing by Gibson Les Pauls for the past 25 years, I knew this guitar would be my immediate #1. The pickups are incredible. Warm, dynamic, and versatile. The bridge pickup has been described as being like an old Broadcaster pickup. It's hot, but you can still get a great clean sound from it. I'm sure you could dial in some twangy Telecaster tones, but that's not my thing. The two humbuckers blend really well with the single coil. They are bright, with a dash of PAF tones. With certain amp settings I can treat the middle humbucker as a second bridge pickup without the single coil getting too brash. The "destruct" button is a great feature. It can be absolute mayhem or a nice lead boost. The neck gets a lot of mentions, and I will say it can be an adjustment. It is incredibly thin at the nut, but not a big deal. I've played a lot of Fenders with thin necks and I also have a Gibson Greeny Les Paul, which has a really big neck. The Red Dog neck didn't take long to feel like home. I bought a new Tele Pro II a week before this model was announced, but I knew this was the guitar for me said goodbye to several other guitars to get this. The Pro II and Greeny stayed. The Red Dog is it's own glorious thing.

Neck breaks the deal…
The Red Dog Tele reissue was a great idea.

The electronics (3 pups), 5-way switch, destruct boost circuit onboard and a Bigsby are all great. Nice nitro Journeyman-type finish. The case is strong and beautiful. All very cool.

The dealbreaker for me (and others) is that the neck is too narrow, too slim. A 1.6 nut is just too tight. The 7.25 radius may work with a wider nut (or if the radius were compound), but it's just too snug for my fingers. And the killer is the "vintage" frets. They are too flat (almost worn or filed looking); and these frets are too leaden to me - difficult to bend strings and get good sustain, good harmonics.

Not sure when they do these reissues why they have to keep exact specs of original. I want something fun to play, in the spirit of the original, not a museum piece. The missing ferrule, for example, is cute but unnecessary. As some people have noted, we have learned a lot about frets since the 70s; so why not upgrade and improve the frets. And, again, the nut is just too darn narrow.
Nice guitar but.
I got mine..loved the look..cracked finish,Bixby and over all look. It was loud as hell but I fixed that by turning down the volume under the selection switch. However I love the sound when the boost is on not so much when it's off. The battery is only good for 1 gig. If you don't mind changing the battery every gig then it's amazing. If you don't then pass. But I do love playing it.
