A Re-creation of Eric Johnson’s Vibe-packed ’54 “Virginia” Strat

To guitarists and music aficionados (including those at Sweetwater), few modern axemen are as revered as Eric Johnson. Known for his unique, genre-hopping style, matchless virtuosity, and relentless tone chasing, Eric knows how to spot a great-sounding and soul-inspiring guitar. Looking back over his lifetime as a guitar connoisseur, certain instruments stand out to Eric for their sound, playability, and other intangible qualities impossible to define. One such guitar was Eric’s 1954 “Virginia” Strat, which had a starring role in Eric’s Grammy-winning albums Tones and Ah Via Musicom. The 1954 “Virginia” Strat was a gem among Eric’s collection, featuring a rare sassafras body, maple neck, a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and customized electronics, designed to produce a sublime vintage tone with a clarity fit for Eric’s intricate fretwork. Released as part of The Fender Stories Collection, the Eric Johnson 1954 “Virginia” Stratocaster is loving replication of one of Eric’s favorite guitars, and it’s one you’re sure to love, too.

Sublime tonewood combination

1950s Fender Stratocasters are known for their ash bodies. However, in some of the early 1954 runs (of which Eric Johnson’s 1954 “Virginia” Strat was a part), sassafras entered the mix. Sonically similar to mahogany and walnut, sassafras has creamy mids and lows and a shimmering high end with superb note separation. Moving on from the body — the guitar’s single-piece maple neck contributes a strong fundamental tone and crisp articulation, and its Soft “V” shape sinks into your hand for an exceptionally comfortable feel. To cement the classic vibe and vintage aesthetic of this superb instrument, both body and neck are finished in gloss nitrocellulose lacquer — just like they would have been in 1954.

Eric Johnson spec’d electronics

The Eric Johnson 1954 “Virginia” Strat features Eric’s custom wiring and personal pickup selection, including a DiMarzio HS-2 with an active top coil in the bridge and a Fender-original ‘57/’62 single-coil Strat set in the middle and neck. The HS-2 possesses a clean and crisp humbucking tone, with a more natural quality different from comparable humbuckers, and, in single-coil mode, it has a throwback sound that complements the 1954 “Virginia” Strat’s vintage character. The 57’/62’ Strat set contains period-correct replications of old-school Fender Strat pickups, reverse-engineered from an authentic 1963 Strat. Containing Alnico V magnets with Formvar-coated wire, fiber bobbins, cloth-covered lead wires, and staggered, hand-beveled pole pieces, the 57’/62’ Strat set produces a timeless Fender tone full of glassy highs and rich lows.

Fender Stories Collection Eric Johnson 1954 "Virginia" Stratocaster Features:

  • Rare combination of a sassafras body and maple neck
  • Comfortable Soft “V” neck shape is a pleasure to play

Amazing Guitar
This guitar sounds amazing. The mods that Eric Johnson made make this a great Strat. The sustain is great and the single coil hamburger is amazing. The Fender team got this EJ replica right.
“Virginia” EJ Strat 10/10
I've been playing this Strat for a couple weeks now. It looks amazing and sounds amazing. I was worried because Fender always lacks in the tone/fullness department. This strat has it all. The 5 way pickup selection has all the options you could want. The out of phase 4th position is amazing to play around with as well. Looks- it's a beauty to behold in person. Very comfortable. The neck is really thick with a soft v that is very comfortable. The lacquer on the neck does make it sticky to play though. Why Fender? All in all I haven't really put it down. One thing I am curious about, the springs for the tremolo. Mine showed up with 3 springs winning parallel. On other EJ strats I've seen 4/5 springs installed. So I'm curious if mine showed up like that from the factory or if someone has gone in and rearranged them.
Absolutely a Custom Shop Stratocaster!
I truly feel this is Fender Custom Shop quality and the best non-Custom Shop Stratocaster I've ever seen or played. Everything about this guitar screams quality. I love the pickups on here as they really got them right. Everything else on the Strat seems like Custom Shop; Especially the Sassafras body. Also a shout out to my guitar guy Tom Koch who always gets it right for me!
A wonderful Strat
Beautifully finished in all details. It has a great tone and I really like the feel of the neck, even with the 12" radius fretboard. The neck does feel a little thick but it's still easy to play; and the soft V profile is quite comfortable.
Unique Build, Quality player.
This is by far my favorite Stratocaster I've ever owned or played. The neck shape is big and comfy for whatever you're trying to play, one of the quicker maple necks I've played. The best part of this guitar is by far the hand-wired pickups, they have a great range of tonal possibilities between positions and achieve EJ's sound. Besides what makes it a joy to play the Nitro finish on the sassafras body is stunning and the build quality is superb, couldn't be happier with it. Shoutout to my SW rep Frank for helping me purchase it and answering all my questions.

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Fender guitars, and if you’re like many of the guitarists at Sweetwater, then Fender not only made the first guitar you ever bought " they made the last one too! From building the first mass-produced solidbody electric guitars and basses in the 1950s to creating some of the most influential amplifier designs in history, it’s no wonder why Fender is one of the biggest names in the business. As one of the world’s largest Fender dealers, we have countless guitars, basses, amps, effects pedals, and accessories in stock and ready to ship, whenever you need them. We’re always getting our hands on their latest creations, and there’s nothing we love more than to tell our customers all about them!
