A San Dimas Fit for an Aristocrat

Whether he’s tearing it up onstage with the Aristocrats, lighting up his fretboard on YouTube, or injecting Hans Zimmer’s compositions with 6-string muscle, Guthrie Govan is in a league of his own. And there’s only one solidbody electric guitar that can handle his virtuosic playing: the Charvel Guthrie Govan Signature MJ San Dimas SD24 CM. The Guthrie Govan SD24 is centered around an ash-topped basswood San Dimas-style body, with a graphite-reinforced maple neck, a sculpted shredder’s heel, and a compound-radius fingerboard to ensure maximum playability. You can wheedle an endless array of tones from this guitar’s custom-wound HSH pickup set, while its 5-way blade switch and mini toggles unlock additional sonic textures. Beyond that, a recessed locking tremolo, Gotoh die-cast locking tuners, and a Graph Tech TUSQ XL nut ensure rock-solid stability — even after serious whammy bar exploitation. The Guthrie Govan Signature MJ San Dimas SD24 CM also features choice crème dot fingerboard inlays, Luminlay side dots, and Luminlay numbered dome knobs.

Fast-playing compound-radius fretboard

If complex, virtuoso-level shredding is your bag, you’ll appreciate the Guthrie Govan Signature MJ San Dimas SD24 CM. This solidbody electric guitar’s curvilinear San Dimas-style body is a wonderful slippery thing with a sculpted shredder’s cut heel, which makes accessing upper frets effortless. Its caramelized, graphite-reinforced maple neck offers rock-solid stability with a built-for-speed satin finish. Beyond that, the Guthrie Govan SD24 boasts an easy-playing compound-radius fingerboard with 24 jumbo stainless steel frets. With a 12-inch radius at the nut that flattens to 16 inches at the 12th fret, you’ve got the just-right feel you need to grab chords in lower positions, while the flatter upper registers enable blazing-fast fretwork.

Versatile HSH configuration of custom-wound pickups

Versatile doesn’t even begin to describe Guthrie Govan. He’s a true virtuoso’s virtuoso, with the ability to nimbly morph between jazz comping, blues-tinged slides, and full-blown metal shredding without so much as a pause. Boasting a versatile HSH configuration of custom-wound pickups, the Charvel Guthrie Govan Signature MJ San Dimas SD24 CM was built to keep up with Mr. Govan’s eclectic playing. This solidbody electric guitar includes a 5-way blade switch, which unlocks a bevy of sonic textures with coil-splitting for achieving classic Strat-style in-between tones. You also get a 2-way mini toggle to engage single-coil simulation in positions one and five (full-on bridge and neck humbucker positions, respectively).

Rock-solid locking tremolo

The Guthrie Govan Signature MJ San Dimas SD24 CM is primed for shameful whammy bar abuse, thanks to its locking tremolo. Designed to work in conjunction with this electric guitar’s Gotoh die-cast locking tuners and Graph Tech TUSQ XL nut, this single-locking trem provides tuning stability that rivals double-locking designs. This tremolo includes a convenient pop-in arm and a sustain-enhancing brass block. The guitarists here at Sweetwater are blown away by this trem’s recessed design — it sits nice and flush with the Guthrie Govan SD24’s body to provide texture when you need it and a relatively low profile when you don’t.

Supreme playability

Everything about this guitar has exceeded my expectations. I initially purchased an Ibanez AZ MM1 but it simply felt stiff and (as much as I hate to say it as a longtime AZ fanboy) cheap. Per usual, Sweetwater was totally accommodating and made the swap quick and easy - looking at you Brad DiCarlo.

As soon as the Charvel showed up I knew I made the right choice. The neck is a thinner profile, which I was worried about, but it plays like an absolute dream. Incredibly smooth and effortlessly playable from top to bottom. The fretboard's compound radius design serves its purpose and adds to the comfort level when playing higher up on the neck. Another concern I had was about the single locking trem bridge - basically the bridge-half of a Floyd Rose setup. I've never owned a Floyd and so I didn't know what to expect. Oh. My. Guthrie. What an absolute treat. Tuning stability like I've never experienced. Like… what bends? Finally the setup was the best I've ever had on any guitar I've owned. The action came low and buzzless - which, in my opinion, is the white whale setup - always desired, rarely encountered.

The pickups are stellar and the single coil simulation makes it possible to achieve whatever tone you're looking for. It's as simple as that.

I foresee this being my go-to guitar for a very long time. Couldn't be happier.

Well It Certainly Clicks A Lot of Boxes!

What I was looking for: 24 frets, flat neck radius, roasted maple neck, dependable trem system, quality humbucker pickups with coil splitting, locking tuners, and supreme playability. This guitar seemed to fit the bill. There's no way I'll ever play like Guthrie - but I certainly hold his opinion about quality guitar gear in high regard. I love that it has the graphite-reinforced neck. The TUSQ nut and the stainless steel frets are great touches. I've seen some videos featuring players who say they want to mod the wiring for the pickups, etc. - not me! I think the pickup combinations are genius. This guitar will get me to the place I need to reach with my new band. I think it will work with basically any genre. The playability is just excellent - and that's going to make this one my new number 1.

(Furtive) Jack-of-all-trades guitar by the master of all styles

This Bad Asteroid guitar is truly a Wonderful Slippery Thing that will have you Living the Dream whether you are working or just enjoying a Pig's Day Off. Puns aside, this is a marvelous instrument worthy of Guthrie Govan's name. He clearly achieved what he set out to do with this signature model. It is probably the single most practical guitar that I own. The single coil simulation expands the sonic palette with which you can paint soundscapes. The tremolo bridge just works. The use of Luminlay just makes sense. Well thought out and crafted from start to finish.

No regrets!

I own many guitars and have been playing over 40 years, and this guitar lives up to the hype! There is no style music or tone that you can't achieve with this guitar, given the pickup configuration and options of the 5 way selector and split coil feature. The neck is very comfortable and plays with minimal effort. I did adjust the spring tension and bridge height some to accommodate my preferred action of 2mm on the low E and 1.5mm on the high E. After that it was a dream to play. If I could only own one guitar, this would be at the top of my list. ;)

Gorgeous, amazing craftsmanship, BUT….

First I want to thank Stephen Oppenheim my sales rep, he's great to deal with.

The pros: It's a beautiful, well crafted, supple in the hands, very easy to play guitar, the neck is very smooth and the craftsmanship is second to non. Pickups are hot, lots of tones and variety.

The Cons: soft shell case, a guitar this expensive should come with a hard shell. Constanly turned down the tone knob every time I grabbed the whammy bar, things would start sounding muffled and I would look down, tone would be on 2. The high E string constantly fell out of the nut. Could not keep it in constant pitch, it would drift flat or sharp, maybe this gets better with time?? The whammy bar has play in it, it's not a solid feel. No case candy or explanation of the pickup selector and the little switch, I could not tell what was happening, single coil vs hum-bucker, the little switch was super subtle, it seemed to go brighter to darker

All in all I will be returning this gorgeous machine, it reconfirms why I only play teles now, this guitar is almost too easy to play, I like to fight and earn it a little, I prefer the 52 U shape boat necks, I found my self super uncomfortable on such a thin neck after running it through its paces. Way more guitar than I need to be honest. I still gave it 5 stars for its quality and craftsmanship, in the right hands it will be a beast.
