About Mini Synthesizers
One can argue that synthesizers forever changed the landscape of music when they were first introduced back in the mid-’50s with the RCA Music Synthesizer Mark I by introducing new sounds and textures. Other engineers would further explore crafting their own analog synthesizers that didn’t require hundreds of vacuum tubes, were voltage controlled, and had a wider array of sound and modulation options. One of those engineers was Robert Moog, who created the Moog Synthesizer in 1964. The Moog Synthesizer was an analog modular synthesizer that used patch cables to connect different modules, such as amplifiers, filters, sound shapes, and many more. But even with the Moog Synthesizer’s massive success, it still wasn’t affordable or portable enough for amateur musicians. Thus came the minimoog, which, unsurprisingly, given its name, was also produced by Moog. This was a massive step for keyboardists and musicians looking to dive into synthesis and sound design without dishing out tens of thousands of dollars. The minimoog also set the standard for how synthesizers looked by incorporating a built-in keyboard into the synthesizer. Other synthesizers, such as the ARP 2600, OB-X, Yamaha DX7, and many more, came after the creation of the minimoog and revolutionized music and sound design.
As the decades have passed, synthesizers have gotten smaller and smaller due to the demand for synthesizers and the rise of the number of bedroom musicians who lack the recording space that some recording studios have. Many manufacturers now produce mini synthesizers that take up far less space than a full keyboard synthesizer but still have the feel and sound of some of the most sought-after synths. At Sweetwater, you can find mini synthesizers that are analog, digital, or hybrid and come in semi-modular for those who love patching modules together.
