All the Power of the Hydrasynth in a Portable Format

The Hydrasynth Explorer gives you full access to the renowned 8-voice sound engine of the original Hydrasynth in a compact, scaled-down package. Featuring 37 PolyTouch-enabled slim synth keys and battery-powered capability, the Hydrasynth Explorer is a grab-and-go sound lab for intrepid synthesists. Like the 49-key and desktop Hydrasynth models, the Hydrasynth Explorer boasts 8-voice polyphony; each voice serves up three WaveScane oscillators offering 219 different waveforms, with four Mutators total for extensive waveshaping. There's a ton of potential for creating nuanced, nonlinear sounds. The five ADSR envelope generators offer delay and hold and can have either linear or exponential curves between stages, and the five LFOs offer a total of 11 waveshapes plus delay, fade in, and smoothing. Throw in a highly responsive pitch-bend strip and a mod strip with LED depth indicators, and you’ve got a compact performance synthesizer with endless sound design capabilities!

Extensive modulation capabilities

With its 32-slot modulation matrix, Hydrasynth Explorer empowers you to create incredibly nuanced and expressive sounds. Synthesists at Sweetwater are particularly impressed with its envelope generators (five per voice), which offer delay and hold in addition to ADSR stages. Each stage of the envelope can sweep through exponential and logarithmic curves, which offers big creative potential for long, evolving modulations.

Like most of the functions on Hydrasynth Explorer, envelopes can be locked to bpm for tempo-synced modulations. Combined with the looping function, you can use the envelopes as LFOs with interesting waveshapes. And speaking of LFOs, Hydrasynth Explorer offers five LFOs per voice with 11 total waveshapes. That includes the 8-step LFO, which allows you to create custom waveshapes.

Amazing performance potential with PolyTouch

Whether you're performing or recording, Hydratouch Explorer delivers an incredibly expressive playing experience, especially when you dig into its PolyTouch capabilities. PolyTouch is a new method of polyphonic aftertouch sensing. You have full control over aftertouch curves, offsets, and release times, giving you big creative potential when using aftertouch to manipulate your sounds. Plus, you can expand your performance even further with the highly responsive pitch and mod strips!

Deep synthesis with an intuitive interface

While the Hydrasynth Explorer engine is remarkably powerful, it's relatively simple to find and tweak the parameters you're looking for. On the front panel, you'll find a graphic representation of the audio path, with buttons to select each section (individual oscillators, mixer, effects, and so on). Selecting a section brings its associated parameters to the display, with eight encoders ready to tweak. In other words, every section of this synth can be accessed with a button press — no menu diving required!

Advanced real-time control via eight macro controls

One of the most popular aspects of software synthesizers is the ability to control multiple parameters simultaneously via macro controls, and the Hydrasynth Explorer gives you that creative power in hardware form. You can customize its eight macro controls to tweak up to eight destinations simultaneously. With a total of 170 modulation destinations to explore, you can easily use the macro controls to warp between completely distinct sound variations on the fly.

Hydrasynth Explorer best bang for the bucks

This little guy is a powerhouse synth. Sounds amazing Aftertouch keyboard is a nice touch. Mod Mattix 5 LFOs 5 Envelopes. Mutant waveforms and nice effects plus arpeggiator this is a loaded keyboard for the price. Just getting familiar with its interface but seems user friendly. The software manager also works well. Overall extremely happy with this purchase nice addition to my setup

Hydra has won

Best synth for the $$ Some patches sounds better than analog synths. Step sequence with lfos check!, stereo filter splits, check! weird wavetable manipulation check, turn it in to a drum machine check !, IF YOU JUST USED AS A MIDI CONTROLER AND NOTHING ELSE, IT WOULD BE WORTH THE MONEY! Battery Power, Check! LOUD as F*(K , CHECK ! The only thing is I wish it had some little speakers built in but I might mod something on to the case idk.

AWESOME!!!!

I'll keep this short.

Is this a $3000 top of the line synth? No. Would this be a good synth for rock? No.

For EDM, Ambient or Vangelis style music? YES YES YES.

The mini keys are much longer and wider than mini keys (sorry for bad photos of comparison to Akai mini and Novation Mininova) and have poly aftertouch which is cool. I have this on a sliding shelf under an Arturia 61 key and my Elektron Digikey.

I own 42 hardware synths (see photo for an example) and this thing is still a keeper. I only mention this to illustrate how the ASM still has a place in my studio among a diverse collection of synths. There are many sounds that are actually much different than anything else I have. It has 640 editable presets and can also run on batteries. This synth is awesome the only regret I have is that I didn't buy the full size Hydrasynth but I might buy that one as well.

Buy one you wont regret it-worth every penny.

And lastly thanks again to Ian Lemberg my sales Engineer-AWESOME!!!!!

Revolutionary.

The depth of this engine is out-of-control. It pretty much scratches every itch. Even if you're a die-hard analog enthusiast, you'll be surprised how closely this can get to analog-type sounds. I've had the Explorer for months and each time I play it I get wildly different results from it.

Just mind-blowing. Think seriously of getting one for yourself--you won't regret it.

New to Synth - but wow!!

One cavaet here is when it comes to synth hardware i'm pretty much a newbi. I had a DX7 and Juno-106 back in the 80's, but haven't messed with synths since...

I've been doing guitar-based music in Logic for about 5 years now. Used a drum machine for drums, played guitar parts, and use an octo-pedal for bass. Now I wanted to branch out with a synthesizer to try to up the ante on what i'm doing. I'm mostly in need of good Hammond B3, Piano, and 80's synth sounds. I have demo'd a few vst's but the UI was different on all and I really didn't want to invest time to learn a bunch of UI's. So, that led me to wanting a small synth. Btw, I do have a midi controller and was using logic software instruments, but i wasn't impressed and couldn't get the gain I needed to get them to stand out in the mix.

I was looking at the Jupiter XM but in the end was turned-off by the old UI and OS. Enter the Hydrasynth. Amazing sounds, pretty good feel for a small 37-key keyboard, love the O-scope, and tweaking stuff is super easy to understand and do and the sounds have hit the sweet-spot in my mixes. Highly recommend this synth if you want a lot of flexibility and are ok with hybrid analog - great sounds were my one must-have specification and the Hydrasynth was right on target for me.

I was also very impressed with the build quality on the unit. Buttons feel solid - great use of button and encoder lighting to guide the user, and the mini keys feel great and the seem to have enough surface area to not cramp my play.

One minor frustration that might be helpful to share... I downloaded the patch list document from ASM and when I received the synth, none of the documented patches matched what was stored in factory presets on the hydrasynth. It came loaded with the 2.0 firmware but still had the V1.5 patches. Easy fix though, downloaded the 2.0 patch banks from ASM, and using the ASM Patch Manager I was able to easily swap old for new. ASM also had a free bonus bank from SunGod RA (not a synth guy so I had no Idea who that was) but downloaded that to a user bank and for the most part it's not bad - a good number of usable patches... The patch manager is NOT a patch editor btw...

All in all i'm very happy with this purchase!
