An Update to a Modern Digital Piano Classic

Casio’s Privia digital pianos are renowned for their authentic playability and lifelike sound. Now, the updated PX-S3100 brings a wealth of improvements compared to its predecessor, including a redesigned damper/resonance system, improved speakers, enhanced wireless capabilities, and all-new piano preset tones. With its sleek, glossy panel and unibody chassis, the PX-S3100 evokes a high-end acoustic grand in a svelte, modern design that’s not much larger than the keys themselves. The touch-sensor controls are revealed only after the power button is pressed, and they’re easy to see in any light. They fade away when powered off, leaving only a clean, seamless top panel. And thanks to Casio’s newly designed, fully weighted Smart Scaled Hammer Action keyboard, the PX-S3100 provides uncompromising piano touch with a proprietary key scaling system that reproduces the characteristics of each of the 88 notes, while ebony and ivory key textures ensure confident, comfortable playing in any climate.

Grand piano and beyond

The PX-S3100 is loaded with 700 onboard tones, including a new set of upgraded piano preset sounds. String resonance brings out the harmonic bloom between vibrating strings, while damper resonance adds natural richness and depth. When you play the PX-S3100, you hear the mechanical sounds of dampers rising and keys being pressed and returning to their original position. For even greater detail, hammer response and key-off simulation react naturally to your playing dynamics. You’ll also find lifelike tine and reed electric pianos, organs, strings, vibraphone, harpsichord, and more.

Bring in your backing band

With 200 onboard rhythms that span the globe as well as the history of popular music, you’ll always have a band ready to accompany your playing. From old favorites to chart-smashing hits, your PX-S3100 rhythm section plays with incredibly realistic instruments that sound better than ever. Drum kits come alive with authentic acoustic drums, vintage drum machine sounds, and a huge collection of percussion instruments and effects.

Take full control

With an included WU-BT10 wireless adapter and class-compliant USB that lets you connect to any Mac/PC/iOS/Android device with no drivers or installation needed, the PX-S3100 makes an ideal master controller for your home studio. It includes a pitch bend wheel for expressive control over its many sounds, plus two assignable knobs that can control the onboard effects and other parameters. In addition to the damper pedal or optional 3-pedal unit, the PX-S3100 has an expression pedal jack for additional modulation possibilities. It’s more affordable than many dedicated 88-key MIDI controllers, provides a superb piano feel, and includes a huge collection of studio-quality sounds. And the PX-S3100’s trim chassis easily fits where bulkier instruments can’t.

Compact and lightweight

Privia pianos have become popular with Sweetwater’s gigging keyboardists because they deliver authentic grand piano sound and feel in a compact package. But now Casio has managed to make the PX-S3100 43% smaller than previous-generation Privias without compromising performance. The PX-S3100 will not only look great in any room in your home, but it will also make life easier when it’s time to play out — you’ll really appreciate its light weight (under 25 pounds) and optional AA battery power.

Connect and create

The Casio Music Space app for iOS/Android puts you in the driver’s seat when it comes to all of the PX-S3100's functions, with an intuitive and easy-to-use interface to match. Looking to improve your playing? The app also includes access to Casio's highly interactive piano lessons that are sure to encourage and entertain players of all skill levels.

Upgraded onboard speaker system and Bluetooth

A WU-BT10 wireless Bluetooth adapter lets you connect your devices wirelessly to the PX-S3100, playing your music through its powerful stereo speaker system. The onboard amplification system projects crystal-clear sound toward both the pianist and the audience and is engineered to sound accurate whether the instrument is placed against a wall, on a table, or in an open performance space. The speakers project toward the player from stealth ports just above the keys, and sound is directed toward the audience from rear-facing drivers behind an elegantly designed grille. Plus, Casio has upgraded the PX-S3100’s speakers with an incredible boost to their frequency response, volume, and articulation, resulting in exceptionally true-to-life piano tone. Two headphone jacks allow for quiet practice, duo performances, and teacher/student interaction.

Reviews

literally the best portable digital piano I've ever played
I've played this digital piano for dozens over gigs after only having it for about 6 months. One of the reasons I've been able to use it for so many gigs is the battery-operated capability. That alone helped me perform about 8 gigs where there was no electricity. (I coupled it with my Roland combo-amp that also runs on batteries.)
The other reason is that it sounds good. Whether I play it through the built-in speakers or external sound system, it sounds very good. Of course, it can't match the piano virtual instruments I use in my studio, but for an economical, highly-portable keyboard it does an awesome job.
Thanks to Charlie and all the folks at Sweetwater who always offer the best before and after sale support.

Stunning Quality Piano
The PX-S3100 is an amazing Instrument for pianists organists and arrangers to use. I am a retired music teacher and professional organist and after 5 months of owning this piano I continue to be impressed with the tones, accompaniments and so many features too numerous to mention here. The Casio Music Space app is free and allows the user to adjust most of the features while allowing you to see all this on your cellphone or tablet. Such an amazing and versatile piano which can also run on batteries!

Previa is outstanding especially for my grand piano conversion
When my piano tuner told me the bad news that it would cost well over $7000 to make my 1898 A.B.Chase 6.5 foot grand piano working at, or about where it should be, my heart sank but at that point I was looking for solutions, as it a digital keyboard to put in to substitute for the old action. After contacting Sweetwater and speaking with AJ and finding what would not work, he suggested the Casio Privia due to its low profile. That way once the old action was removed which had a height of 3 inches, the Previa, which had a height of 4" (the lowest profile available in keyboards), might work. I selected the 3100 model and it fit in to the cavity with only 1/4 inch on each side. Basically, my idea was perfect! The keyboard fits, the weighted keys feel right, the sound is ideal, the features are more than I really needed and I will have to learn more about them to get the most benefits. Bottom line: if you have an old piano and the measurements work to substitute this Casio, do it. There is virtually no real videos on this process except a few that actually build a keyboard into a piano, very complicated.
My process was too simple and took about 45 minutes to accomplish.
1) remove action, measure space for height, length and depth.
2) check Priva measurements to see if it fits as pianos can vary but not that much.
3) Call AJ and buy one.
4) Start having fun and not have to junk your old piano
Lastly, if you don't have a piano and want one for its esthetics in your home but want one for little or nothing, use this method and you will be recycling someone's old treasure and keeping it out of the landfill and having the gift of music for the household. By the way, no more need for expensive tuners to come by and give you the bad news.

Perfect at this price point
This keyboard is far from perfect. However, it has the features and sound I need.
It's heavy, but luggable (along with power, sustain pedal, etc.). I got the Casio case for it and that helps.
Battery operation? Check! It works well, too. Double-A batteries and they last through a whole gig (sometimes 2 if they're on the short side).
Decent sounds? Check! The bright piano and studio piano work well in some venues. The default grand piano works in others. Plenty of electric pianos, bass splits (had to learn how to do this, but it's not difficult), organs, layers (notably strings to add to the various pianos), and more. These are not even close to useable in the studio, but completely adequate for live gigs both with bands and solo. I even played it lick-for-lick with a Steinway and while it's not close to the tone of that acoustic instrument, it did a surprisingly nice job.
Fantastic instrument!
I bought this instrument a number of months ago to replace my old Yamaha P115. I had done extensive research on every piano in this price range. The main complaint that I had read about was the shorter pivot point on the key bed, necessitated by the narrow width of the instrument.
I grew up playing classical music on grand pianos, and was a little concerned about that, but I'm gonna be honest- it's absolutely terrific! The piano sounds are amazing, and many of the other sounds are wonderful as well! I use it to gig with, and it's unbelievably light to carry around!
I was playing it the other night at a function, and after I finished, I happened to hear a nearby band warming up. They were a phenomenally talented band from Myrtle Beach, and I noticed that the piano sound that I heard in the mix was really great! I went up to the pianist and asked him what keyboard he was using, and come to find out it was the exact same keyboard! He said he normally used a Nord, but this keyboard was being borrowed from someone else in the band- I was astonished at how realistic it sounded, and when I heard it, I honestly was expecting to see that it was a higher end Kawai or much more expensive stage piano!
Don't let anyone shame you out of getting a Casio! They have definitely upped their game! Obviously, the action is not identical to playing on a grand, but I've got a Yamaha grand to practice on for a more authentic feel. For gigging, I don't think you can get much better than this for the money, especially when you consider all of the sounds, which I really believe are also much better than people sometimes give them credit for, especially through a high-end sound system!

Many of the keyboardists here at Sweetwater have fond memories of Casio that go all the way back to when we first started playing, and that's often kept us coming back for decades. Today, we're happy to point players to Casio keyboards, no matter how long they've been playing - even if they've never played at all. In fact, we've set up many beginners with Casio LK series Lighted-key models, and they've regularly raved about how easy these keyboards make learning. Likewise, several of the solo performers at Sweetwater swear by their fully loaded Privia and other advanced lines, which provide top-notch accompaniment and more. And if you stop by the Sweetwater Piano Showroom, we'll be happy to show you the latest Casio home piano - all providing amazing value and style.
