Violin String FAQs

Still searching for the strings to help you reach your violin goals? Here are answers to frequently asked questions.

What are violin strings made of?

Despite the myth that ancient violin strings were once made of cat gut, there’s little evidence to support this. That said, it is true that modern violin strings can still be found made from the ethically sourced small intestines of sheep, goats, or cattle. The appeal? Some classical players still swear by the rich, heirloom tone and bow response of gut strings.

Fortunately, the sky’s the limit when it comes to violin string options. Metal alloys, synthetics, nylon, and even animal gut — there’s no limit to the tones and responses to be found in your next set of strings. For more information, see Sweetwater’s orchestral string material comparison.

How many strings does a violin have?

Standard violins feature four strings tuned G–D–A–E (similar to a guitar, but in reverse). You may also spot players performing with 5-string and 6-string violins — which add a low C and a low F string, respectively — although these are far less common.

What notes are violin strings tuned to?

Modern 4-string violins are tuned in perfect fifths, the most common note values being (low to high) G3, D4, A4, and E5.
