Clarinet Reeds 101: Everything You Need to Know
As any clarinetist who’s been around the block can tell you: finding the right reeds can make all the difference in one’s learning journey. In fact, not having the right reeds often contributes to new students burning out and giving up.
Are you still searching for your perfect match? In this guide, we’re breaking down common questions about clarinet reeds in order to help you feel confident in your next reed purchase. So, put on your “reeding” glasses and get ready to “reed” between the lines as we explore which clarinet reeds are a cut above the rest at Sweetwater.
What Are the Best Reeds for Clarinet?
Ask 100 clarinetists their favorite reeds, and you may get 100 different answers. Factors such as skill level, playing style, clarinet type, and breath support all play a role in selecting the best reed for your instrument.
That said, if you’re a newer player who’s looking for guidelines, here are some recommendations from our in-house clarinet specialists:
- Reed strength: First-year clarinet players are often advised to start with softer reeds (2.0 being a safe choice) since they require less air and embouchure strength to produce sound. Intermediate players seeking a richer, fuller tone should graduate up to a medium reed strength (2.5 to 3.5) once they get better at using their air and are ready to integrate into ensembles. Pro players may eventually opt for harder clarinet reeds (4.0 and up), as their increased resistance leads to the fullest level of control in higher registers.
- Reed material: Natural cane is the standard in clarinet reeds due to its familiar sound and vibrational patterns. However, cane reeds do have their drawbacks: they require soaking to reach optimal moisture levels and must be properly cared for to retain their performance. Players who prefer a lower-maintenance option may want to consider synthetic clarinet reeds. Although costlier than cane, synthetic reeds are impervious to environmental factors like warping and drying. They also tend to last quite a bit longer.
- Reed cut: The cut/filing of a reed is believed to influence its tone and response. Filed reeds, once known as “French Cut” due to their country of origin, are reeds that have had the bark surrounding their vamps filed down; this is said to produce a purer tone best suited to classical music. Unfiled reeds, formerly called “American Cut” for the same reason above, are said to impart a richer harmonic coloration, which is why they’re often used in jazz.
How Long Should Clarinet Reeds Last?
For maximum reed life and consistency, most clarinet players will cycle through a box of three, five, or 10 reeds on a daily rotation. A box in careful rotation like this typically offers one to two months of top performance, although your mileage may vary depending on playing frequency. Just be sure to store your cane reeds in a vented reed case, or you may encounter environmental damage. A box of synthetic clarinet reeds may offer months or years of performance if you’re faithful about rotating.
