About Bongos

Bongo drums are one of the most popular percussion instruments out there. Whether you're a professional percussionist or just learning how to play the bongos, our selection at Sweetwater offers a range of quality drums to suit various playing levels, styles, and performance demands.

Bongo shells and heads

Bongos typically come in a set that includes two drums of different sizes. Traditionally, bongo shells are usually made from wood, with an animal skin head. At Sweetwater, we're proud to carry an extensive selection of bongos for you to choose from, with bodies and heads made from various materials. If you want something elegant and durable, most of our top bongos are made from siam oak (the wood of the rubber tree, harvested when the trees are no longer producing latex). We also offer bongos made from other types of hardwood, such as ash.

Heads are typically rawhide or goatskin; some of our bongos even feature extra-tough buffalo skin heads. All of our bongos have a protective finish, which strengthens the material of the body and ensures beautiful endurance and longevity for your instrument. For added protection, take a look at our bongo bags. These protect and secure your instruments while at the same time making them easier to carry with you!

EZ-Curve: the secret to extra comfort

Any experienced percussionist can tell you just how these instruments can be on the hands, especially when you're just starting out. If you're looking for comfort, grab one of our bongos with EZ-Curve rims which are designed to reduce discomfort in your hands and enable you to play for hours without trouble.

New textures await in bongo cajons

Are you into Latin beats? Sweetwater also carries bongo cajons! Cajons are box-shaped instruments used in Latin music, and bongo cajons offer an inventive combination of the driving, spicy tone of cajons and the fun playability of the bongo. Enjoy the punchy, deeper tones of the cajon coupled with sharper bongo-style sounds. With both high- and low-pitched surfaces, these instruments provide amazing tonal versatility. Plus, because the bongo cajon is small and lightweight, you can take it anywhere with you, making it a popular choice for traveling musicians and buskers.

Synthetic versus rawhide bongo heads: which is better?

Do you already have bongos and just need to replace a head or two? Whether your bongo head wore out or you want to achieve a higher-quality sound, replacing your bongo head is a great idea. Our selection includes synthetic heads which offer all the advantages of natural skin with none of the downsides. Our synthetic bongo heads help you achieve better pitch stability while making your instrument more weather-resistant at the same time.
