When buying mandolin strings, you must keep in mind that there is no one string set that will suit every mandolin and every player. Different mandolins, playing styles, and genres demand different strings. But if you want to restore your mandolin's sparkle or experiment with something new, Sweetwater carries a variety of string styles that will deliver the sonic brilliance you’re looking for.

The most important factor to consider when choosing mandolin strings is the gauge. "Gauge" refers to the thickness of the string, and different thicknesses offer different advantages. Are you a beginner player? Then lighter strings are the better choice for you, since they’re easier on the fingers and are generally easier to play. They provide a bright and smooth sound. Lighter strings are also recommended if you play on an older mandolin.

If you want more volume and sustain, then check out our heavier strings! They are a bit more difficult to play, but they can bring out all the tonal richness that your mandolin can offer. The material of your strings can impact their lifespan. If you’re looking for extra longevity, get ones made of phosphor bronze. If you’re an electric mandolin player, get nickel plated steel strings, which are typically brighter, and if you’re looking for durability plus clarity, grab nickel bronze strings.
