An EQ Standard, For More Than 40 Years

The API 550A is a true classic — an EQ that's been embraced since the late 60s, and a standard by which countless EQs have been judged. Here, reissued in 2004 in its original modular form (after a long, highly anticipated wait), the API 550A puts a piece of music history into your 500 Series chassis. It offers 3-bands of simply classic API equalization, with 5 API-chosen frequency centers available on each band. Thanks to the traditional API fully discrete design, you'll enjoy high headroom, lasting quality, and unbelievable sound from the API 550A.

A true classic, reintroduced in 2004 by popular demand

Few equalizers enjoy the respect and admiration of the coveted API 550A. Designed by the now legendary Saul Walker in the late 60s, the discrete 550A was first used as a modular OEM equalizer. As the industry rapidly embraced the sonic quality of the 550A, it quickly found its way into many custom console designs by Frank DeMedio and other leading engineers. Many of these consoles are still in use today. Forty years later, the 550A remains the standard against which countless EQs are measured, and it has played a major role in the recording industry for decades. Imitated but never duplicated, the 550A became API's standard channel module EQ when the company began manufacturing consoles in 1971. With virtually all existing units spoken for, popular demand for this EQ resulted in API finally resuming production of the API 550A in 2004.

Gives you an amazing level of control

The API 550A provides reciprocal equalization at 21 points in 5 steps of boost to a maximum of 12dB of gain at each point. The fifteen equalization points are divided into three overlapping ranges. The high- and low-frequency ranges are individually selectable as either peaking or shelving, and a band-pass filter may be inserted independently of all other selected equalization settings. Frequency ranges and boost/cut are selected by three dual-concentric switches, and a pushbutton "in" switch allows the EQ to be silently introduced to the signal path. A small toggle switch is used to insert the band-pass filter into the 550A.

API's 500 Series: Long-term flexibility, lasting value

The beauty of the entire API 500 Series is its long-term flexibility and lasting value — especially when you consider that needs change over time. With a range of mounting frame options, the API 550A will be a valuable asset to your ever-changing studio rigs. It's also ruggedly designed with sound you just won't outgrow — crafted to be your sonic partner for year after year after year.

API 550A 500 Series Modular 3-band Equalizer Features:

  • 3 bands of classic API equalization
  • Each band offers 7 API-selected frequency centers
  • Reciprocal and repeatable filtering
  • Maximum 12dB of boost/cut per band
  • EQ Band 1 and 3 offer shelf/peak switching

Best Tracking/Channel EQ

The great thing about the API550a is it always sounds good anything. It is my EQ of choice for improving or sweetening a track. Really shines on guitars... never sounds unnatural or phasey. Yes -- it is better than the plugins. I have some other outboard EQs too, but this one is my first choice for tracking or to sweeten a track during mix down.

550a - the hardware difference.

I A/B compared this with the Waves plug. The low frequencies showed similarities, and the plug seemed like a cleaner version of the hardware. From 300hz and up, the API 550a proved warmer and rounder than the comparatively flat Waves plugin. No source revealed this better than some dirty electric guitars. At matched settings, the Waves plug exhibited a bright, clear sound. The hardware 550a transformed the guitar into a warmer, more harmonically rich track that sat in the mix while remaining present. The guitar was still punchy, but softer around the harsh edges where the plug left it harsh by comparison.
As for the build quality, I don't think it could be more solid, and the design is actually very, very aesthetically impressive in person.
I gave it a 4.5 instead of 5 because the top is a little strident. That's the only complaint.
Preferred uses: Everything except lead vocals, but it absolutely owns overdriven electric guitars.
I could see the plug handing the hardware's job on a kick drum in a busy mix, but that's about it. If you like the plugs, the hardware is going to blow your mind.

Musical........very musical......warm

Dial the frequencies and boost on this EQ and you immediatle perceive the warmth. This is the best EQ I have ever used........so simple to operate yet so much sound from it. You will not be dissapointed........worth every penny.

Not my cup of tea

It's built like a tank, works flawlessly and looks gorgeous.

But for some reason its sound does not impress me, I prefer SSL, old neves and new RNDs and the much cheaper Electra from Kush.

The 2db steps in the gain knobs are sometimes too much o too little.

API Reissue

Compared to the vintage API gear the reissued is as close as you can get. That is not a bad thing! The 550A is no exception. The 550A is clear and punchy and can boost or attenuate drastic or subtle with its sweepable indented concentric knobs. There are sweet spots on this unit, but not with the same settings as the vintage 550. In a word, the reissue is slightly different. However, it still retains the punchy vibrant sound of API. Get ready for the new series of API. I welcome it with open arms. Grab a few of these for your lunchbox.
