A Tour-grade, TOM-equipped Axe Worthy of the EVH Marque

When EVH-approved axe slinging meets high-flashpoint performance and tour-grade reinforcements, only one searing 6-string will do: the EVH Wolfgang Special Tuna-Matic. Road-tested and ready to rip, this gig-worthy instrument has everything you need to make it your on-the-road number one. This spin on the Wolfgang Special offers a distinct yet dynamic option for pliable performance via an EVH TOM-style bridge. Its solid basswood body — the perfect conduit for its tone-infused, cradle-rocking EVH Wolfgang humbuckers — anchors your sound, methodically contoured and shaped to accommodate virtually any player with ease. You'll be enraptured by the just-right feel of this special neck, crafted from a quarter-sawn slab of baked maple, reinforced with graphite rods, guaranteeing road-faring calibers of lightning-fast playability, all over its compound-radius fretboard. Sweetwater’s session-focused 6-stringers know what it's worth, and the Wolfgang Special Tuna-Matic offers the best of both worlds: EVH-approved performance possibilities and unfettered travel-grade flexibility.

The consummate performance-centric guitar

If you're searching for the perfect platform for hitting the road with your fretboard wizardry, you're in the right place. The Wolfgang Special is a bona fide tour-caliber axe. This guitar delivers a growling, mid-forward acoustic tone centered around a solid basswood body with enough definition to cut through a hard-rocking band. Beyond that, the Wolfgang Special’s bolt-on maple neck boasts a smooth, oiled feel, quarter-sawn and baked, giving way to a fast-playing compound-radius fretboard, giving you 22 frets of firepower that’ll have you ready to “Finish What Ya Started.”

Scorching-hot, direct-mount EVH Wolfgang pickups

The EVH Wolfgang Special comes equipped with direct-mount Wolfgang humbuckers. These scorching-hot pickups offer a first-class ticket to Edward Van Halen's elusive tone. We'll give you fair warning: plug this solidbody electric guitar into your high-gain amplifier of choice, and you'll be bowled over with singing highs, snarling mids, and fat lows — a.k.a., the legendary brown sound — with all the amp-punishing output you can handle. The Wolfgang Special includes a volume knob, outfitted with a 500K EVH Bourns Low Friction Pot; a treble-bleed circuit to maintain shimmering highs at low settings; plus a tone knob anchored to an EVH Bourns high friction pot. Add in the 3-way pickup toggle switch, and the Wolfgang Special is rife with sound-crafting dynamism worthy of Eddie’s penchant for aural exploration.

Pliable power and premier performance panache

While few things are as synonymous as King Edward and the Floyd Rose double-locking trem, opting for a TOM-style bridge on this Wolfgang Standard Tuna-Matic is as much of an ode to the late legend’s expressivity as the Floyd — it’s just a different type of performance pyrotechnics. Up top, a 3-by-3 set of EVH tuners bookend the strings’ 25.5-inch scale, working with the bridge to keep your sounds buzz-free and in tune, with rock-solid intonation to boot. But playability contains multitudes, and the use of baked maple in both the fretboard and neck goes beyond the aged-like tones they yield. Unlike standard maple, baked maple has greater dimensional stability, making this 6-string far more resilient to twisting or warping. Moreover, these same properties multiply in their sonic and structural reinforcement, thanks to not only the maple itself being a quarter-sawn slice of timber, but the use of graphite reinforcement rods. As a result, you'll spend less time at the workbench and more time getting “Unchained” with your axe.

EVH Wolfgang Special Tuna-Matic Features:

  • Solid basswood body exhibits a growling acoustic tone with loads of mids
  • Comfortable bolt-on baked maple neck boasts a nice, oiled feel
  • Fast-playing 12–16-in. compound-radius 22-fret baked quarter-sawn maple fingerboard
  • Graphite reinforcement rods in the neck augment sustain and stability
  • EVH Wolfgang humbucking pickups deliver singing highs, snarling mids, fat lows, and plenty of amp-punishing output
  • Volume knob includes a treble-bleed circuit to maintain shimmering highs at low settings
  • Onboard TOM-style bridge supplies plenty of tuning stability and expressive potential
  • Use of baked maple in the neck maximizes dimensional stability, reducing the risk of warping, twisting, or environmental wear and tear
  • Eye-grabbing gold hardware includes fine-tuner tailpiece that's teeming with style

Reviews

Love it!
It's a rock machine! Beautiful neck, great pickups, outstanding tone, and the oxblood finish is stellar! Everything you need and nothing you don't. Top it off with a great setup from the Sweetwater crew and you're ready to go!
Music background: Active Musician
Very nice, comfortable to play guitar.
This is the second EVH Wolfgang Special guitar I now own, the first being the model with a Floyd Rose and D-Tuna. I Really like the first guitar, I just honestly don't use the Tremolo that much on that one, and wanted an EVH without a Floyd. I had seen images of Eddie playing one of his Wolfgangs with a TOM bridge, and had hopes that eventually the EVH brand would make that model at more affordable price, and the finally did!

I ordered the Oxblood colored model, and I must say, the Sweetwater photo gallery does not do justice to just how visually stunning the color is in person! With the baked maple neck and gold hardware, this is a beautiful guitar!

This guitar arrived absolutely flawless in cosmetic fit and finish. The action was a bit high for my tasted right out of the case, a small truss rod adjustment solved that issue for me. Reality check for those out there that believe a guitar is going to get to you perfectly set up to your needs straight out of the box... It isn't. Mine spent 7 days in the trailer of a Fedex truck going cross country, in summer temperatures. That has an effect on the wood, and things can shift and settle, so some set-up is going to be expected.

That being said, I got this guitar all dialed in to my liking, and I love it! The geometry of of the Wolfgang Specials are very similar to that of a Les Paul, which makes this guitar very comfortable to play. It has a light resonant body with plenty of sustain. I compare this guitar a lot to the Les Paul standard I have. Both are great guitars, but the EVH is more comfortable to play, the neck is smoother and feels worn in already, the neck access is better, it's lighter in weight, and it stays in tune better.

The pick-ups are really nice and warm sounding and are comparable to the pick-ups in my Les Paul. The differences being that The Wolfgang Pick-ups are cleaner and clearer sounding and don't get muddy in the neck position.

Some people may not understand the logic of having Fine-tuners on TOM tail-piece. But once you start using them you will understand how much quicker you can fine tune the guitar with them. You can pluck the string you need to tune with the same hand as you tune it, and not have to reach for the tuning keys with your other hand. It's way quicker and more accurate.

All in all, this is a fantastic guitar! You can shred like Ed on it if that's your liking, but it's versatile enough to play just about anything with it.
