Conjure Ambient Realms with One Simple Reverb!

Back in the day, guitarists combined multiple pedals in nightmarishly long signal chains to achieve ambient tones. With the Fundamental Ambient reverb pedal from Walrus Audio, those days are over! This savvy soundscape stompbox shrinks the power of multiple spatial effects into one compact device, complete with three reverb algorithms for soundscapes, atmospherics, and sustained washes of sound. Three modes — Deep, Lush, and Haze — provide options ranging from transparent studio hi-fi to lo-fi grit. To ensure you can find the right ambient tone for any occasion, the pedal's three slider controls (Mix, Decay, and Tone) behave differently in each mode. With the Walrus Audio Fundamental Ambient from Sweetwater, you can lose yourself in ambience while preserving valuable pedalboard real estate!

Deep, Lush, or Haze?

This pedal equips you with three highly customizable modes — the Lush and Haze modes even offer conventional reverb tones with Mix and Decay kept at lower settings! No matter which mode catches your attention, hardlining the Mix control is a ticket to cavernous realms packed with texture and feel. With the Slide Switch set to Haze, the tone slider controls a resonant bandpass filter's highs and lows, offering distinct lo-fi flair ranging from vintage AM radio crackle to experimental zest.

  • Deep: wide, rich reverb with an additional low-frequency octave creating washes of primordial sound
  • Lush: bright and crystalline with lasting sustain, suitable for slow strum soundscapes and single-note runs
  • Haze: gritty lo-fi character transforms your signal with slight distortion and a synth-like resonant tone control

Fast decay trail switching!

Walrus Audio lets you determine how the Fundamental Ambient behaves when the active pedal is bypassed. You can opt for trails that decay naturally after a press of the footswitch, or you can select no trails for an instantaneous cutoff — perfect for dramatic transitions! What's more, players typically must remove a pedal's back plate to access such functions, but Walrus makes the task simple! A long press of the Ambient's footswitch is all it takes to change trail modes, which unlocks more ways to deploy the Ambient Reverb onstage as part of your set.

Reviews

Walrus Ambient
Bought this product to use with my Sho-Bud pedal steel. It absolutely exceeded my expectations. Variations from subtle effects to more dynamic settings allow satisfying mixes for any situation.
Versatile and Inexpensive
I'm sure most are using this in a full electric rig but honestly I am a worship leader and acoustic player. I typically play dry and with a full band. Having this pedal has honestly breathed a breath of fresh air in my own personal playing. I typically only play for a set and this has inspired me to play for fun again. I recommend this to anyone looking for a full bodied ambient sound that fills the space and allows creativity.

Big sound in a small and convenient package
I've been playing acoustic for over 50 years, and have a chord melody style of playing. I make a lot of chords, but I don't play a lot of chords in the traditional sense. I'm more of a note player, and use chords more as a means of arriving at the notes I want to play. I play mostly fingerstyle, and almost always solo.

For a while, I'd been looking for a larger ambient effect for some occasional isolated songs. One example is an annual tradition of playing "Silent Night" on Christmas Eve, which I do as a full solo instrumental. There are larger and much more expensive pedals that could do the job, but the cost was difficult to justify. I wouldn't have used one often enough, and the size and inconvenience made them less than practical.

When the Fundamental Ambient came out, I was intrigued. The cost was much easier to justify, and it fit the bill for a lot of practical criteria. I could stick it in a pocket, power it with a standard 9V wall-wort, and get the effect I was seeking with few adjustments. There was no menu diving, no knobs that were also buttons, secondary functions, or other learning curves.

I'll confess to a degree of skepticism. Usually the "DSP's" in big ambience pedals leave room for many adjustments. I didn't necessarily expect it to get me where I wanted, with the level of simplicity it was clearly offering. I had some simple criteria, but it was also quite specific. I was therefore taking a degree of risk.

I wanted my melodic notes to be separate from any ambient pads underneath them. I didn't want a big wash of ambience that just made pretty sounds, without allowing me to play a clear melody over it. I didn't want it to sound overly artificial, just big, and I wanted a way to tame the trebly highs that are common in the trails of big ambience affects.

I have to say, Walrus was successful in accomplishing those things. They just seemed to find the sweet spot. This pedal does fit a certain niche. If that's the niche you're seeking however, this can really fit the bill. It's very easy to get where I want to be, and I can focus more on playing than adjusting. If you're looking for a tweakers paradise, look elsewhere. This pedal is for those who wish to avoid that, and just get to the point. After that, you can put it away for a while, and only feel like you're shelving a purchase instead of an investment. A big challenge in my opinion, but Walrus lived up to it.

Walrus Fundamental Ambience
I want to use it mostly for sound effects as I'm not that great a musician. So far I really like the effects and you can't go wrong with the price. :-)
