Impeccable Re-creation of a Timeless Microphone

Whether we’re talking about looks or sound, the ribbon mics of the 1930s are some of the most immediately identifiable mics of all-time — and Warm Audio has impeccably recreated both for their WA-44 studio ribbon microphone. Just like the originals, the WA-44 delivers rich, warm tone that epitomizes “classic” ribbon character. Its bidirectional polar pattern provides exceptional off-axis rejection while its custom, vintage-matched ribbon and robust neodymium magnet work in tandem with a custom CineMag USA-made transformer to deliver lush mids, a rolled-off top end, and the pronounced proximity effect that ribbons are known and prized for. Inspected and tested by Warm Audio, the WA-44 is the perfect choice for capturing lead tones on vocals, horns, acoustics, drums, piano, voice work, and so much more.

Arguably the most famous broadcast mic of all time

Listen to any classic recording or radio broadcast, and there’s a good chance that you’re hearing an authentic 44 microphone. Heck, some scoring studios and radio stations still use them today! The Warm Audio WA-44 conscientiously reproduces all the detail and nuance that made the original version of the ribbon mic one of the most famous broadcast microphones of all time — rich proximity effect, tamed high end, and mid-range presence.

Vintage sound with modern components

While the sound of the WA-44 oozes that coveted vintage panache, it’s made from only the best of modern components. These include the namesake 2.5-micron-thick ribbon, which is made from more than 99% aluminum. Additionally, powering the WA-44’s potent neodymium magnet is a custom US-made CineMag transformer. Finally, the included Star-Quad shielded Gotham XLR cable ensures that your sounds reach your interface with only the finest audio representation.

Certain to be a contemporary studio workhorse

The 44 microphones of yesteryear may have been destined to become the mics for broadcast, but the WA-44 of today is all but guaranteed to become your new studio workhorse. Its narrow bidirectional (figure-8) polar pattern gives your source a focused sound with its fantastic off-axis rejection, and its huge frequency response plus high max SPL make the WA-44 an excellent choice not only for voice, but also drums and cymbals, strings, horns, piano, and much more.

Warm Audio WA-44 Studio Ribbon Microphone Features:

  • Faithful re-creation of the most iconic broadcast ribbon mic of all-time
  • Rich proximity effect brings out the low end, making it sound bold and authoritative on vocals for both speech and music
  • Rolled-off top end tames harshness for a smooth, natural sound on vocals, drums and cymbals, horns, strings, piano, and much more
  • Tight bidirectional (figure-8) polar pattern provides superb off-axis rejection and gives your source a focused sound
  • Made from top-quality premium components: strong Neodymium magnet powered by a USA-made CineMag transformer and a 99.1% aluminum ribbon that is 2.5-microns thick
  • Includes a Star-Quad shielded Gotham XLR cable and embroidered case
  • 20Hz–20kHz frequency response (+/- 12db) captures every nuance and detail
  • 140dB max SPL enables it to handle loud sound sources with ease

Reviews

I love this thing
I love this mic. I'm an audiobook narrator and have been using the top of the line condenser microphone for years. Wanted to see what a ribbon mic would do in my home studio environment. Really polished and smoothed out my voice nicely, not so bright. Reduced the amount of mouth noise I'd spend a good deal of time editing out. It is a beast, had to get a locking boom arm to hold the 6lbs. Ya it's shoebox size, but I just love this thing! Also the sweet spot is a tad further back at 8"-9" so I don't feel so jammed up. Again simply for audiobook work here.
What's that!
I heard "what's that?!" from a client when they saw the WA44. I was on the fence -and I must admit it was because of the brand. This is my first, "I'm not sending it back" time with this co. I keep sticking my finger in the socket hoping something different will happen other than being electrocuted... Finally did with the WA44. I was shocked at how smooth, silky, and robust it treated my vocals. It's not suited for everything but with that said, it is extremely versatile. Cabs, Vox, strings, you name it. I would use it for rock vocal but opera would work a charm! For ballads this is as effective as a 49 tube. Different sound but same vibe. Oh yeah, the build is out of this world. You'll need a Latch Lake stand for this one. Or bolt the another stand to the floor. lol
Happy recording!

Superb Built Quality
I was able to shoot this mic out against an original RCA 44BX. We were supposed to get an AEA in as well, but unfortunately schedules didn't align. Here's the deal: The mic is a beast. The build quality is incredible, especially for the money, which is where most of the money is going, the metal work. The motor construction and transformer choices were extremely well executed. Overall, the mic is slightly LARGER than an original RCA 44BX. Its close enough, though, that the overall tonality of the mic is preserved pretty well. Like all vintage ribbon mics, they all have a unique sound to them. So the RCAs that I had to test against probably had a degree of difference between each other that was comparable to the difference between either of them and the WA-44. The sound can speak to its flavor better than words can. Check out the video, we put it up on piano, electric guitar, upright bass, drum room and with male and female vocals. This is an incredible mic for the money. Bravo Warm!

Warm Audio did it again!
I have become somewhat of a WA fan boy. It started with the WA47, then preamps, compressors and eqs. Then there was the WA47F and now this beautiful heavy as heck mic. Listen, I'm not afraid to buy more expensive gear, but talking with my candy dealer, Mike C., never steers me in the wrong direction. Other similar mics are 3 and 4 times the price, and I'm not sure they are 3 or 4 times "better". How do I describe what I have recorded already in my short time with this mic... BUTTER! It won't be the answer for everything, but it's a nice addition to the Mic Locker, and it didn't cause a divorce!
Music background: I'm only a "professional" because I've made monet playing and recording. 35+ years practicing to be better
Warm Audio WA44
Warm Audio hit a home run with this microphone. This microphone is great for a very mellow sound it would be great for pod casting. This microphone sounds just as good as those old RCA BX44s. This microphone is a must have for the microphone collector.
