The Authoritative Sound of a Legendary Mic

You've heard it on countless hit records. We're talking about the legendary FET47. Its ability to capture the full power and sheer weight of kick drums, upright bass, and rock vocals remains unchallenged to this day. An original FET47 — if you could find one in working condition — would cost you a small fortune. Sweetwater is excited to present the United Studio Technologies UT FET47, a meticulous re-creation of the classic FET47, quality crafted in the USA with fanatical attention to detail. Now with the UT FET47 in your mic locker, you can have the authoritative voice of this coveted mic at a price that will leave room for a nice preamp!

Heiserman Designed Capsule

For the UT FET47, United Studio Technologies worked with renowned capsule designer Eric Heiserman to develop a fresh take on the classic German K47 capsule design. Eric collaborated with the United team and their capsule manufacturer to develop a new capsule from the ground up. The result is a capsule that sounds open, articulate, and three dimensional — arguably more so than the original. The design process involved the analysis of everything from the sourced Mylar to the screw threads; but after many iterations — and subjective listening tests, the finalized HZ Series capsule design delivered everything the capsule team had hoped for. And then some.

Stringent Quality Control

While many of the HZ Series design elements remain trade secrets, one superior attribute the team can share is the use of dual matched backplates. The HZ Series matching process enables far more consistent and accurate quality from side-to-side and capsule-to-capsule. The HZ Series capsule is manufactured in small batches, with stringent quality control, instrument testing, and subjective listening tests.

Custom Cinemag Transformer

United Studio Technologies auditioned many re-creations of the original FET47 German transformer, but quickly settled on an exceptional design from Cinemag Transformers of California. Their take on this classic, critical component is truly a work of art: a large, beefy transformer made from a striped core of interleaved sets of high nickel and steel laminations and wound to original specs. Cinemag‘s “humbucking” design delivers clean, quiet operation in any and all conditions. While United could have used smaller or less pricey transformer; compromise was never an option. The Cinemag transformer truly makes a huge difference in delivering the authoritative sound of a legend.

Reviews

BEAST of a mic
This mic "does the thing". I cannot make this mic sound bad... i don't think its possible!
My favorite uses (so far) are lead vocals and kick, though... if i had a pair, acoustic gtr & rooms would cross my mind!

Its got the sound and look of a Neumann at a quarter of the price, and I honestly consider this to be more of a workhorse than a "dedicated kick/bass mic". It punches way above its price tag, in a way that one cannot understand until they've recorded lots of FET47s... they don't get much love considering they're typically bunk-mates with U47s, U87s, 251s, and C12's. Its all about scale when it comes to your mic locker. Really.

This mic is seriously making me consider WHY every engineer uses FET47s only on kick and never on vocals or acoustic instruments. I pair the UT FET47 up with my Chandler REDD.47 and... its like magic. McCartney himself couldn't ask for a better chain, shy of spending fifteen to twenty thousand dollars on a preamp&mic combo... its silly. Get this mic, get a nice pre (1073 or tube), and go for it. Music ain't hard with great gear, and this is one of those pieces.

When your gear is this good, you kinda realize that you are the only thing standing in your way when it comes to making the music you "hear in your head".

I might buy another one soon. It rips.

even better than expected
sounds massive on kick drums
Killer microphone!
Well, I sure wasn't going to spend $... on a Neumann U47, so I waited to see what SOS had to say about this one and based on that review, I bought it. Wow! I am so impressed with the build quality and sound of this microphone. Honestly, I had only considered using it on the kick drum outside front head, but now I am going to use it on bass cabinets and perhaps more. I can definitely recommend this mic for your locker!
47 FET
This is an amazing microphone. Clear highs and warms lows. Perfect for recording my acoustic instruments and loud electric guitars. Definitely worth the money and it is an amazing value for a high end piece of gear. I love that they are handmade in the U.S.A
Superb Natural Capture - Huge bass - Takes EQ like a champ - Grab it!
This microphone is an accurate recorder that seems to serve the frequency preferences of our own ears. Harsh frequencies are reduced while "air" is retained. A lot of microphones have subtle "ringing" with overly expressed overtones in different frequency ranges. The Fet47 is noticeably flat in this sense, and that's a very very good thing considering how much our instrumentation and our vocals create jumpy overtones that are best smoothed out for high volume, immersive listening. I've recorded with Microtech Gefell, top-line Neumanns, Schoeps, and this mic is a touch warmer and less sensitive to high frequencies than the general class of expensive condensers I've used. It's also bassier. Those factors will actually make me reach for this mic first, just to soften the digital process, a little like tape used to. Now, once we have a smooth warm capture, a slight EQ shelf boost of .2-.5db above 500hz really opens up the tone incredibly. In that sense this mic is something between a condenser mic and a ribbon mic, since many ribbons often benefit from some higher frequency boost. Like great mics of old, this is not such a point-and-shoot microphone. It has a substantial proximity effect. Slightly different positions will give you not-slightly different low frequency capture - and incidentally, bass recording on this mic is exquisite. So you do have to know how to use it. I run this mic through a vintage germanium preamp and a tube line amp; or through a Neve channel. The old style channels gives me a slightly pillowy tone that really softens the digital playback. Going through the Neve sounds clear and beautiful. Overall, this mic is a god-send to people who love crafting exquisite audio, to studio starters, bedroom musicians, fans of classic tone, and singers who can use some sibilance tamed. Its warmth makes it basically friendly with any source, and it can set you up for finding perfect balance with a stroke of EQ. Amazing. Love it! Get you one!
