Outstanding Tenor Ukulele from Gretsch

Gretsch Guitars brings their luthier mastery to the world of ukuleles with the G9120 Tenor Standard Ukulele. Featuring a laminated mahogany top and body with an ovangkol fingerboard, this beautifully designed uke delivers great tone and feel. An ovangkol bridge and genuine bone nut and saddle provide even more resonance and tone support — features uke enthusiasts here at Sweetwater really appreciate.

Tonewoods and Gretsch’s open-pore finish

The Gretsch G9120 ukulele’s organically warm tone comes courtesy of its mahogany top, back, and sides. The mahogany neck and ovangkol fingerboard are an ideal combination for optimizing the transfer of energy from the strings to the body, for a deep and rich sound. Gretsch’s natural open-pore semi-gloss finish enhances the G9120’s tone while providing it with understated good looks.

Gretsch legacy in American music

The Gretsch G9120 ukulele transports you back to Gretsch’s roots in American music. Everyone knows Gretsch electric guitars and drums, but did you know that they got their start in 1883 as a banjo company? It wasn’t long before Gretsch was making mandolins, ukuleles, and eventually flat-top guitars, contributing to the very roots of American music. So when you pick up a Gretsch ukulele, you’re holding more than a great uke; you're holding a piece of American music history.

Gretsch G9120 Tenor Standard Ukulele Features:

  • Laminated mahogany top and body provide great uke tone
  • Mahogany neck with ovangkol fingerboard is beautifully responsive and comfortable
  • Ovangkol bridge and genuine bone saddle provide even more resonance and tone support
  • Pearloid dot inlays on fingerboard provide a classic look

Reviews

Quality construction

This came fast and well packed. This is a well built ukulele. This uke came a couple turns from in tune so tuning it was ez. The sound is very nice, I been playing a friend's concert uke ($) and this sounds better and it's easier to get a good strum. The strings are closer to the fret and the spacing makes finding chords easier for my xlarge hands. Love it

Music background: College level Percussionist, very little guitar and bass knowledge. Ukulele beginner.
Why the Gretsch G9120 is a great uke!
Here are five key reasons why the Gretsch G9120 tenor ukulele is a great uke:

1. The setup. Out of the box this uke was setup for a nice low action of 2mm at the 12th fret. The nut was also setup nice and low for easy chording at the first few frets making chords like the Bb a breeze to play. The only caveat with the setup was that there were two sharp fret ends that I needed to file myself. It's possible this might have been the result of a lack of humidity when it was stored in the warehouse. But no fret buzz or other major setup issues.

2. The sound. This thing has such a nice sound. It has a warm, sweet tone with good sustain and intonation. I fitted mine with a wound low G and absolutely love it. It chimes like a ukulele too with the Aquila super nylguts providing a nice contrast to the wound low G. I'm normally more a fan of fluorocarbon strings, but on this ukulele, the nylguts sound great. The thin laminate body outshines the sound of many solid body ukes I've owned over the years.

3. The neck. It has a chunky neck that is very comfortable to play. Even with the nut width being the standard 1 3/8", I still find it as easy to play as my ukes with a 1.5" nut.

4. The build quality. This is a very nicely built instrument. It's well balanced and has a clean build inside and out.

5. The looks. The retro look is cool without being ostentatious or blingy. It is purposely somewhat scruffy looking but I think Gretsch does a better job of the retro/lived-in look than Martin does with the Streetmaster ukulele. This uke has some mojo!

This is a great uke and one that I believe often gets overlooked and under appreciated. One more thing... it's easy and economical to replace the generic tuners on this uke with some high quality Grover geared tuners as the screw holes line up perfectly. I replaced mine with these Grover tuners: Grover 9NB Sta-Tite Geared Ukulele Tuners - Nickel with Black Buttons

$ is the difference between trash and an instrument
Wow. The Kala teak tri-tone at $ felt like something you'd get out of a cracker jack box, and couldn't tune or play in tune.

This Gretsch is a proper instrument. Tunes well, holds tune, sounds brilliant.
Do yourself a favor. spend the extra $, and get a real instrument. You won't be disappointed.

Did I mention the fretwork is phenomenal? I can't compare this against any other ukulele besides the kala teak, but as a guitar player this feels like the difference between a no-name import $ guitar on Amazon and a MIM Fender or mid-range Ibanez/PRS.
This is a great starter
This is my first ukuleke I ever got and it sounds beautiful and looks beautiful. Its comfortable to hold and is quite durable for accidents.
Great Ukelele
This is a great tenor ukulele. i have an Alvarez concert size that I started with and just wanted something a little larger and easier to hold and finger. I went with the Gretsch for several reasons. First, I watched several You Tube videos that compared tenor ukuleles and out of ten models the Gretsch was everyone's first or second pick. Second, I already have a Gretsch Electromatic hollow body guitar and a Gretsch metal body resonator guitar and I love them both. I also have two Fender's, a Gibson and a Sigma banjo so for me it wasn't just a Gretsch thing. The Gretsch quality did help but so did the solid mahogany and the walnut neck. And let us not forget the great people at Sweetwater from those who help us make our selections on the phone to those who inspect and set up our choices to those who expertly and carefully pack each purchase for us. Thanks for all you do.
