The Big Muff That Changed the World

Own the Muff that started it all — the Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff fuzz pedal is a faithful re-creation of the original '69 Big Muff pedal. Electro-Harmonix founder Mike Matthews says, "this reissue absolutely nails that creamy, violin-like sustain and musical tone at a price a working musician can afford.” It's the same singing tone heard on early '70s recordings by Santana, Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, and many others, and now you can have it in your own rig without scouring the net for a vintage original. Complete with an LED status indicator, true bypass switching, and your choice of 9-volt battery or optional AC power, the Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff reissue puts an iconic piece of guitar history on your pedalboard.

Classic Big Muff fuzz tones

A faithful re-creation of the original late '60s circuit, the Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff delivers a wide range of tones from its three simple controls. Guitarists at Sweetwater especially love the sweep of its Tone knob, which basically blends between lowpassed and highpassed splits of your signal. Fully counterclockwise, it sounds dark and brooding — fully clockwise sounds thin and focused. Somewhere in between, your ideal fuzz tone awaits.

Sounds Like Me
I play mostly clean but wanted a fuzz for occasional soloing. Being a devotee of Boss pedals (see pic) and trying to retain continuity, I checked out their Fuzz offering. It was a bit thin & grainy, imho. So #@!$ continuity and just get the best one out there.
There are currently 10 EHX Big Muffs available at Sweetwater and I looked at all of them. The Triangle was the clear winner because of its smoothness and versatility. It can get steely like the Ram's Head and it can be dark & grungy like the Russian with just a small tweak of the tone knob. It can do Gilmour, Hendrix, Santana & Clapton, but most importantly it can do Rob (that's me). Finding my own sound is incredibly easy with this little thing. And that sweet, smooth, violin-like sustain has to be heard to be appreciated. Sounds awesome through all my amps. The original is still the best.

Killer Fuzz Tones
This is a fantastic fuzz pedal and my favorite so far. It has that perfect fuzz sound that I've found hard to get from other pedals. I will note that this thing picks up ALL sounds coming through it, so be super quick on your volume knob when you need quiet.
Smooth Muff Sound
I love the sound of Electro-Harmonix Big Muff pedals. This was my first muff style fuzz pedal and I'm glad I bought it. Electro-Harmonix offers a tone of muff style pedals that all sound slightly different. I like the sound, price and size of this Big Muff. You can get that Pink Floyd David Gilmour type sound from this pedal for lead guitar. There seems to be differing opinions as to whether Gilmour used a Triangle Big Muff or a Rams Head Big Muff ——— he likely used both at different times in his career. I find the sound of those two pedals is very similar, but I find I like the Triangle just a bit more. This pedal has a smooth fuzz sound that isn't too harsh. The sound sits somewhere between the EHX Russian Big Muff and the EHX Rams Head Big Muff. It's a great size for a pedal board (just slightly smaller than a standard Boss style pedal). I highly recommend this pedal.
Just like I remember..
I had one of the original EHX BMpi from the early 70's. I didn't know it was used by Gilmore and others.. I just knew it sounded like what I wanted. But that was a long time ago and that BMpi has moved on. But, now, I find I want it back.. There were several to choose from, some with op-amps, some that don't even look like what I think of as a BMpi.. but I selected this one, the "Triangle".

I love the new size. You have to admit it's hard to get a lot of those larger sized pedals on a board. I really appreciate the small size of this pedal.

And the sound... smooooooth as I remember..
One Great Pie!
I will set aside all my other effects pedals just to play on this for at least an hour a day. This is by far my favorite out of all the Muffs! You'll get a stinging bright fuzz to a warm creamy fuzz and a lot in between! Dial it in to your preferred setting and let it rip!

When I first played through the new EHX Triangle fuzz reissue with my Telecaster, I was ecstatic! Lots of companies have tried to mimic the original triangle muffs but, they always lacked the smoothness that I liked. I love the iconic sound of the first generation of Big Muffs and EHX has successfully replicated those iconic tones. Smooth, creamy, velvety fuzz. Nothing too harsh. Just luscious vintage fuzz tones. I was happy to nail down some of my favorite David Gilmour tones with ease. It made my Telecaster sound larger than life and I couldn't be happier with the new reissue.
