Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff Reissued Fuzz Pedal Reviews

Fuzz Effects Pedal with Volume, Tone, and Sustain Controls

Own the Muff that started it all — the Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff fuzz pedal is a faithful re-creation of the original '69 Big Muff pedal. Electro-Harmonix founder Mike Matthews says, "this reissue absolutely nails that creamy, violin-like sustain and musical tone at a price a working musician can afford.” It's the same singing tone heard on early '70s recordings by Santana, Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, and many others, and now you can have it in your own rig without scouring the net for a vintage original. Complete with an LED status indicator, true bypass switching, and your choice of 9-volt battery or optional AC power, the Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff reissue puts an iconic piece of guitar history on your pedalboard.

Best Muff

By Bryce Parker from MONTICELLO, MN on November 10, 2023 Music Background: Worship Lead Guitar

This is the best big muff I have tried and it's hard to beat that price.

Fuzz City

By Dane from Oregon on November 10, 2023

A great fuzz pedal. The tone knob really works well...from smooth fuzz to nasty. Played smooth with an overdrive pedal and good reverb....great sounds.

I like a Big Muff

By Jim from Stone Mountain on May 8, 2023 Music Background: It’s what I do

Great sounding pedal from the mighty EHX.
Built like a tank.
Great lead tones with a Strat.
Pairing with a couple of LP with EMGs it can get monstrous!
My neighbors even say it sounds good!

Just buy it

By Sweetwater Customer on May 5, 2023

This is a fantastic muff! It sounds exactly like what you want a big muff to sound like! Just buy it you know you want it you know you need it!

Awesome sounding muff

To my ear it is the best sounding big muff especially at that price.

Triangle Big Muff

By Matt from Fayetteville, AR on October 5, 2022 Music Background: Worship

Wow. I've always toyed with the idea of getting a fuzz but was afraid lol. I looked around, listened to the Isley Brothers and Pink Floyd, and got inspired. I heard that they both used a Big Muff in a lot of their lead tones. Knowing that, I started researching each reissue. I was choosing between this and the Rams Head. I went to the internet and heard people say the triangle is smoother so I went with the triangle. I stack it; going Big Muff > Boss SD1 > Wet Effects > Cranked DRRI. It's glorious

Outstanding performance

By David from NJ on June 17, 2022

I have a love hate with fuzz pedals. I never liked them personally when I played them but on the classic recordings of Fripp , Santana , Hendrix and Pink Floyd I loved them. I was always more of an amp style distortion player but I saw EHX reissued these and tried the triangle. I threw a chorus and slight delay and I found a fuzz tone I am ecstatic about. Enough sustain for days , great tone , warm and crisp and not thin and weak ( like my previous experience with fuzz ) I can get sludge when I need it but this pedal is perfect for layering lines and creating some interesting textures and soundscapes. I highly recommend it . Not good for tapping and sweeping style but for atmospheric guitar works like a dream.

Sounds Like Me

By Rob W from NC on May 8, 2022 Music Background: 40+ Years Experience

I play mostly clean but wanted a fuzz for occasional soloing. Being a devotee of Boss pedals (see pic) and trying to retain continuity, I checked out their Fuzz offering. It was a bit thin & grainy, imho. So #@!$ continuity and just get the best one out there.
There are currently 10 EHX Big Muffs available at Sweetwater and I looked at all of them. The Triangle was the clear winner because of its smoothness and versatility. It can get steely like the Ram's Head and it can be dark & grungy like the Russian with just a small tweak of the tone knob. It can do Gilmour, Hendrix, Santana & Clapton, but most importantly it can do Rob (that's me). Finding my own sound is incredibly easy with this little thing. And that sweet, smooth, violin-like sustain has to be heard to be appreciated. Sounds awesome through all my amps. The original is still the best.

Fat & Sustain

By Koobs from Colorado on January 19, 2022 Music Background: Old School Rocker

Great pedal, it gives me that thick, wicked, fuzz tone I was searching for in the style of Hendrix, Page, Clapton, and Gary Moore. Also, the fact that I can hold a note and it sustains itself for a long time is fantastic.

Triangle Big Muff

By Papa Joe from Gilbert, AZ on October 8, 2021 Music Background: Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, some lead.

Nice distinctive fuzz yet clean and not muddy, unless you want it to be. It's a keeper and I can see it's gonna be fun at the jams.

Fat tone

By Grant from Washington state on January 7, 2021 Music Background: Experienced

I usually don't like fuzz pedals, but I love this one! I use it for lead playing, makes the notes sound nice and fat. Sounds great with Gibson sg AND fender Strat thru my Marshall. A must have in my opinion

Classic fuzz

By John from Michigan on November 2, 2020 Music Background: Folk, pop, rock, country, songwriting for many years. Charted a song on country hot 100 in 1987.

I'm showing my age here, but check out Tony Peluso's guitar solo on The Carpenters "Goodbye to Love" for a perfect example of the beauty of this stomp box. This effect is beautiful in a mellow song context, as well as the edgier Jimi Hendrix style. It provides a pleasing effect without the massive volume and gain of the ear-shattering metal era. Notes and chords remain well defined at any volume level. There are many options for boosting gain at survivable noise levels (including marriage survival) such as Tube Screamer and countless overdrive options, but the Big Muff remains a distinctive and pleasing option for occasional flavoring in the right song context. The price is right, controls are super simple, and it occupies a small space on your pedal board.I love it!

Big Muff triangle

By Dennis from Sanders on April 29, 2020 Music Background: Playing guitar for almost 50 years.

I bought this pedal based on using the original one I had back in the early 70's. I love it! There's a ton of fuzzes out there. But this one surprised me again of how rich your tone can be.

EH Big Muff pedals

By Kevin from Stuart FL on November 5, 2019 Music Background: I'm just really starting to learn guitar (I've played keyboards since I was 16, I'm 63 now) I also play some Bass guitars. I love Pink Floyd, Santana, Marshall Tucker Band, Steely Dan

Hey Guys I love the EH Big Muffs, just wanted to say though your man at the end said that they require 9 volt
"AC" power supply. At the end, I saw it's really 9 volt DC. I'm sure glad of that one! AC is a lot different from DC power.
I rate it a huge 5 on the pedals but, a 4 and a half on your guy.

This thing rocks

By Hutdog from Atlantic Highlands NJ on September 20, 2019

Since the 90s, I"ve had many kinds of big muffs but this Triangle Muff might be my favorite. Been selling off my old 90s green Russians.
No need for em big boxes anymore when you now can get em in a smaller better built size. My least favorite is the white nano.
I like the green Russian reissue. This new Triangle reissue
Is just right for me. Loving it.

Big Muff Triangle

By Charles Croce from Ft Lauderdale Fla. on June 23, 2019 Music Background: Intermediate Guitarist

After trying a few Fuzz pedals I decided on the Big Muff Triangle. The tone knob made the difference for me. It actually works. Of course the 1st song I used it on was "Spirit in the sky"
Amazing pedal. Good bang for the bucks.
Once again Sweetwater was a pleasure to deal with.
Fast and accurate delivery.

Brings back memories

By Paul Lauersdorf from Houston,Tx on May 11, 2019 Music Background: Novice

Watched the video about it,so I knew a little.played with it for a while till I found the sound I was after.then played with it some more for a different song.very versatile.gives you that 70"s sound I grew up with listening to the radio.great investment

This is the Fuzz you are looking for.

By Nathan Thorpe from FL on February 12, 2019

This pedal is sick! It crushes the Big Muff Pi. From nasty heavy tone to Gilmore like awesomeness. This pedal has a lot of usable flavors. Just one warning... It can have some feed back which might be my guitar but overall it"s manageable and it makes up for it with killer tone. Speaking of killer tone I can testify this nails that Gilmore sound perfectly! Really happy with this pedal. I actually sold my nano muff to get it and have no regrets. Another great EHX pedal!

Ticks all the boxes.

By Tom from Dayton, OH on January 23, 2019 Music Background: Grizzled Veteran Player, semi-retired.

I don't know where I was when th original came out, but somehow I just missed it. I'm mostly a clean-to-medium gain player but a sweet, singing fuzz always has a place in my toolbox. I've had a fair number of fuzzes over the years and all seemed to have their own flavors, advantages and drawbacks. None of them really covered all the bases I wanted covered. Determined not to miss the boat again and based on the various reviews, I jumped on this one.

This thing is off the hook! Gritchy crunch is right there and that sweet "hold a note for a week" edge of feedback thing was easily obtained. The output level is enormous and will absolutely clobber your amp's front end if you want it to. Special mention must be made of the tone control. It's MILES more useful than your simple treble cut found on most units. It goes from a very beefy bass boost to a piercing top end boost. I find mine usually sitting at about 11 o'clock, but it varies a lot. In short, it's everything I was looking for in a fuzz.

As always, big props to Scott A. for making it easy. I raved at him so hard about this that he was thinking about bringing one home himself.

The original Muff!

What can I say ? ... After buying this and the Green Russian, I cannot wait to plug up to these beautiful fuzz boxes every day and jam away (until my wife and/or kids interrupt

I like this one already

By Sweetwater Customer on December 14, 2018

I don't yet own my own one of these, but It is basically a classic beast of a pedal. Since it is the exact same product with a different part number I highly recommend reading the reviews. I've searched so much for goodfuzz pedals I like. This one is about to go on my pedal board soon as I but in in the next few months. The reason I'm so willing to buy it is because experimenting withoverall sound will literally blow you away or surprise the check out of a person. I think this one has a variety of surprises but once you find your favorites you know it works very well. The classic version would cost you. a fine penny. These are easy to buy and won't break the bank if you've been saving. This particular pedal will probably do great with chorus and pitch shifting pedals. I like to keep it to an electric guitar plugged into one to five pedals and and any amp I own with 8 inch speakers and between 100 and 200 watts. But I'm not other people so use stuff your own way and listen to this thing

Very tweakable, versatile, high gain pedal!

By John E from Texas on November 25, 2018 Music Background: A lifetime labor of Love with Music!

I recommend starting with the Volume and Sustain turned down and the Tone at 12 o'clock. The sweep of the Tone circuitry can coax many different sounds from this pedal. The boost from the Volume control goes from nothing to extreme very quickly. Turn the Volume too high and this pedal will pull your strings right out of tune. Take some time to experiment and you'll find this can be many pedals in one.

I played the Triangle with the Boss PS-6 Harmonist before it in Pitch Shifter mode, set for an octave up (Shift at 3 o'clock) with the Mix control between 10 and 11 o'clock for a bit more of the original note than the octave up note. I got some sweet Hendrix sounds out of it.

Experiment, experiment, experiment, and you'll be rewarded. This pedal can easily be a beast to tame or an angel singing. Find your niche.

Best Fuzz Pedal for me : A BEGINNER

By Wes Jones from North Richland Hllls, TX on November 13, 2018 Music Background: First Horns then R & R Drummer / Current Blues Guitar

After playing rhythm guitar for many" many years (for mostly my own pleasure) I decided to learn to play Blues lead.
The exact distortion sound of the Triangle Big Muff is EXACTLY the sound I needed. Now my practice has returned to that insatiable desire to become a "Good Player". My Sweetwater contact LISTENED to what I wanted and suggested this pedal. WOW! I couldn"t be happier! Thank You SWEETWATER !!!! Wes Jones / Texas

pure vintage

By Michael Shipley from Rosedale, MD on October 31, 2018 Music Background: 47 years experience as lead guitarist

I ordered and received my Triangle Big Muff within days and I was not disappointed. When tone is set at 12 o'clock, fuzz at 9 o'clock and output around 5 o'clock, it screams of the David Gilmore vintage sound. Just add a little reverb and delay.

70's Fuzz

By Jack from Lake View, New York on October 18, 2018 Music Background: Writer, Producer and Programmer

I have a couple of Electro Harmonix that I bought in the early 1970's and this Triangle Reissue is true to the tone and functionality of these pedals.
To make the pedal EHX fuzz pedal work properly "for me", I use the David Gilmour 60's methology, school of thought....
I Have a HIWAT CUSTOM 50 (Reeves reissue OEM Design) AMP Into FANE Replica speakers. This amp is specifically clean/load/with a lot of headroom. so the pedals drive the amp.
I put the Triangle fuzz behind (I.e Post-Boost) my B.K. Butler Tube Driver and in front of (Pre-Boost) my
Tru-Fi Colordriver.
Now don't quit your day job because you'll need it after graduation to proceed down this path.

Warm& fuzzy

By Rich Mead from Florida on October 15, 2018 Music Background: Ex bar band, some studio. Guitar, bass, keys

Two of my favorite guitarists are David Gilmour, and Eric Johnson. The original Big Muff is a big part of their sound, or so I've heard. After a few minutes of playing around with this unit I had a really good replication of Gilmour's sound. I still haven't achieved more than a few fleeting moments of Eric's sound, but there's more to that violin tone than any one pedal can accomplish, and I'm certainly not up to the task of playing like him. That said I could see light at the end of the tunnel I've never seen before. This is a great pedal and worth adding to anyone's arsenal.

Faithfully Excellent

By TW Huey from DSotM on October 9, 2018 Music Background: 31 years playing

This reissue is a real game changer. It helped to revamp my entire approach to my tone. Right out of the box it brings the classic Triangle Big Muff Tone. It is easy to control, and so far as I've experimented, it never gets muddy sounding. I'm currently working on a recording project, and after playing the lead parts with this pedal, I went back erased the original leads and re-recorded them with the Triangle. It is such a faithful re-issue that I can see it becoming legendary in its own right. The smaller casing is a plus and is well made. In the space of one week, it became a mainstay in my chain. I highly recommend it.

A Thing of Monstrous Beauty

By Wes from California on October 1, 2018 Music Background: Longtime player, in and out of bands. Mostly out.

I've been playing guitar for a few decades, and I've gone through a lot of distortion pedals. For some reason, I'd never entered the realm of the Muff, as it were, until this. I was a bit dubious before plugging in, but that went away fastlike: this thing is incredible. It moves from cascading walls of sound to singeing, singing leads, and the latter cut through quite well. It has a wonderful, cello-like compressed sound when needed, seemingly endless sustain, and as much saturated distortion as you like, all while retaining an articulate presence. I think I'd dismissed muffs as somehow lacking in mids and thus the ability to be both huge and distinct, but this has changed my mind altogether. It's my go-to distortion, which is saying something.

Great Retro Fuzz

By Terry Sullivan from Virginia on September 29, 2018 Music Background: Pro

This pedal(for me), nails the classic sounds of the late 60's and 70's.
I've been gigging for 53 years and love that era of rock and roll. For me, this pedal is a time machine!
As always Aaron and the group at Sweetwater go the extra mile to ensure satisfaction.
Shop Sweetwater with confidence, they will not disappoint.

Sustain for Days

By Sweetwater Customer on September 28, 2018

The Triangle Big is a beautiful device that will enhance anyone's tone. It is built sturdy and compact. The controls offer a broad palette of tones for your playing. Compared to the Electro-Harmonix Sovtek Big Muff, the Triangle's the controls make tailoring your tone easier and more precise. Dialed into the right settings, you can get an excellent fuzz sustain that lasts and lasts. It is an impressive re-issue that I can not recommend enough.

Sustain

By David Williams from Kansas City, Mo. on September 23, 2018 Music Background: 50 years of playing professionally

Plenty of sustain on tap with this pedal and more
than I thought there would be. I was blown away
on how easy it was to get a good tone from this
pedal. Well worth the money. If your looking for
that classic Big Muff sound you will find it here.

EH Triangle Big Muff Reissue Fuzz.

It"s a real Big Muff. It"s not as noisy as the original but it"s the real deal that I remember from way back when.

Big muff Pi reissue

By Michael McGee from Pa. on January 2, 2019 Music Background: 60s and 70s

I love the classic Tone If this pedal! It ranges from everything from a SharkBite to a fuzzy violin type sound. I also like the fact that it takes up a lot less real estate on my pedalboard. I gave this a rating of 4.5 and the only half Point deduction that I can find what it's so far is that when the game is turned all the way down it's still pretty fuzzy. I have had fuzz pedals like this that when the gain is turned down it does act more as overdrive boost. But as far as the fuzz goes Its 100% hands down!

Sweet Fuzz

By Jon from Athens, GA on November 13, 2018 Music Background: Playing guitar for 40 years -at least two of those in a band

For the last several years, I gave been on a quest for a certain fuzz tone. I have several fuzz pedals in various flavors
including the Green Russian Big Muff - which I also like very much - but the Triangle Big Muff is getting closer to the sound for which I"ve been hunting. I don"t play with a lot of fuzz, or often, but sometimes it just seems necessary to set a certain mood. It"s true to my ears what others are saying about the smooth almost violin like sustain one can get with this little box, and it does the Gilmore thing easily, but it also has some delightfully mean (= nice) fuzz on tap that doesn"t seem to me (my ears again) to be muddy in anyway. I tried it with various nob configurations through both a very clean amp with a fair amount of headroom and a slightly over-driven amp with less head room and it sounded fantastic in every variation. I haven"t used it along side too many other stomp boxes, so I"m not informed enough to say how well I think it plays with others, but so far it is my favorite fuzz that I own and use.

EHX goodness

By Sweetwater Customer on September 23, 2018 Music Background: Guitar, bass, baritone, ethnic stringed instruments

Nice pedal. Solid build. It"s my only guitar pedal so I have nothing to compare it too. I like the different sounds. I do have a Big Muff Pi for bass and this one seems cleaner. EHX always does it right man. If you"re a fuzz connoisseur I guess this reiteration holds a special place in fuzz history. A shout out to Geoff Allen, my sales rep, who hooked me up.

Triangle Fuzz

By Michael De Michele MD from Mechanicsburg PA on September 14, 2018 Music Background: Serious hobby,

I have around 20 fuzz pedals and this one is worthy of the pedal board. Not harsh. Much smoother and more "singing" tone. I like it. It does do the Comfortably Numb tone but also can do the Iomi Sabbath tone, I don't think they re-invented the wheel here. How could EHX, they only have like 10 fuzz pedals they released in the last 20 years but for... great Sweetwater service you get the real deal,

Sounds great! By itself!

By Mike Drake from Cincinnati, OH on September 13, 2023

Had a'70s Big muff , the big muff nano, and now the big muff triangle. Great sound, awesome sustain, but it doesn't play well with my other pedals. Not with Keeley compressor +, SD-1, or Keeley phat mod. But alone it is quite. Maybe that's the trick: use it all by itself.

Killer tones

By Josh from Utah on May 24, 2019

It's a great reissue of the original. It has to literally be compared to the original built, wired, and component triangle pedal because there is another out there that does sound different.

Full Skinny On The Big Muff

By ElectricBlue from Nebraska on December 16, 2018 Music Background: Semi Pro - Lead Guitar / Vocals

I started my "Muffdom" in the early 70's by getting a "Muff Fuzz" for Christmas. What magic for a young kid with a Fender set up. Since then I've been running mainly Boss, but had the Big Muff, Big Muff Pi, a Reissue Muff, and now the Triangle Big Muff Pi close at hand. This Triangle Muff is a welcome toy and has found it's place in my pedal chain. The first thing I found is when kicked on, it doesn't drop the volume and ooze "muddiness" like the other reissues. The pedal fits easily on the board and uses a standard power source without any adapters needed. The controls are very friendly with this model, and actually offers more than the "British mud" sound of the original. Although much more forgiving, I still don't like the "Tone" control designed to roll off one side while adding the other. But (for me) if you envision the control like a "teeter-totter" it is easier to find that sweet spot. This pedal is a great reissue of the original, and those who enjoy a Big Muff once in awhile will certainly be pleased with this.

Big Muff triangle

By Jim A. from Phila on November 12, 2018 Music Background: retired musician

Great effect - works beautifully with my Strat. With the tone control turned nearly all the way down, I get a great smooth distortion- not so much with my Carvin. I think the Carvin's neck through the body design lets the lower strings vibrate too much, so I get a sort of rumble with the Muff on, but again works well with the Strat.
